View Full Version : Just moved to Orlando, FL..
So yeah, I just moved to Orlando, FL with my family. Problem is, I dont know shit about the area, i dont know anybody..im 21 years old so i can go to bars and stuff but heres the problem. I dont know the area, and Im pretty bad at approaching people myself to make friends. I mean, theres nothing wrong with me at all..im a normal guy, good personality and everything but im real intimidated by everything around here. I come from New York, you would think I would know how to make friends by 21 years old but I always had the same clique my whole life. I dont know really what im looking for as far as advice or anything..but, if anybody can give me pointers on meeting people (being from florida/orlando area is a plus cause you would have basic knowledge of what people do down here), that would be awesome..hell, maybe somebody is from here and would want to go to a show or whatever, I dont care..but I could use some help. I moved down here last week so Im not DIEING, and I am sure in time everything will work itself out but, you know, I cant help but be curious lol. So im looking for any help in any way. Sorry to sound desperate, Ive never lived anywhere but the town I was born in my whole life..The south is SO much different than New York. Thanks guys.

The Orlando area is a gigantic vacation spot so I'm sure it could be hard to meet people depending on where exactly you live. I go there fairly often being from Tampa Bay (about an hour and a half away), but it's usually for concerts or to do touristy things just like anyone else who would visit. Wish I could be more helpful, but a few cool places I've been to shows at in the Orlando area are Backbooth, The Social, and although I don't like it, any of the bigger bands (not huge, but think Less Than Jake, Flogging Molly) passing through always hit House of Blues it seems. There are others, but most things I've been to have been at those 3. Of course, there's Hard Rock too, but I've never had a good experience there.
did anyone mention orlando bloom?

There's this place in Orlando called Twistee Treat. Bring $10, and get ready to eat ALOT of Ice Cream. It's near the Mcdonalds/Walgreens area of S Orange Blossom Trail.
There you go champ.

oh wow this reminds me of the time i moved to DC from the Philippines when i was 14. so yeah i know what you're talking about when it comes to moving to a place where you don't know anything about.
well, i'm not from florida, but i think the rules of meeting people are pretty universal. act nice, be approachable, you know , the usual generic stuff. but what about get a job or volunteer somewhere? internships? that could be a way to meet people, since school is out. go to the local stores, especially record stores and book stores. it's a pretty cool way to meet people when you see them pick up a book/cd that you both like. it's an easy way to start a conversation. what about friends of friends? (of friends?) haha
sorry i don't really know much about florida so i can't give you a real advice. but i know it sucks because i've been there. i do wish you luck though! :)

Welcome to Fl buddy
Church street is the big bar area. Right by there is the Social, its a pretty popular venue. The house of Blues is in the Downtown Disney area, all that stuff is in the southwest part of town. Orlando gets pretty great shows. I meet people at shows all the time, probably a good place to start.

1) Backbooth
2) Club Firestone
3) AKA Lounge

Cool Places to Hang Out -

**Park Avenue (in Winter Park) is a good place to spend time. It's near Rollins College so there are a lot of college students around there
**The UCF area is also a good place to meet people.
Orlando can be tough because it's quite clique-y, but people are still very friendly. Orlando is soooo much more than a vacation spot. We have a flourishing arts and music community. There's a lot to do if you know where to go. I'm a barrel of information about Orlando (because I live here) and the scene, so don't hesitate messaging me if you want to know anything about the town!

Yeah, I definitely hate mosquitoes, but they really aren't that bad over here.
Good question that nobody has asked yet is what part of Orlando did you move to? Casselberry, altamonte, winter park, college park, downtown, Thornton park, ucf, Oviedo, winter gardens, etc. That's gonna affect where is a good place to hang out.

It really doesn't affect where you hang out. The good places are located all over town. You can't hole yourself up in one of the suburbs.

Best instores ever! Brand New, Cursive, Tilly and the Wall, Manchester Orchestra, The Gaslight Anthem, Minus the Bear, Of Montreal, Say Anything, Underoath, Copeland, etc etc etc.
Too bad they closed their UCF location...

my job back in new york was not sufficient enough to survive there, and as much as i hate to admit it...all my friends are HUGE bums and dont work so roomates wasnt much of an option..i see what youre saying but thats not exactly always the case. just because im 21 does not mean i make 1500+ a month lol.

Damn dude I can't imagine that situation. Meet new friends that aren't bums. Just go to shows, I always end up talking to cool new people at shows even though I'm not like looking for friends.

I just moved to Waterford Lakes. I really dont know the area at all, so no, I have no idea where to go..I need to get a license again down here because i had gotten a DUI back in NY, my license was revoked. Transportation is gonna be a bitch but i can figure all that out probly easily. Im literally half a mile from the waterford lakes shopping center which im sure you know is huge. I'll message you though. Thank you!

Yeah, I totally hear that. People down here are more approachable than in NY I find, but that doesnt mean it's gonna be easier for me. It's def. a huge change, its so weird lol.
I really appreciate all these responses though, I atleast have a general idea of where to start. Wish I had some people to show me around but obviously this isnt high school anymore where I could just meet people in class. I'll be getting a job soon, so that should help but that doesnt always happen overnight so it will take time.

Hahahahaha, trust me, I KNOW lol. I feel realllly creepy trying to utilize the internet to make connections, but I feel like these days its the best way to get anywhere if you are in my situation. Its okay, I figure its better to talk to people on AP.net than to try and find people on facebook who may or may not have the same interests as me. Atleast here I can see what people who like the things I like are doing around the area. Maybe? lol

I used to live back there. Lots of coffee shops, barnes & noble is always full of students hanging out and/or studying. You're just several miles away from lazy moon pizza and underground bluez. People are always there. Natura is nearby, too.

There are lots of bars you can go to around UCF. The Knightly Scoop, TDs and Knights Library are three of my favorites. Downtown is always fun too
really? ok, its nice to see some people from the area throwing recommendations out there. thanks a bunch, hopefully shit starts pulling itself together..if only i had a smoking partner now haha.

Yeah, I can definitely see that. I've been there a few times, but only for Tigers Spring Training games because I'm originally from Detroit, and I've never been terribly impressed. I'm right between Clearwater and St. Pete, and a bridge away from Tampa so there's always something to do around here, plus the beach is only 10 minutes away. Growing up in the shithole that is Detroit would probably make anything seem great, though.

hahah, yeah. I generally avoid tiger town during spring training. I like Tampa for what it's worth, although parts of it seem really trashy. I enjoy Clearwater immensely, though. It's very nice. Sarasota is a really nice place to be, but that's about twenty minutes to half an hour south of tampa.

I just moved to Orlando from Titusville, which is about 40 minutes away. I'm originally from Philadelphia, but since I was so little when we moved, I can't even pretend like I knew what it was like to live there.
There's a shitload of clubs and restaurants/bars in the area, but since I'm only 20, I'm not too into that. The Social is good for shows, and I'm seeing Fake Problems and Ninja Gun at Backbooth in August, which I've never been to before, but I've heard good things. There's an independent movie theatre in downtown Orlando by The Social that has a $4.75 matinee as well. Theatre is super clean, has huge oversized leather seats, and has spectacular screens and sound if you like going to movies.
Hit me up if you plan on going to any shows in the area. I actually met up with someone from the alternative press boards at an Against Me! show a couple months ago, and we've gone to a few shows at The Social since then.
