I was a cheerleader for 6 years and I was convinced that it's considered a sport. I would always get into debates with my friends Matt and Jeremy because they disagreed. I'm not too sure what my opinion is anymore. Would of you lovely people like to debate with each other to try and convince me?

i was a cheerleader for about 4 years or so as well, and i used to consider it a sport. now i'm looking from the outside in, i don't think that anymore. if more of the cheerleaders i know start acting less like sluts and more like athletes, i may change my mind.

I don't consider it a sport. However, it takes just as much time, practice, and dedication as sports do.

I don't think it is, but I don't care either so whatever.

Exactly. That's what really changed my mind. I realized how snobby the girls are to people and who hate everyone who isn't like them. Like, I know cheerleading takes a lot of skill and practice an stuff, but idk. I just don't feel the same anymore.

ha, most of the cheerleaders i know also have hardly any real "skill" and are constantly complaining about having to practice, so that's probably what dilutes the "seriousness" of it to me as well.

My high school cheerleaders go to competition. Even our youth cheerleaders do.

I'm sorry, I was referring to Elite cheer squads that are outside of HS "cheerleading".

I can't say anything for cheerleading, well the ones at my school are awful and pretty much a joke, but not sure about others. The dance team however, is a sport 100%. Did it for six years, sometimes doing excruciating 12 hour practices. I always thought the cheerleaders in Bring It On were pretty badass though.

I remember the first time I saw Bring It On. I was pretty young and it was at a friend's party. I remember seeing Brendan Fraser in one of the previews, and pretended to have a crush on him because all of the other girls at the party did and I didn't want them to make fun of me, haha.

How many movies/shows does Hayden play a cheerleader in?

comes out friday, and its a PG-13.

Maybe in the Unrated version if there is one. Netflix sent me the unrated version of Fired Up by mistake and there was a bit of boobs.

I just heard she drops her towel and there's some boobie action. I have yet to jump on the Netflix train.

Definitely not. It's in the name. They're merely the leaders of cheers. Sure, they are quite athletic... but still, can't see it being added to the Olympics anytime soon.

Cheerleading is for people who can't make it in gymnastics.

It's true. Cheerleading only has the tumbling aspect of gymnastics in it; however, the majority of tumbling done by cheerleaders is done poorly. Sure they can do this hard skill, but they're doing it with incredibly bad form. In gymnastics you will rarely see someone performing a skill with poor form because from the very beginning in the sport a person learns the importance of form (ie: pointing toes, straight arms and legs, staying tight). When a person is performing a skill with good form, they are much much more unlikely to get hurt. Also a gymnast will usually master a skill before moving onto a harder one that builds of the other. The problem with many cheerleaders tumbling is that they cannot perform the basics well to begin with, so they don't have a chance at performing the harder skills well.

Ya.

Anyways I was listening to some talk radio a while ago and they were talking about the rates of catastrophe injuries and deaths in cheerleading and it was ridiculously high compared to football, hockey, etc.

Pretty much just fans in miniskirts.

nah I was just mentioning that. IMO a sport is something athletic and competitive. Cheerleading is both

I do consider it a sport. Although i dont much care for it. But there's no way i couldnt consider it a sport. I had to watch as my sister came home from practice dead on her feet. I watched her out there, and she had a glowing sense of victory that any sport could produce. Yes, cheerleaders have become known for their b*tchiness. And slu*ty attitudes. Which is what diludes most people. But i would have to say it is a definate sport. :-d

Could say the same for construction workers coming home dead on their feet. A glowing sense of victory once a project is finished. And I hear they have a tendency to be slutty or bitches as well.

How do we define sport??
Competition: check
Athleticism: check
Endurance: check

Yeah high school cheerleading may be crap, but if you ever go to an actual competition and see the girls AND guys, you see the dedication it takes to coordinate a routine and do the stunts and lift the girls in the air and do the tumbles and sumersaults. It can be very hardcore when taken seriously.

It takes skill, but I don't think I'd call it a sport...cause I don't agree with the definition of sports that all it has to be is competitve.

Yes, i do agree with that BUT how did we he tfrom talking about the possibility of cheerleading as a sport to construction work when it isnt a sport?

It's more of a sport for the cheerleaders that have previously done a sport if that makes any sense.
They know what competition really is, and they bring their previous experience to cheerleading.
Cheerleading's not hard at all if you've got previous experience in other sports, so basically you only really
get into intense levels of cheerleading if you've done gymnastics, or some kind of previous tumbling.
For the girls who think putting your arms up in the air and having people lift you in a timely manner is
a sport, I disagree.

this. people die in machinery accidents, does that make working with machines a sport?
