View Full Version : college athletes getting paid
http://sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=2337810
you know what really grinds my gears? the topic of college athletes getting any more money than they already get, full scholarship athletes want more money to cover the "full cost of attendance", meaning money to pay for things while you are at school, this topic makes me mad because i was a college athlete, a walk on tennis player without scholarship, we played matches in both the fall and spring seasons, we travelled in small passenger bags, making trips as far as 9 hours, shared rooms with 5 guys a piece, despite all the work involved i graduated with a 3.79 grade point average, now we have these guys who claim that getting an education that would normally cost over 100,000 dollars is not enough, they also receive a free place to stay, free meals, and free textbooks, does anybody else think that it is a joke that they want even more money, remember that these people are the basketball and football players, these are the people filing the suit, i hate to say all the fball and bball players are bad, but a good amount dont give a crap about going to classes, now think about all the kids who had to work their asses off just to get some financial aid to get an education, but will end up paying back loans for years, and these guys want an extra 2,000 dollars so that they can buy themselves some new clothes, the whole thing is garbage
i'm for it says this soon to be college baseball player

I think the kids who get scholarships for sports should be forced to play all 4 years, or they have to pay the scholarship back (they'll be rich anyways).

The "they'll be rich anyway" part really only applies to a select few who get drafted with big signing bonuses. Nearly EVERY NCAA D-1 football player in America who gets an athletic scholarship is on a FULL scholarship. This includes all the bench sitters, kickers, 3rd stringers, etc. who have been recruited and made an offer. So, you are saying that if a guy gets hurt, or quits, etc. before his four years is up he should have to pay it back? Do you realize how many players per year who are on big scholarships get injured, fail out, or otherwise don't pan out for the program?
I'm a college baseball player on a scholarship but baseball rarely gives full rides. Basketball and Football are the big money sports and while I definitely think it is stupid that these guys get all the extra money that they do....I think college athletes in general get a really bad rap when not many people understand how much hard work is put in every day and how few people actually fit into the whole dumb, careless, stupid jock stigma.

Bullshit. A scholarship is plenty for them.
It upsets me how many more full-ride sports scholarships I see than academic scholarships.

i don't like the idea of them getting paid extra money to buy bling bling and trick out their cars and shit.
but it's hard enough for them to dedicate enough time to the team and still make classes. it's damn near impossible for them to get a job to help with the other costs of living that aren't room, board and books. in a perfect world, there'd be a campus job included with a scholarship, one that works around your schedule. but with all the corruption that'll never happen cause the star players would make so much more than somebody else doing the same job.
so i'm all for a change that helps them support themselves a little more. not much, but enough to get them by.

I think what Tate meant was that guys who leave early to go pro (NBA or NFL since we're talking basketball and football here) should have to pay it back - because they will be making millions.
But then there comes the question of guys like Kelenna Azubuike (Kentucky) and Kennedy Winston (Bama) who both declared for the NBA Draft last year, and didn't get drafted.

Well...a scholarship is paid on a semester to semester basis. If they leave, the team can use the scholarship to recruit a new player. That is why the deadline to declare is before the National Signing Day.

Each team, sport has a limited number of scholarships.

That is wrong. They are not all full scholarships. Atleast not full athletic scholarships.

a good number of these guys do not even go to classes, the biggest travesty is that these guys are given an education that thousands of kids are paying big bucks for, but they do not really care
and i think the argument that the school uses kids to make money is an old one, the players use the schools as a way to jump to the pros

It doesn't matter anyways they get money from Alumni and boosters, some guys i know around here said that Michael Vick had huge coke parties that they went to, i don't see a guy who is just at school on a scholarship w/ no job having money for a ton of cocaine

I agree with both parts.

Yeah, and there are few if any sports movies that don't show the obviousness of that situation (yeah, I know movies aren't the most credible source).
