The Academy Is... (http://www.theacademyis.com) - From The Carpet EP
Release Date: February 21, 2006
Record Label: Fueled By Ramen (http://www.fueledbyramen.com)

Over the past year, The Academy Is… has sold over 100k of their Fueled By Ramen debut, Almost Here, have toured with the likes of Fall Out Boy and Midtown, have headlined their own nationwide tour, and have been embraced by TRL and 15 year old girls everywhere. They have boarded the “buzz” train and are on their way to a major label deal, so to keep the buzz pulsating and to satisfy fans (old and new alike), they have released a 6 track EP titled From The Carpet, exclusive only to iTunes. Now while I strongly disagree with this “digital only” crap, The Academy Is… (vocalist Will Beckett, guitarists Mike Carden and Tom Conrad, bassist Adam Siska, and drummer Andy Mrotek) do not disappoint with this EP. With 2 new acoustic songs, one John Lennon cover, and 3 new versions of favorites from the debut, this EP is definitely a must-have for all TAI fans.

This EP begins horribly with the basement demo of “Pour Yourself A Drink.” It’s terribly produced, too short, not catchy, and just plain hard to get into. This definitely starts the EP off poorly, and I recommend you just skip this song completely. Hopefully, TAI will work on it some more, and perhaps it’ll sound better when produced correctly and includes the entire band. Thankfully, the acoustic version of the new track, “The Fever,” picks the EP back up. This is a fun and catchy song, which is what TAI is best at. Will Beckett’s voice sounds great on this also. The next song is the Nashville version of “The Phrase That Pays.” A slower rendition of the original, it features the banjo and goes for the Southern country feel. Overall, this track is good, but only after a few listens. Following that is the John Lennon cover of “Working Class Hero,” a moody song that takes a while to get into, but Beckett’s voice really captures the song and makes it worthwhile. The final tracks are the best ones, however, starting with the piano version of “Down And Out” featuring Sheldon Miller. This is easily my favorite track on the EP, especially since I’m a sucker for good piano tunes. The EP closes with one of my favorite tracks from Almost Here, “Black Mamba.” Here, we get the “3 In The Morning Party Mix” with features the maracas, which add some flavor to the track, and Beckett’s great voice again. The thing that make this track so much fun are the handclaps incorporated at the end, thus leaving you in the party mood.

Overall, The Academy Is… give their fans a little bit of fun with the release of this EP. The only thing that dampers the good time on this EP are the facts that this is an iTunes exclusive and the terrible first track. Other than that, this is definitely worth the $5.94 or whatever you’ll spend on iTunes for it. Fun and catchy, it has everything the casual TAI would want in a release. Definitely get a hold of From The Carpet, it’ll hold you over till the next Academy Is… album.

Sorry Drew, I'm a fan of TAI, but with the exception of "The Fever," I did not like this EP at all.

I'm not really a big fan of this e.p., it seems to remove most of the energy that makes them great. I do like "The Fever" though. And it's also available on napster, so it isn't really an itunes exclusive.

Haha, a lot of you really don't like it eh? It took me a few listens to get into it, but I really like it. I just must really like acoustic versions and piano tracks haha.

i like this ep. and i'm in the minority in saying that pour yourself a drink is one of my favorite tracks.

this ep is baddd. and i like tai. they should have left off track one because it sounds like crap. not doing any production work on it is not cool. the acoustic stuff takes away from the fun of tai. they're poppy and exciting and their acoustic stuff is the exact opposite. the fever is good though. it's the only good track here. and even then it's not great. im looking forward to a finished full band version.

You can still have a lot of energy in acoustic songs. Will uses his voice very well to create energy in most of the songs, plus you can't deny the fact that Black Mamba on here is really fun, I mean, it has HANDCLAPS!

I must agree with you on 'Pour Yourself Another Drink'. It's very poor quaility, and I skipped it after a few seconds. I love every other track EXCEPT 'Down And Out'. I just wasn't a big fan of it. I couldn't get into it. Which is kinda sad, cause I was really looking forward to hearing it on piano. The John Lennon cover was probably my favorite on this EP though. It's a good song originally, but its incredible by TAI.8-)

i have to agree with a lot of ppl here, i'm a huge TIA fan and this EP really was a letdown, don't get me wrong, i love acoustic versions of songs but William sounds like he's struggling to hit some notes here... I still love this band but a good producer and studio does work wonders for this band. not worth the $5.94 i paid.

It's kind of insulting that they expect you to pay for this. It's like a bunch of demos. The production is horrible for a studio acoustic EP

Thank you... I'm making a "Claps & Snaps" playlist right now, and Black Mamba (3 am party mix) is getting the top slot. Is that gay? It seemed pretty cool when I first had the idea... anyway

i think it's awesome that the first track is crappy. it gives the song a raw feel to it...which is cool...b/c it's about a raw feeling. Perhaps i'm just romanticizing this band a bit...but i love that song...yes the recording is crappy...but i feel like it was done on purpose. The members of this band are very particular about the way that they do things...and i don't think anyone stopped to take that into account.

i don't know why they would put poor sounding song on the record; for the first song... anyway the fact that this is only on i-tunes makes me not able to buy it, i have to download it or something :|

These acoustic songs, like The Fever, only prove how good Will's voice is. Okay EP, would have liked the first song to sound like a song, but otherwise very good.

you sir are my hero...... I can see people's complaint that it seems lackluster but I am also a sucker for acoustic and piano songs so I was hooked. It takes a few listens to get used to because I'm used to hear them sounding so polished so the roughness of the acoustic tracks took some getting used to

I'm with you if their second full length is as dissapointing as this, but all things considered I had pretty low expectations

I agree about the first song. I dont understand why they didnt just take the extra few hours and mix it correctly, it would improve the song tenfold. I didn't enjoy the Nashville version of "Phrase" either, i didnt feel like it captured the essence of the song. Good review

I may be alone in this one, but I thought the EP was excellent. I like listening to different versions of songs... and though Pour Yourself A Drink isn't very good quality on the EP, it's one of my favorite songs for them to play live
