View Full Version : Half-year top shows of 2009

I saw a thread like this in the general forum for a "Albums of the year so far" so, in an effort to avoid doing all this shitty-ass work I have on my plate, thought I'd start this thread. I realize people probably don't consume as much live music as they do albums (seeing as it's more costly) but thought we could get an interesting thread going. Here's my top 10 list:

1) Green Day @ Webster Hall (NYC) - Hands down this was the better of the two shows even if it was in the slightly bigger Webster Hall. The band played more proficiently than the night before and the crowd requests were better.
2) Green Day @ Bowery Ballroom (NYC) - Still a great show and I'm not gonna lie, I'm really throwing this on here for bragging rights. Seeing one of the biggest bands in the world in a club that holds 500 people is just really amazing.
3) Jimmy Eat World @ Terminal 5 (NYC) (Clarity 10X tour) - Incredible to see the band go flawlessly through such a beautiful album. The "encore" set could've gone a little deeper than the usual hits but I was happy with the inclusion of "No Sensitivity"
4) No Doubt @ Bamboozle (East Rutherford, NJ) - My first time seeing them and, though I was an asshole and pushed through the crowd (was the first time I got my own "assss-hooole" chant directed at me), it was well worth it. Those guys (and girl) are in phenomenal shape and they sounded flawless.
5) Bloc Party @ Terminal 5 (NYC) - The band finally matches the intensity of their studio releases and the crowd responds accordingly.
6) Metallica @ Prudential Center (Newark, NJ) - My first time seeing the metal kings and they prove just how professional and proficient they are.
7) Third Eye Blind @ Roseland Ballroom (NYC) - I still can't believe that in 2009 I was standing at a packed 3500 strong Third Eye Blind show without them having released an album in 6 years. It goes to prove that if a band simply plays to their core and forgoes whoring themselves out to every media outlet available, they will still be able to sustain a strong live show (unlike, say, Smash Mouth, who probably couldn't fill an 800-person club).
8) Franz Ferdinand @ Roseland Ballroom (NYC) - The dance party just never ends with these Scottish dudes.
9) Friendly Fires/White Lies @ Bowery Ballroom (NYC) - Two U.K. buzz bands tear through songs from both their debuts in New York's premier "cool" venue. Watch out for both these bands.
10) Papa Roach @ Grammercy Theater (NYC) - Yes, the black sheep of the group. These guys have kind of evolved into corny though perfectly acceptable 80's sleeze-rock, but their live show as improved so much and it's great to see a good ol' rock' n' roll show every once in a while.

Great thread, Phil.

I'm going to exclude Bonnaroo and Bamboozle from this list, and stick strictly to "shows". I'll put my festival list up later.

1 - Jimmy Eat World / Reubens Accomplice @ NYC 2/23 JEW playing Clarity was just amazing. What a solid performance.

2 - United Nations / Acid Tiger @ NYC 5/23 Very short, but it was everything about punk music that is missing from "the scene" today. Geoff gave me the microphone for half the songs, it was incredible. Great to see him back the way I grew up seeing his other band--grimy basements.

3 - Brand New / Kevin Devine @ Ewing 1/23 This proved BN still had it. Great setlist, great sound. Took a seated show to a new level.

4 - The Gaslight Anthem / Pela / Good Old War @ Asbury Park 5/9 Amazing performances by all three bands. This list is actually really swappable up to this point.. in a different mood I may put this at #1.

5 - Thursday @ NYC 3/4 Shit tour, great performance. Only thing keeping this from #1 is the setlist was weak by Thursday's standards.

6 - The Gaslight Anthem / Heartless Bastards @ NYC 3/27 Great performance by The Gaslight Anthem. Too bad I missed Good Old War; Hearthless Bastards were disposable.

7 - Anthony Raneri / Vinny Caruana / Destry @ Hoboken 6/18 Vinnie played a decent mix, and Anthony was stellar. Destry was surprisingly good for their first ever show.

8 - Jack’s Mannequin @ NYC 6/19 I have this full set for download, if anyone wants. It was great seeing Andrew acoustic.

9 - Brand New @ Mahwah 4/3 Not the best BN show, but it alright.

10 - Jack’s Mannequin @ NYC 4/22 Not nearly as good as November, but it was still good. Needed a better setlist, perhaps.

Clearly Bruce Springsteen, NIN, Beastie Boys, Dirty Projectors, and a ton of other Bamboozle/Bonnaroo acts would be on a list, so I'll make that later.

No particular order

Green Day @ Central Park - Awesome to see them in front of a crowd of less than 2,000. Only a 9 song setlist, but they are amazing live and have great chemistry with the crowd.
No Doubt/Paramore @ Susquehanna Bank Center - First time seeing No Doubt and they did not cease to amaze. Paramore sounded better than usual also.
Third Eye Blind @ Bamboozle - Also another first time band for me. Put on an phenomenal show and enjoyed hearing a 11-minute version of Jumper
Jack's Mannequin @ PNC Bank Arts Center - Nice to see this band again and enjoyed hearing them play 1 SoCo song.
Disturbed/Killswitch Engage @ Penn State - I know I'll catch a lot of crap for this, but both put on a great show and seeing them live makes me wonder why Disturbed get hated on so much.

All I can think of right now of the top of my head.

The St. Louis date of that tour was my favorite show of the year so far, and probably won't be beat. Such a damn good show from every band. Especially NFG, SYG, and Fireworks. No offense to Bayside.

Upon looking up my list of shows for the year, I realized that I haven't seen all that much. Hopefully, the second half of 2009 will be greater than the first half.

My top shows:
1.) No Doubt @ Borgata (so glad I chose this over Bamboozle)
2.) The Gaslight Anthem/Good Ole War @ Trocadero
3.) Presidents of the USA @ Irving Plaza
4.) Ted Leo and the Pharmacists/Titus Andronicus @ Maxwell's
5.) Coldplay/Pete Yorn @ Hersheypark Stadium
6.) The Decemberists @ Tower Theatre
7.) Ra Ra Riot @ Webster Hall
8.) Delta Spirit @ Electric Factory
9.) Saves the Day @ Starland Ballroom

Dishonorable Mention:
1.) The Shins @ Electric Factory (Just terrible.)
(tie) Davy Jones @ Bergen PAC (Davy Jones can still sing. But the show was all sorts of cringe-worthy awfulness.)

Skipped (had tickets and didn't attend):
1.) Fountains of Wayne @ Maxwell's
2.) Bloc Party @ Electric Factory

Bonnaroo 2009 takes the whole cake for me I mean (Phish [2 times], Bruce Springsteen, Beastie Boys, The Mars Volta, Phoenix, Public Enemy, Girl Talk, David Byrne, NINE INCH NAILS!!, Michael Ian Black and Michael Showalter, , Andrew Bird, Jimmy Fallon, MGMT, 6 hour moe. set, Wilco)
but
2. Phish- June 19th, 2009 at Verizon Wireless Music Center
3. New Found Glory/Bayside/Fireworks/Set Your Goals- May 5th, 2009 at Murat Theatre
4. Jack's Mannequin- July 2nd, 2009 at The Lawn at White River
4. Fall Out Boy/All Time Low-May 15, 2009 at The Lawn At White River
5. Warped Tour- July 7th, 2009- Verizon

Honorable Mentions: This is going to sound really gay but I had a fun time at the New Kids on the Block Concert and the Lil Wayne Concert. I mean I dont know why but I had fun at them with the people I was with and man thats all I can really say sadly. I didn't hit up alot of concerts in 09 before the summer because of lacrosse but I am having a great concert summer.

From what I've heard, that's really true. I've seen them a few times over the past 3+ years and they've never put on a less than amazing show, but I've heard over and over again that they're kind of boring and not very good from people that aren't familiar with their music.
