someone come defend this horrible excuse for a team. what made them better? overpaying for an oft injured #2 or the fact that they have 2 outfielders and then a rotating blend of reed johnson, john-ford griffin and alex rios at the other OF position?

or maybe that they have 5 corner infielders for 3 possible spots (1b, 3b and DH)

great planning there.

b.j ryan will end up being a bust too.

toronto looks like nothing more than a .500 team to me, although halladay will probably put up cy young numbers.

people just got excited because a team who never does anything actually spent money for once. it's like how people flipped over the tigers when they signed a couple guys last year. that turned out real well :shake:

Toronto has got the champs this year. Thats my prediction and I'm sticking to it.

bj ryan will be a good closer in the games they actually can win... but those will be minimal. roy halladay will probably be pitching all of those, because he is god.

Last year Toronto's Pythagorean record ( RS^2/(RS^2+RA^2)) was 89-73. Now of course certain things did not go their way, ie halladay going down, but if they were a team capable of this last year, you would have to think they can do better.

I'll say 87 wins because the two teams above them are stronger than last year.

mikeford

yo. they do not have a second baseman. aaron hill played a whopping 22 games at 2B last season.

yeah.

If you want to talk about a team who sucks. How about the Pittsburgh Pirates? We haven't had a .500 team in 12 seasons.

no, but I do have his "Historical Baseball Abstract" and "Bill James Handbook" in my book shelf.

yo. they have more punch at third base and a pretty good 2nd man in the rotation. Notice I didnt go as high as their Pythag record last year. I said 87.

you cant play 4 (discounting aaron hill as their 2b for sake of argument) 3rd basemen at once though. they have to not play at least one of the shea, overbay, hinske, and troy glaus EVERY DAY.

You play Glaus and Overbay almost every day, that’s given, and you spilt DH/1B/3B time between Hillenbrand and Hinske. Or, trade one now or during midseason to help out in other areas. Having these guys does not make them any worse, it actually could help them if they use them right. Also, Hill doesn't have to be a good hitter, Hudson wasn’t that great. As long as Hill plays good up the middle defense and gets on base, there should be no problem.

its been said that theyre going to give hinske every opportunity during the preseason to try and learn how to play in the outfield... meaning he likely won't be taking a spot away from overbay, glaus, or hillenbrand.

the most overhyped team in the majors this year. they could finish with a worse record than the brewers.

but, beckett=burnett. so how can you ridicule the jays for getting burnett, when boston got beckett, who is always hurt and has similar, under productive numbers?

beckett had blisters.

other dude had shoulder problems

big fucking difference guy.

blisters aren't as bad as shoulder injuries, that's a given. but he's still missing games, and being slightly above .500 as a pitcher, like burnett. they just didn't over pay for him.

a worse record than the brewers? so they'll finish just under .500? you say that as if you're referring to the brewers of years ago.

no, i say that as if i'm referring to the fact that the blue jays are supposed to contend for the division, which they won't. so finishing around or below .500, or less than this year brewers, will be a huge disappointment for the delusional blue jay fans.

i don't think the argument was who deserves to be in the hall of fame, i believe it was who is better and more reliable, beckett was florida's no. 1 starter last year, burnett was no. 3. eat a dick.

the blue jays are not gonna be good at all this year. anyone who's saying they'll win the east is a fucking idiot. while talking about injury-prone pitchers, let's not forget halladay has averaged 20 starts his last two years. just sayin...

ya you’re right, they're equal....because at age 25 (which Beckett was last season) Burnett had started less games, pitched less innings, had more walks, less strikeouts, lower ERA+, and so on.

They may be the same pitcher now, but Beckett is 3 years younger and a ton cheaper.

Heck, i'll even throw out Beckett's first year because it was only 24 IP, and he still leads Burnett at age 25, except for maybe ERA+.

And while Toronto gave up their first round for Burnett, the Red Sox gave up prospects who probably wont be as good as Beckett at the age 25.

beckett has more games started, innings pitched, and strikeouts because he's played more full seasons by 25 than burnett. burnett made 27 starts 2001 when he was 24 years old which was 7 more than in his first 2 years combined. so of course beckett will have more innings, games, games started, and strikeouts than when AJ was 25 because he's played more ball at an earlier age in the majors.

they have comparable numbers since 2002 (when beckett was a big leaguer full time). you're comparing beckett's nearly 4 full MLB seasons before he was 25 to Burnetts 2½ full seasons by the time he was 25. the numbers won't equate, obviously.

if you throw out becketts first year, where he only made 4 starts, and burnetts 2003 season when he only made 4 starts: burnett has appeared in more games (110-102), started more games (107-99), has more strikeouts (642-583), and have about the same era+ (113-114). burnett was overpaid so, financially, the red sox have the better pitcher, yes.

If you throw out Beckett’s first year, they both pitched 4 years in which Beckett was better. And the fact that Beckett came up at a younger age, just makes him that much better. Burnett took longer to develop, and thus will lose those years.

Beckett has been pitching on this high a level for longer than Burnett, as you pointed out. While they're comparable in numbers, Beckett is 3 years younger. Imagine where he will be at 28 if he continues on his pace right now.

Burnett was 26 in 2003, Beckett has yet to pitch while 26. You're comparing seasons when im comparing age. Beckett was a better pitcher at 25 than Burnett at 25, and the same will hold true for age 26 and so on.

I see your point, but Beckett is 3 years younger and has the same numbers as Burnett at age 28. There is no question of who is the better pitcher.
