Did search function, only found a thread for the original movie.

Parenthood is a new show coming to NBC that looks promising. It's from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer:

I thought it was a little slow. I'll keep watching to see where it goes but when the show was first introduced it was explained as being more of a comedy than what we saw last night. I know its still a drama, but I expected more humor.

Not that humor is necessary, but I just thought the pilot was a little boring. I will continue to monitor the situation.

decent ratings, especially for NBC.

NBC was third in prime time with 8.2 million viewers. “The Biggest Loser” averaged 8.2 million viewers over two hours. “Parenthood” debuted to 8.1 million viewers. NBC noted that “Parenthood” had more viewers in the 18-to-49 age group than “The Good Wife.”

Personally I was hoping for something a tad funnier...too dry in my opinion.

Do you know what kind of ratings the show that used to be in that slot would get?

Well it came on at 10, so it was the Jay Leno Show, which never got more than like 3 million viewers nightly.

However, Parenthood is much much more expensive to produce. So higher ratings for Parenthood than Jay does not mean success. You've got to compare it to the shows on other channels at the same time. To which, Parenthood was in third.

Other than having the "large, dysfuctional family" show quality to it, they really aren't that similar.

Modern Family is a straight comedy, while Parenthood (despite the commercials) was a drama with some comedic moments.

Exactly what I said. The scene was on purpose though. This is what's called an "homage". I read an article about the show that talked about the homage in Variety (I think it was, anyway) before the show aired

Watched and caught up with this show over the past couple days, have a couple things to note.

-I predict this show getting axed mid Season2, I don't think it's good enough to hold an audience for much longer than that.
-Show reminds me of Dirty Sexy Money, but less dramatic, and not as rich of people. Having Peter Krause be the main character who somewhat holds the family together in his own way does not help this mindset.
-Along with reminding me of DSM, the storyline with Crosby/Jabar is almost identical to the one with Brian and Brian Jr.
-Gilmore girl and Ann-hog having a thing for the same teacher is also very very similar to Michael and George Michael and their thing with Heather Graham.
-I feel the show is poorly written, the situations and storylines are not bad, but the dialogue seems too unreal to really convey the emotions the show seems to aim for
-I'll probably keep watching strictly for the cast, but again... I don't see this show lasting much into season 2, with a fate similar to Dirty Sexy Money, Pushing Daisies, and Eli Stone

I have been watching this show on the NBC on the on demand thing. I think it's pretty good. The Jabbar/Crosby storyline is my favorite. That kid is so effin' adorable. I also really like the lawyer and her family. Can't remember her name right now...

To be fair on the first point -- that's taken from the film the show is based on. Tom Hulce's character is the "screw up" of the family and finds out he has a 5-year-old child, who is black, and tries to integrate him into the family so he can be taken seriously. Crosby is a bit more put-together than Hulce's character, but still, same idea.

It's also a little unfair to say that second plotline has been lifted from AD. I'm pretty certain the Simpsons and even Full House have done similar plotlines. It's just one of those common storylines threaded from the everyday bucket of ideas in writing.

I know they are both common storylines, the point is that the same actors from each of the shows is what triggers my connections on both. When I see Mae Whitman I think AD and that storyline being hers reminds me of that.

i hadn't actually seen the movie, so the fact that it is from that as well justifies it better. maybe i'm just getting to the point where i've seen too many family based drama/comedys and all the storylines are repeated over and over

Those are, by far, the most difficult plot outlines to effectively convey. They all blend together when approached from a dramatic account, but stand apart when it's broad comedy (i.e. AD). This work strictly works through the actors presenting the material. Funny how the people responsible for this show have done amazing things with AD and Friday Night Lights, but this is all pretty familiar... yet I still like it based on who I see on the screen. Really, none of the characters are all that fascinating -- I just like Lauren Graham and Peter Krause a lot haha

it's funny that the main reason I will probably stick with the show is cast, and every time I see them all I can think is:

Nate Fisher
Matt Dowd
Swimfan
Ann-hog
Gilmore girl
Dax Sheppard

and Minka Kelly is way hot

Not saying I condone what Amber did to her cousin, but her character has obviously been through a lot in 15 or 16 years (not sure how old she is exactly). Steve seemed like the first genuinely sweet guy to come into her life, and it was just a shitty situation.

I appreciate that this show is taking on two big plots in its first season. These are heavy issues that will affect the characters for more than an episode or two, so I really hope they act accordingly and don't solve it with ice cream & sleepovers. This is not an issue that will ever be resolved between Haddie and Amber, nor is the issue between Zeke and Camille something that will heal immediately. The show is tackling large issues its first season, and I think that's *ahem* brave of them to do so. Part of the reason I keep coming back.

I personally think that Amber was an idiot for doing what she did. Even tho Steve and Haddie broke up... She could have had the decency to tell Haddie, but on the flip side everything seemed to happen so fast. It really is a good show, one of my favorites actually. I liked the whole Autism awareness thing they had going on. It enables people to become more conscious about Autism which of course is a great thing. Great show overall. Hope its renewed for many seasons to come.

I did too. She actually seems like the more mature one in this situation. Hattie comes across as rather spoiled, and a typical teenager who thinks this is her first and last love. Amber, as said above, has been through so much more, and this is probably the first nice guy she's been with. I guess it's shitty, but I'm hoping that Amber and Steve will work out.

I hate how Amber gets so much shit from them. Yeah, she makes mistakes and reacts poorly sometimes, but she's not that bad. I used to like Christina, but she was a major bitch about the Steve thing. I get where she's coming from though since her daughter's heart was broken, but that was annoying. It's not really about Steve though. It's more about family. I'm pulling for Amber/Steve. We really see him differently with Amber.

They sure get to Fresno quickly. I like it when Sarah and Adam gang up on other people. I'm tired of Sarah wanting to run away.

Good for Crosby. They need to pump up Julia's story without breaking up her marriage. And they need more Drew.

I was really happy with this series. It was incredibly heavy handed at points but it's a show, it has to be. Seeing Peter Krause in another family-oriented drama has really made me miss Six Feet Under. The line in the first episode (could be second) when he finds out his son has a learning disability and Zeke doesn't believe it... The interaction where he says "there's something wrong with my son..." really got to me. My nephew is autistic and man, that was pretty powerful.

I loved how Adam and Sarah yelled at Steve... it felt good for someone to finally blame him. I hate it when one person gets blamed for something that took two people to do. It was more his fault anyway since he really played with her emotions. It was nice to hear him say that he was in love with her though. I can't wait for this show to go come back. I hope that Steve douche doesn't come back. He was not only a bad actor, but never said anything that wasn't a total cliche. Writers seemed too lazy to give that character his own genuine identity. Only real problem I've had so far with this show was trying to understand what was so great about him to divide the family for those couple episodes.

And I wonder why they didn't put Crosby & his "family" on the DVD cover.

Decided to give this a shot based on the fact that Katims is the EP. Yup, I'm hooked. Have burned through eight episodes today.

nice to hear. the 2nd season is amazing.

So, as much as I love Bob Dylan, the international theme (which I heard while watching the first two seasons) "When We Were Young" by Lucy Schwartz fits a lot better with those opening credits than "Forever Young."

Um, seriously thought I was subscribed to this thread....

Absolutely love this show, one of the best and most underrated on TV.

New season is off to an okay start, probably the weakest first 2 episodes of the last 2 seasons. I'm glad the teacher is back though.

I've been thinking of watching this show for a while because I love Peter Krause, but I haven't heard many people talking about it so I just assumed it wasn't that good. Now people are going crazy over this Joni cover (which I thought wasn't very good, just listening to it by itself) and I would really like to experience it in the context of the show to see if it makes it any better. Will be starting Season 1 soon.

watching last week's right now. I so love that it takes place in the bay. when the secretary girl talked about going to shows at Bottom of the Hill, I had a legit outburst and jumped out of my seat in joy.

also, fuck doctor Joe. Mr. "I Only Watch the Movies of Harry Potter". Crosby's doing it right with the books. he can be my dad.
plus who skips ahead in Harry Potter anyway? and who even endorses the 6th movie as being awesome? people who suck.

this is the type of show that I naively hope never ever gets canceled. I just get so invested and captivated by every single second of the damn show. apparently next week is the season finale. does anybody else always regret watching the preview for next week's show? they give so much shit away. I guess maybe deep down I know that the show is tackling well-tread cliche themes that are somewhat spoiler-proof. but it's so well done beyond perfection. it's like a hip 7th heaven. anyway, this post was all over the place. just sorta joined these forums and realized there's a thread for everything I'm currently geeking out about.

I remember discovering 7th Heaven when I was a kid and getting super hooked. I'm sure it doesn't hold up. I feel like they are both in the genre of feel-good family serial dramas, but I must declare that Parenthood is in a whole different league on a different planet in a galaxy far far away.

tonight's episode was phenomenal, by the way.

They have been on such a roll this season. I never know what to expect from NBC, so I'm a worried about ratings.

Clearly he will.

irthesteve
02/24/12, 09:42 AM
no need to spoil that, haha. But yes, Crosby's gonna be real pissed. But the new offer is sure to actually make him think about it, no matter how set in his ways he is

02/24/12, 12:31 PM
I suppose the show is rather predictable, so obviously Crosby will be pissed. I wonder what the finale cliffhanger will be

GardenTrousers
02/24/12, 03:01 PM
I wonder how much money was actually offered? I feel like if a million dollars didn't make Crosby blink, doubling or tripling that won't make him budge at all. although, I've got a good feeling though that he'll look at the situation differently now that he's got his family back together. I think that Crosby was partially using his passion towards the studio to help him cope with that fractured relationship. I'm telling you guys, rain does the trick. the Notebook, the Office. it's magical.

I really would be bummed to see that studio go away though. Haddie should just go to a freaking state school, am I rite?

irthesteve
02/24/12, 03:06 PM
I figrued it was 2 million, which would mean 1 million to Crosby, that'd make him think...

HelpMeSleep
02/25/12, 02:25 PM
I don't think doubling the offer would really change anything for Crosby, but getting his family back together might. And I agree about the rain. That scene was so adorable.

But I don't think Haddie should have to go to a state school. She earned her acceptance and she deserves it, and she's always the one who gets pushed aside to deal with Max's Asbergers.

definitely good finale. glad Adam changes his mind.

It was never about the money for Crosby. That was his passion and his dreams and you can't put a price on that. Adam wanted the money for his family, but did he ever wonder where that would put Crosby jobwise? Did he just expect Crosby to open a studio on his own again?
