View Full Version : Animal Violence in Movies

I was watching Amores Perros last night and had to turn it off only 20 minutes or so in. My sister was deeply disturbed by the dog fighting and dead dogs, I think she was on the verge of tears.
Isn't it interesting to think about how offended we usually get when animals are portrayed in violent situations? BUT, we can watch a movie like say Braveheart repeatedly and it doesn't phase us. I remember watching Fear when I was younger and the worst part of the movie was the decapitated dog. Anyways, any other instances in movies that you guys can think of or stories to share? Discuss.

I don't mind animal violence, it's no different to me than a person getting stabbed, shot, etc.

I see Kevin already posted it but mine's better
it's easier to watch people get hurt/killed because they're people who have at some point been a douche bag or something, but animals are always innocent. even if they're vicious and killer, they were either taught that by a human, or are sick with rabies or something.
it's like watching a movie and a woman and her baby get killed, you feel bad about the innocent baby and not so much about the mother.
makes me wonder why people don't care about abortion and how it's murder... sorry about this tangent...

I think we can agree this is a pretty ignorant statement.

Movie that show or imply voilence towards domesticated animals has always bothered me, I can set through anything, but I try to avoid them. Suicide Club with its puppy stomp is an example of one that bothered me a bit. I recently watched Red, which is a movie about a man who takes revenge on a kid who kills his dog in cold blood. The scene was shown from a distance, but the close up of the man hugging his dying dog in bloody aganoy got to me a bit.

the only thing that comes to mind is the scene in I am Legend...then again, I have a soft spot for german shepards
I don't like to see nice animals die in movies, but don't really feel bad if a rabid junk yard dog gets popped.
Also, I usually don't feel bad for people when they get shot, but somethin always bugs when innocent bystanders get shot a la Pulp Fiction when Ving Rhames goes to shoot Bruce Willis but hits some innocent lady instead. I know there's more examples, but that's all that comes to mind.

The man punted Baxter!!!!
I looked at that picture and immediately thought "thats how I roll" as well. God I love Anchorman.
I find animal violence in movies to be far harder to take as well. I'm not sure why, but it kills me to see an animal get harmed. It harms my soul. Yet I can watch people get killed right and left and it doesn't bother me.

That always bothered me too, but I thought it was cool that QT included that. It always bothered me that that kind of thing never happened in movies.

It really adds realism and shows that there are more people in the movie than just the main characters. It's just the fact you know that sometimes the real world is a scarier than the movies.

It doesn't bother me that much. It just adds emotion to the movie. It's fake, so you don't really have to worry about it.
I Am Legend does come to mind though. That movie brings me to tears every time I watch it.

Totally agree. It's so jarring when Rhames gets out of that car all dazed and guns down that woman. Besides the fact that his characters speak like they've seen every film and heard every piece of music in the past five decades, QT's movies are fairly realistic.

You guys with the spoilers should at least leave the movie unspoilered. How is someone supposed to determine whether or not it's safe?

Whats that one movie where the kids are killing cats? Like they were drowning them and stuff and hanging them in trees and beating them with sticks?

Amores Perros has two huge factors that need to be considered;
1 - The dogs aren't just a savage device in order to shock, but a major thematic element.
2 - Every chapter of the film features huge nods to the story of Kain & Abel
Context is everything. It's not needless animal harm (also, the dogs were not harmed during the making of it), without it, the human story would carry much less weight

Oh yeah, of course. I kept saying this to my sister. I also told her the "dead" dogs were actually sedated. That still bugged her.

Fantastic movie. I noticed it doesn't have its own thread. You should start it.

The part we speak of is not too big of a spoiler but I think Pulp Fiction is old enough where it doesn't need spoiler protection anymore.

I was talking about I Am Legend. Both people that referenced it spoiler tagged the movie as well. I love Pulp Fiction, and I'm also bothered when Marcellus shoots that woman. The camera work during that scene is superb, it's all so real. I love it. I wrote my final film paper last semester on the director's choices of Pulp Fiction.

The water buffalo sacrifice at end of Apocalypse Now, while fascinating, is pretty disturbing, more so due to the atmosphere of the film than anything. Still, watching the look on its face as its hacked alive and it slowly falls to the ground isn't exactly easy.
And just because it was easy to find, its a little after 3 minutes into the video.

Haha, watch Cannibal Holocaust.
They have the actual killing of animals in that movie. Try willing your way through the genuine stabbing/slicing of a muskrat, decapitation of a turtle, de-facing of a squirrel, and beating of a pig.
And I'm not kidding.

Cannibal Holocaust had a bunch of animals including a huge turtle, monkey, and a pig killed for real on screen and it didn't bother me. Since most movie's don't do that animal violence doesn't bother me in movies because its fake just like human violence.
The possum was probably the worst one.

There are alot of shitty exploitation pictures like that. Is it Canibal Holicost or Cannibal Ferox (or another film altogether) where they tie a man to a wooden stake and hack off his dick

The scene in The Butterfly Effect, the crazy kid puts Evan's dog in a sack and burns it gets me every time. I can't watch.

Its just part of the story. I'm all for treating animals kindly, but in movies, since its fiction, as long as its not disturbing and gratuitous its okay.

Yes, it is pretty bad.
I did find it interesting that the director made the cast sign contracts to not appear in publlic for a year after the film to proomote the fact that the movie was real footage and that they were in fact dead.

what? i grew up around tons of animals. half of my huge family lived in the redneck country with multiple dogs of all shapes and sizes and breeds. it didn't matter if they were a german shepherd or a chihuahua, they were sweet dogs that wouldn't harm a fly. but the ones that are crazy violent are the ones that get treated like crap and chained up and "played" with too roughly.
if you're talking about my abortion statement, then i don't know what to say. i still stand by that.

My friend just showed me the movie equilibrium for the first time the other night and this is making me think of the dog scene in it. you can hear them killing the dogs in the background and all the sounds they make and it was really kind of saddening there.
That effected me alot more than ony of the people killed in that movie.

it sad when animals die in movies, but in the real world, if you actually care more about animals dying than humans, there are some serious problems there.

Depends on the human and depends on the animal.
