Set Your Goals – This Will Be The Death Of Us
Release Date: July 21, 2009
Record Label: Epitaph

Crunkcore (http://cdn.buzznet.com/assets/imgx/8/2/2/0/8/3/1/orig-8220831.jpg). Bad haircuts (http://hangout.altsounds.com/attachments/news/309d1195132396-the-maine-signs-to-fearless-records-themainenewphoto.jpg). Neon clothes (http://www.studentsoftheworld.info/sites/music/img/25430_cobra%20starshhip.jpg). These are a few of the major ingredients that are causing the death of our scene, and, at the very least, causing the death of many fans. And even though bands of this nature continue to regurgitate the latest trend into something generic, I feel fine because bands like Set Your Goals continue to exist and shift through all the bullshit. And with their second album, and Epitaph debut, This Will Be The Death Of Us, the Orinda, CA, sextet continue to separate themselves from the rest of the pack.

In a year jokingly referred to as “the pop-punk resurgence” by a few users, there aren’t many bands within the genre that will release an album as good as “This Will Be The Death Of Us.” Produced by Mike Green (Paramore, The Matches), the twelve track album is like Power Rangers – the tracks are awesome individually, but become unstoppable when listened to together.

Set Your Goals displays an explosiveness that many bands cannot match. The title track sets the tone with its gritty guitar work, as vocalists Matt Wilson and Jordan Brown harmonize nicely throughout. Vinne Caruana adds a powerful verse to close out the track. Songs like “Look Closer” and “Like You To Me” pack a powerful punch with a delicious crunch, while “Summer Jam” is a sing-along anthem, chronicling the band’s early tour memories.

The brawn of the album comes in the form of the next few tracks. “The Fallen” keeps the soul of the early demo while making it a bit sharper. The call and return between Wilson and Brown shines, while drummer Michael Ambrose sets the pace. “The Few That Remain” features huge breakdowns and a killer cameo by Hayley Williams, thus ensuring this track as a sure-fire fan favorite. John Gula lends his brutal voice to “Gaia Bleeds (Make Way For Man),” which is the heaviest song SYG has ever written.

Other than busting your chops with their musicianship, Set Your Goals also takes a stance with their lyrics, tackling real issues and questioning authority. “Flawed Methods of Persecution & Punishment” sends out some socially conscious lyrics wrapped into incredibly catchy gang vocals. “Our Ethos: A Legacy To Pass On” channels some ‘90s skate punk (thanks to guitarists Audelio Flores and Daniel Coddaire), creating a raucous track that features Chad Gilbert yelling his lungs out. The song closes out the album with Set Your Goals primary message of positivity.

This Will Be The Death Of Us is the return of the pop-punk you know and love. Never taking a moment to slow down, Set Your Goals has improved in every way from their 2006 debut, Mutiny!. It has the edge that has been missing in the genre for a few years, as the band is spectacular at writing a catchy hook without it sounding glossy and overproduced. Folks, this is what you’ve been waiting for all summer, maybe even in all of 2009, as This Will Be The Death Of Us is the ultimate jam. Summer officially begins on July 21st, 2009, and you better believe Set Your Goals will keep you moshing into 2010 and beyond.

Great review, well written.

I don't like this band though, so I probably wont bother checking it out.

The part about the resurgence of pop punk too I don't think will come to fruition. A big blink tour won't make all the crappy bands suddenly become good

PowerCorps1985
07/03/09, 10:08 AM
i dont think this review mentioned enough about how much heavier this album is than mutiny or reset. And i would give it higher than an 87%. Album is damn near perfect as far pop punk goes, and an 87% translates into a B+. I give it 99% by your guys standards comparing it to some of the albums i watch getting 90% and above on here. Plus you didnt touch on the badass composition flow tracks like "Hoffman Lenses" or "Arrival notes" that show the bands growth. Its these tracks that turn the album from a slew of songs into a bonafide composition.

Neither of the guitar players on this album were present for the recording of mutiny. Its basically Set Your Goals 2.0 and its a very exciting change.

also you kids should really be excited for the 21st for the four year strong cover album. massachusetts is about to show you punk goes so and so kids how things are done.

Right...but as of July, Dream Homes is still better than TWBTDOU. Which means that this album can't possibly be the best pop punk album of the year.

Actually, clothing can be a huge part of culture, especially in a culture that's ALWAYS been obsessed with imagine, and is now even more than ever.

I actually think the "scene" is just changing.. It always does. Look back to 1998 and the ska and skate punk scene.. Then fast forward to 2001 and you got all these (what were pegged as) emo bands blowing up. To me, that's what's happening now and no I'm not stoked on it for the most part (I think 3OH!3 is just some no substance fun) but the most important thing we can all do is support the artists out there that's still doing it strong like thrice and syg and thursday and others that aren't doing what's considered "trendy". If we don't support them enough they ill just die out and soon enough a majority of the "scene" will consist of the bands this site hates cause all the good ones had to break up cause their records aren't selling and the tours they put on aren't selling enough tickets but tours with "crunk core" bands are..

I cannot think of any other band that does punk like this now. They sound like Good Riddance without the edge, although some of the cuts off this latest album seem a little harder. I miss the days of Good Riddance, Bigwig, etc.
...Four Year Strong, the two bands sound pretty similar imo.

Well, I would say that All Time Low used to be able to set themselves apart... but with the recent release, I feel as though they share the same intentions as the Maine (a poppy, sugar-coated summer album about getting ripped and having sex and all the rest) Not that it's a bad thing. Different music for different times, different places... it's all good.

As for Set Your Goals... that's the type of thing you can listen to everyday and be completely amped about... Hoping this new record does not disappoint... guessing it won't. The review is great, and I can't wait to get my shaking hands on this monumental record!

I love both bands. I was first introduced to FYS, but then I heard everyone drawing comparisons to SYG, so I had to check them out. I personally like SYG more.

And yes, FYS do use quite a bit of synth. Another thing that sets them apart is their use of breakdowns. The breakdowns are almost thrown in just to be funny. But they are usually short and sweet. They aren't overdone and the band knows how to implement them without playing it out and making it annoying. The vocalist in FYS was the former vocalist of Bury Your Dead. So there will be this random breakdown and the vocalist will go into rough vocals/growls. It's such a contrast to the upbeat poppiness of the songs that it's just funny.

This is really nothing new, as a lot of bands out there are trying to do that hardcore/pop hybrid these days. But I think that FYS and SYG both integrate the hardcore elements a hell of a lot better than bands like... say... A Day to Remember. ADTR sounds like a band who can't make up their mind whether they want to be a metal band or a pop band, what with their schizophrenic back and forth of metal and pop instrumentation and the same vocalist doing both singing and growling. FYS and SYG manage to stay rooted in pop punk, while giving slight nods to the hardcore crowd. The bands do so tastefully, skillfully, and without feeling like a gimmick. They just feel...real. And I like that a lot.

Okay, while I consider myself a bit of a NOFX fan, you can't deny the band has been doing the same exact shit for over 20 years now. The only variation their music ever has in it is if it's more or less political. I listened to Coaster, and quite frankly... it didn't do it for me. The only song that I really appreciated was the song Mike wrote about his dad. The rest of the album was just... eh... Maybe you really liked it. That's your opinion, but mine is that I'm really getting tired of hearing the same album from NOFX like 20 times in a row.

Bands like Set Your Goals and Four Year Strong are a breath of fresh air in such a stale genre. The world could use more bands like them. Bands without a ridiculous image or a really lame gimmick. While NOFX isn't really gimmicky at all and they do just look like regular dudes, it's annoying to hear the same hate on the government and anti-war songs over and over and over. Yawn...

I, for one, could not be more stoked for the This Will Be The Death Of Us. I'm already a huge fan of the band and I mean... fuck... look at all those guest vocalists! It's this year's quintessential summer album, IMO.

I'd like to quote the great Alexisonfire in response to this one.

Here's an excerpt from one of the best songs ever written, "Get Fighted:"

So make sure you love like you've never been hurt
And when you dance, dance like there's no one watching you

Because this shit's not about pants
And this shit's not about shirts
And this shit's definitely not about hair
This shit is about having a good fucking time
Maybe the music isn't dead
Maybe the music isn't dead
Maybe we all just forgot what it fucking sounded like

The problem is that people are more concerned with image than substance.

AFAIC, this band sold out just like every other trendy neon band...they just did it in a different way. They completely deserted the local scene here and started writing watered down pop-hardcore way before their breakthrough, and this new record is just a continuation of that move to the mainstream center. Just like w/ Green Day, nobody from the bay area hardcore/punk scene really gives a shit anymore about SYG (assuming they ever did). I'm not taking away from what they do, but to treat them like the leaders of some sort of true-to-self, non-sellout movement completely misrepresents what they really are...

I love how as soon as any band signs to a major label, people have to start talking shit about how they've gone and sold out. It's hilarious. Every punk band that ever manages to get popular and people actually know about are deemed "sellouts" by self-proclaimed "true punks." Whatever the fuck that's supposed to mean. We get it, you listened to them first back before anyone else even knew who they were. But guess what? Maybe no one else knew who they were because they were local! Ever think of that? You want to guess why bands leave their hometown to go tour or sign to a major label? Would it be to get a little exposure maybe?

Sorry that your favorite band didn't stay in your hometown and play shows for only you and your little local scene, bud. Sorry they went on tour and found a following, got signed, and are doing pretty well with their music. Sorry they didn't stay "punk" and keep underground where no one even knew of their existence. You know, because they really care about what you think of them.

Set Your Goals is a band that is aware of their long time fans feeling like that, and they lash right back out at them for being assholes about it.

"We Do It For the Money, OBVIOUSLY!"

Who are you to say what is real and what is fake - and who here matters anyway?
It's nothing that I haven't heard
We're all sellouts in your eyes, that's no surprise
Well, we never tried to disguise everything we want to be
But honestly...
Who cares what you have to say?
Why do you hate what you can't relate to?
(Well, it's not like it could lead us to our graves)
Exploitation is always having to be heard
(If we share the same stage why do you act this way)
Everyday
So what is real, and what is fake - and do you matter anyway?
It's nothing that I haven't heard

And there's this from "This Song Is Definitely Not About A Girl"

A catchy tune to you but I'm glad you're enjoying yourselves.
You fake like you know it so well, so tell me what this song is about.

It has nothing to do with the fact that they gained some exposure or signed to a label. It has everything to do with how they knowingly plagerized other local band's music, completely shitted all over their local scene, disrespected their fans, altered their sound *and then* did everything to quote-unquote "sell out". Cool? This is a band that used to encourage bro-downs and sexual harassment for attention..please don't waste paragraphs defending them...

While they definitely are not the deepest band in the world, they're fun. Some of their shit is just hilarious. And they haven't exactly been doing the same shit over and over. They've experimented with different sounds. Hefty Fine had some almost techno type music on it. It wasn't just straight punk type stuff. I love how they try to sound all serious. Like it sounds like you're listening to some really deep love song or something but the lyrics are totally not what you would expect from that type of song. Plus, dude can sing and rap faster than most give him credit for. I wonder if they're gonna make a new album any time soon...

Sounds like you have some severe personal problems with this band. When you say plagiarizing, do you mean stealing their lyrics verbatim? And what the hell is a "bro-down?"

No, it's worse than that. There was a local band here that wrote a farily well known "bay area" song, I don't want to say which (band or song), but it was barely reworked for the national level and Set Your Goals took ALL the credit for it. If you remember back in 05, Jordan actually got punched in the face at a show in the south day by a skinny little scene kid for that very reason. Bro-downs are fist fights between "bros" at local shows, almost always instigated by bands when they're trying to come up and need some attention. Matt and Jordan used to scream out into the small crowds and get these brocore kids so wound up. One girl actually got her face slammed into the side of a chain linked fence just for being in the way. Which brings me to the borderline sexual harassment that used to go down, but we won't go there...

I have seen bands tell people to get crazy just to pump the crowd up. But they encourage the hardcore dancers to get rowdy in the process. I really hate those kids because they don't even pay attention to anybody around them. I saw a girl get kicked right in the face on time. Seems like most people really don't care about hurting people anymore. It's all just about how "brutal" you can be. There are still some good people out there who care though. Some really huge guy knocked me down at a show once, and a dude reached out to pick me up. It's good to know that there are people looking out for each other.

I've never actually been to one of SYG's shows, so I wouldn't know about them encouraging fights. But yeah, the way some guys treat girls at shows is downright wrong. I've seen guys deliberately push girls into a mosh just because they think it's funny.

I was at a ADTR show with my old roommate and there was this one hardcore dancer kid who kept getting close to people on purpose. He was really being an asshole, just causing trouble for people, almost trying to hit them. So my roommate went up to him and punched him in the face. He got kicked out of the venue, but at least the kid got the point. Everyone should be able to enjoy a show however they want, but no one should be allowed to get away with causing others harm. People should make room for whoever wants to dance, and dancers should not get close to people on purpose.

I'm pretty much an average sized guy. Not super skinny, not overly large, just somewhere in between. Most those fucking brocore kids and hardcore dancers are easily bigger than I am, both in height and weight, and they're out there knocking around skinny scene kids who weigh less than I do. It's a scary thought. I've seen girls and guys leave shows with cuts and bruises, fucked up arms, legs, ankles etc...

I wonder if they're gonna make a new album any time soon...
ya thats what i meant you know their funny shit. lol that band is funny as hell. some of their shit i just dont understand lol

I once saw a hardcore punk dude in a jean vest at Warped with a shaved head start pushing everyone to make a mosh pit. Then he got taken down and kicked by 5 or 6 skinny, pale emo kids in girl jeans. It's the coolest thing I've ever seen, ha ha. They kicked his ass and then helped him up afterwards. I agree with you guys though, when people go crazy at shows they need to be respectful of those around them. I know some get carried away, but they need to keep in mind that they're not the only ones that paid to watch their favorite band play.

Yeah, people get too crazy sometimes. There was a kid who got thrown on the ground and stomped on at a Devil Wears Prada show I went to once. He had to get carried out by two security guys. He probably left on a stretcher. I thought it was kind of ironic that this guy got totally destroyed during a christian band's set. Like they were supposed to be sharing this message of love and peace, and here this guy is getting stomped on. To this day I wonder if he was okay or if he had any injuries. I mean from what I saw of it, it looked like it could have been bad.

Someone either from the venue or a band memeber should give a safety announcement before shows. I've heard it done before, and there are plenty of bands that do it. They'll say something like "Now, if someone falls down, someone give them a hand. Help them back up." Just think about it like this... if you were the one who fell down and there were people stomping all around you, close to your head, your hands, your chest and stomach... you would want someone to help get you out of there. So if you see someone hit the ground, reach out and give them a hand.

You know, it might sound a little more than cheesy, but when I got knocked down and was having trouble getting back up because everyone around me was going apeshit, it was just kind of touching to see some guy I didn't even know reach down to give me a hand. Just this guy noticing and going out of his way to help me out... that was really cool of him.

I like when bands look out for their fans like that. It's pretty lame when band members actually encourage violence and getting crazy because some people just go to shows to enjoy the music and don't want to get kicked at, punched in the face or thrown down and stomped on.

That's the thing. Most guys like that just want to get shit started, then they pussy out when someone actually tries to fight back. It's pretty stupid. Most guys run around at shows just pushing people trying to get them riled up, but then when it comes to an actual mosh or someone wanting to beat their ass, they back away.

It's really all this bro-core bullshit, trying to act like a hardass at shows. All those little scene kids throwing windmills and kicking the air think they look brutal or whatever, but wouldn't know how to hold their own if it came to an actual fight.

And that's pretty hilarious about the emo kids ganging up on the skinhead. That would have been a sight to see. I don't think anyone really deserves to get hurt at a show, but if someone's running around fucking with people just to try and start shit, then someone should put them in their place.

There are two vocalists in SYG, not to mention quite a few guest vocalists on this album. To which vocalist are you referring?
