All Time Low – Nothing Personal
Release Date: July 7, 2009
Record Label: Hopeless
Ah, the summer of 2002. I remember 16 year-old me, cruising around the south side of Indianapolis with my still hot-off-the-machine drivers license listening to pop-punk staples such as New Found Glory, The Starting Line, and blink-182. My acne had just cleared up and my braces were due to be off any day now, and the feel-good tunes of “My Friends Over You” and “The Best of Me” paced the soundtrack to my summer. So it only makes sense that I’m reaching for the Clearasil while listening to Nothing Personal, the third, and soon to be breakthrough, album from All Time Low.
You see, when I listen to this album, it brings me back to that carefree summer. Maybe it’s the massive hooks of Nothing Personal, or the nature of the lyrics. With a “who’s who” list of producers behind the album (Matt Squire, Butch Walker, David Bendeth, S*A*M & Sluggo, and The-Dream), the twelve tracks all sound crisp, smooth, and dynamic. Opener “Weightless” packs a Tyson-sized punch, as the chorus soars behind Alex Gaskarth’s voice. Other pop-punk wish they could write hooks like the one on “Weightless,” and, as good as this hook is, it’s not the best one on this album. That would belong to the Butch Walker-produced first single “Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don’t).” The song has Walker’s fingerprints all over it, as it is nearly impossible to get “oh-oh-oh/how was I supposed to know?” out of your head.
The aggressiveness is turned up a notch on “Break Your Little Heart” and “Lost In Stereo.” “Break Your Little Heart” is paced by Gaskarth and Jack Barakat’s guitar work, while “Lost in Stereo” channels a bit of Jimmy Eat World angst into the chorus. “Stella” has some giddy-up to it, as the song carries just a bit of campy-ness to it.
“Keep The Change, You Filthy Animal” is the best song New Found Glory never wrote [1] (http://www.absolutepunk.net/showthread.php?p=46943612#post46943 612), while “A Party Song (The Walk of Shame)” will be a fan favorite next time All Time Low goes on tour. “Therapy” closes Nothing Personal on a somber note. While it’s no “Remembering Sunday,” it could still be a hit in the mainstream, a la Plain White T’s.
While the flaws of the album and the handful of clunkers wouldn’t bother 16-year-old Drew, the 23-year-old version has a few issues. First off, “Hello, Brooklyn” is an awful song, as it is the only track I skip on the album. The track sounds like a b-side from The Academy Is… terrible Fast Times At Barrington High. Another miss is “Too Much,” which is everything the title implies. Produced by The-Dream, the track has good intentions, but executes poorly. Lyrically, Nothing Personal focuses on girls, relationships, alcohol, and good times with friends. Basically it is the three months of summer portrayed through the eyes of All Time Low.
When I blast Nothing Personal in my car and roll down the windows, I can’t help but think of the summer of 2002. It has what anyone wants in their pop-punk/rock – huge hooks, honest (if not cheesy) lyrics, and a fun attitude. All Time Low isn’t exactly reinventing the wheel here, so if you were a fan of their 2007 album, So Wrong, It’s Right, then you will have no troubles enjoying this, as Nothing Personal is a step-up. The rest of 2009 is shaping up to be All Time Low’s year, as they should follow in the footsteps of Fall Out Boy and Paramore and just explode. If you dislike them now, you’ll really hate them as the year moves on. As for me, I’m gonna put on an Atticus shirt and some Dickies and relive 2002.

Awesome review, man. Though I did like Too Much. Maybe there's a bit of sixteen-year old Drew in me. Or some 8th grade Drew, since I didn't mind Eminem's Insane.
/review throwback.
I agree.
It's a good album, but not a masterpiece like everyone is expecting it to be.
It's just a fun summer record.

No surprises here.
Disappointed to hear that there won't be a decent follow-up to "Remembering Sunday" though.

Good review; I got the same vibes just from one listen, especially about "Hello Brooklyn" and "Therapy." And as predictable (even a little cheesy) as "Stella" is, it is one of those songs you want to play again as soon as it's over.

i feel like hello brooklyn has a ton of meaning to it rather then just easy made lyrics.
hes been to alot of major cities and partied in alot of them. i think this song just goes to all the times he's had all over the world. in my opinion the ending is epic when he shouts out all the city names.
Other than Put Up or Shut Up I never cared much for ATL. I wasn't excited about Nothing Personal, but I still decided to give it a try.
I'll be completely honest. This album took me by complete surprise by how much I enjoyed it. Is it anything new and groundbreaking? Well of course not. But overall it's a great summer pop punk record. It has its flaws, but I can see myself jamming out to the majority of the songs any day. Lost in Stereo is my personal favorite.

I don't know how you can give this 76 but say that Fast Times At Barrington High is a bad record, it's superior in my opinion. Not that I don't like Nothing Personal, i do, but there are more throw away songs on here than FTABH just my opinion but I think other people would agree that they are both fun listens.

i honestly don't even look at the user's review anymore. it will always be fucked up by some 13 year old who thinks he's being clever by marking everything all 10 or all .25.
i wish drew would have said something about walls, i think that's a standout track.
I listened through this album, and while there's nothing particularly wrong with it, I didn't really want to play it again. I've decided to stick with the pop punk I listened to as a 15 year old.

I agree I love this album but Fast Times is better in my opinion too. It had a few songs on it that I didn't like but it was a solid album. But TAI is one of my favorite bands so I'm a little slanted lol

But I'll live. No other complaints here, band will explode. Really nice fucking guys too.

I didn't listen to the leak on Rhapsody because I wanted to just enjoy the album when it comes out, brick-and-mortar style. I have heard 'Weightless" and I do think it's hooky as all hell. The only issue that I have is when people throw the rules out when it comes to summer records. Drew's review didn't do this, but some of the posts in the thread rationalize the seasonal release date.

“Stella” has some giddy-up to it
That is absolutely the perfect way to describe it. I was having trouble explaining what I meant, only being able to say that it was an "unconventional all time low sound."

This album sucks.
This is absolutely the same album as the last one. No progression
Jay-Z should really pimp smack these little girls because this shit has AUTO-TUNE written all over it.
All Time Low is literally a boy band that has instruments in front of them.
The-Dream helped out on this record? well, fuck.

For me, bands like NFG, blink, and TSL released songs that packed a punk punch but still had lyrics about breakups and the lovey dovey shit that I could easily relate to. When I listened to Nothing Personal, there was nothing of substance. I heard alot of generic guitar bits, autotuned vocals, and poppy beats. Not one of the songs even grabbed me lyrically. At least Boys Like Girls can grab me with a good set of lyrics (case and point, "Heels Over Head"). I honestly will never understand why people who are not 12-17 year old girls like this brand of pop(ular)-punk music. ATL have nothing to offer but bad haircuts, neon shirts, and sugary songs.

Comparing this to '02 era pop-punk is relatively insulting to '02 era pop-punk. The Party Scene would have been worth the comparison, but not this.
The Party Scene is one of my favorite pop-punk albums, but this is just kind of a joke. It's too refined, there's too much auto-tune. Alex's voice doesn't even sound the same anymore. Compared to a lot of the poppy punk stuff that is coming out as of late, this is better, but in comparison to their previous albums...this is a step down.
IMO, pop-punk should have some grit to it. The vocals shouldn't be perfectly clean. It needs a bit of an edge and this has none of that. Up to this point it seemed as though ATL kept that edge and stood out among a lot of similar bands, but this makes me feel like they are just falling right in line. None of the songs grabbed me. It's a completely forgettable album.

i definitely didn't think that this album was going to be good at all, but i was proven wrong and gladfully so. it's good to have feel good music and not be so worried about the technicalities of how the songs are put forth. i'm going to be 22 in just a couple of months, but it feels good that i can be 16 again because the songs reminds me of those summers from then and up until now. a + and two thumbs up from me.

I think Alex has said that was because he used to sing incorrectly
I do agree that good pop punk shouldn't be so slick though. I thought this was a fun album, catchy as hell, filled with great hooks, but very... shiny.

And I'm pretty sure that Tom Delonge doesn't sing correctly either, but he has a very distinct sound to his vocals. Regardless if Alex was singing correctly or not, it sounded good and unless it was causing him some any sort of discomfort, pain, whatever I wish he would have stuck to it.
There's nothing about this band that makes it stick out from the rest of the new kids anymore. They sort of got thrown into this new scene of "pop-punk" (which is honestly a joke to call it that) due to their general appearance, but to me their sound made them stand out a bit. They still had that grit, they were refined or "shiny" as you put it (good describer, btw). But now they don't sound any different then anyone else. Everything these days sounds the same and looks the same.

Fair point. I definetly liked the roughness of Alex's voice. I'm just giving them the benefit of the doubt by saying that Alex is now signing the way he's supposed to instead of using autotune as a crutch.
There are so few new pop punk bands that are any good these days. When you go to seven different myspace pages and every band sounds EXACTLY the same, it's a little disheartening.

Frankly, I feel like there's more auto tune in this album compared to previous albums.
Pop-punk is a dying breed, well, maybe not necessarily. I feel like there's a resurgence of true pop punk with bands like NFG, SYG, Fireworks, FYS, etc. I feel like NFG especially is getting back to their true pop-punk roots compared to cleaner albums like Coming Home. But the shit that's out there for the masses, that is eyeing the 12-18 year old is exactly that...shit. They all sound the same and look the same. I remember when pop-punk was less about the clothes you wore and more about the actual music.

Seeing bands like New Found Glory back in 2003 was a treat, now I find myself having to drive 800 miles to see bands like Set Your Goals and Four Year Strong... (Wishing they would come to Winnipeg sometime...)

Kids, let it be known that your skin breaking out doesn't stop when you enter your 20's. Believe me, I unfortunately am reminded every so often.
Also, this record is a vast improvement on the old one but I have the feeling that the AP staff gives it more kudos than deserved simply due to the fact that it reminds them of "old days".

Sounds like someone has grown up and realized that this type of music no longer applies to them.

It's got some big hooks and some watered-down flavor that leaves my mouth dry. I dunno, it's an improvement over the last record, but still very much flash in the pan to me. I wish they could just live up to their potential for an entire record -- loses steam after more and more listens, ya know?
Mid-70's is a good score though, although I'd rate it a tad lower. Either way, I agree for the most part and have to say "Hello Brooklyn" is just a headscratcher of a song. Very weak.

I agree to a point. However, I think there's something to be said about a more natural sounding voice. For example, on the latest Jack's Mannequin, I think they had a more lax auto-tune usage which allowed for a more organic vocal sound. Sure, the pitch might go all over the place in certain instances, but it still sound great.

Agreed. Image has always been a part of music (not saying it's a good thing, just true), but I feel like it has reached a ridiculous level of neon and narcissism.

Reasons why I think 76% is way too generous
1)Are there hooks on the album ...... yeah some but every band in this genre has hooks and there is none on this record that are gonna change anyones life
2) The sound of the record seems really outdated and unoriginal, like bands in this genre have been doing this for years and theres nothing on the record that sets them apart from the crowd, it just conforms to it even more
3) Musically for a band with 2 guitarist the riffing is pretty underwhelming and has taken a step back from there older stuff and lyrically ive seen no progression since there first ep
50% .... mediocre album with some hits but lots of misses

Just to clarify, I'm definitely not talking about Kanye West or similar artists, at all. Anyone who uses auto-tune in that way has turned it into a type of instrument and an obvious vocal effect. Not that I agree with it or anything, but that type of usage is completely aside from the use of auto-tune as a deceitful tool. However, it is common knowledge that every artist uses auto-tune, and I hardly consider it something they're trying to "hide." Trust me, I would love to be proven wrong, but I'm not shocked by it at all, and I don't even think it's worth bringing up anymore.
It is just not an option anymore in this industry to disown something like auto-tune, unless everyone makes the move together, and they won't. Perfection is "in" in every facet of... the world, and if people are surprised by this, heads should probably be removed from asses ASAP.

I'm surprised there aren't more comments about the albums production. I think it is pretty damn awful. Good review but I disagree with a few things. "Hello Brooklyn is one of my favorite songs on the album but that's maybe because I really really liked "Fast Times" since you would put it on that CD. And maybe the score should be a bit higher cause this seems to be an average album looking at the score and it's not. It's far by perfect but it's better as most pop-punk these days.
On the other hand, I completely agree with "too much", I don't understand that song, completely useless.

I disagree. Would you really want every band to have a pop-punk style and sound the same? I'd rather not. Alex's voice soesn't sound the same because he has matured and stronger voice without the nasally/raspy sound to it. Bands typically don't sound the same on every album (sorry to disappoint you). I think that they have an "edge" to them and just because they don't sound like bands who are known for making pop-punk album doesn't mean they aren't pop-punk. The songs are full of hooks and none of the songs sound the same. I think they improved alot vocally, lyrically, and musically.

This album starts off amazing. Weightless and Break Your Little Heart are as good as pop punk songs can get.

I'm incredibly impressed with this album. I've never much cared for ATL, but some of this is genuinely excellent.

One of us is operating with an incorrect definition of mediocre. I'm okay with it.
i honestly thought this review was just slate the whole album
it was a fair and credible review i have to say though. well done!
though i do like Too Much and Hello Brooklyn isn't such a bad song, still catchy and fun to listen to.
i just happen to like all the tracks on the album! definitely in my top 10 albums of all time.
i can't stop listening to it as my last.fm gets dominated recently by this awesome album
i seriously hope they don't become the new fall out boy like after their 3rd album, FUCT.

It's a 76%. How does that constitute as "mediocre"? Mid 70's is what most albums get around here.

Great review. Though I find Therapy better than Remembering Sunday. The lyrics have a little more depth and the melody is much more powerful. Otherwise, this is pretty much spot-on.

i don't know.. i don't think "Hello Brooklyn" was that bad. people say towards the end it just sounds like he ran out of lyrics with all the city names.... but i thought it was a cool kind of shout out to those cities. (and i LOVE that he said DC AND Baltimore)

me⋅di⋅o⋅cre [mee-dee-oh-ker] –adjective
1) of only ordinary or moderate quality; neither good nor bad; barely adequate.
2) rather poor or inferior.
If you operate within the bounds of typical grading schemes, a 76% is a C/C+, which almost any teacher or professor will tell you is average. A "B", of course, being above average and "A" being superb.
Moderate quality roughly translates to "average quality". I kinda went with that. By the way, I don't particularly care, just making a stupid point.

This album is growing on me. It's really nothing groundbreaking, but super catchy throughout -- and really, that's what I expect and want from the genre.

you can't view rating scales like school grade scales.
in rating scales, a 50% is mediocre or average. a rating of 76% is good.

Yeah, someone beat me to it. You're viewing this like a term paper in school, which it's not. This is based off of 100%, not 60%. 75% around here is what you would equate to a B+/A-, I would say.

How the hell did you not mention Walls Drew? It's by far the best song on the album. All the songs are much too similar, and Walls changes it up a lot. It's a powerhouse of a song.

Agreed. Stands out from the rest, and is still a great song. The intro is just too good.

Just finished listening to this and I dunno... it's good, really good in some parts, but for me it's just lacking something that So Wrong, It's Right has. I really don't like Too Much and Therapy.
Stand-out songs for me (apart from Weightless) are Break Your Little Heart, Damned If I Do Ya (Damned If I Don't), Stella, Walls (which kind of reminds me of something from The Academy Is' Fast Times at Burrington High album for some reason), Keep the Change, You Filthy Animal and A Party Song (The Walk of Shame).
So I do like a lot of the album really :-d I just prefer SWIR. A good, fair review though.

I seriously went into this thinking "eh, it's okay". And I've been listening to it CONSTANTLY since, so I think my opinion has changed. Haha.
I don't get the hate for "Hello Brooklyn" hate either! My brother said it's his favorite track, and while not mine, I like it a lot. Silly lyrics and all.

I like it, but there are only three or four songs that stick with me. "Lost in Stereo" sounds more unique from the get-go, and the vocal lines and backing guitar just mesh perfectly. The two singles work really well as singles, and "Therapy" is a little more memorable because it's different. Everything else (except "Hello Brooklyn" and "Too Much") is good to listen to, but I'm wondering if I'll be able to remember the songs if I don't listen to them for two days.

I'd be interested to see what you guys think of my review (http://www.sputnikmusic.com/album.php?reviewid=31204). I put it up on Sputnikmusic because I have mine put up straight away.
My feelings after a few listens are.... average. I think there are 3 excellent "good old pop-punk" songs here("Weightless", "Party Song" and "Keep The Change..") and the rest, well, mediocre, repetitive and way to over produced. I agree about this lacking a punk punch like proper pop-punk should.
Don't get me wrong I like these guys, but for me The Party Scene, Three Words To Remember In Dealing With The End and Put Up or Shut Up are far, far better than this.
