Eyes Set to Kill - The World Outside
Release Date: June 2, 2009
Record Label: Breaksilence
In the midst of today's ever growing trend of extremely generic metalcore bands, most bands at least try to distinguish themselves in some way. Eyes Set To Kill unfortunately don't. The keyboards have been done before, along with the stereotypical female clean singer voice, which sounds like a more mature Hayley Williams with much less range. The simple and quiet drumbeats throughout are very disappointing. Considering that there's an ever-present amount of guitar riffage, it seems unfair that the drums do not match in any way. If it was used for the occasional breakdown, it would be much different, but it's not. Unfortunately, the talented guitarists are downplayed by the lackluster (and ever so hushed) bassist and drummer.
Also, the vocals are bland and boring. The vocalists seem to try to be average. Average music, average rhythms, average lyrics, average everything. It's sad really when they have potential to make an edgy, dark, catchy post-hardcore band.
The male screamer is a major downplay to the band's potential. His screams are butchered and forced, similar to the singing on Vanna's previous work. They're as hushed as can be and get drowned in the loud, powerful musical accompaniments. However, they are an improvement from their previous effort, Reach. They now even play side-by-side with Alexia's Paramore-esque style.
Another average, the lyrics are pedestrian at best. They're too relaxed and they're extremely amateur, with some emo-cliches thrown in to make them even worse. These cliches include nightmares, blood, insomnia, apocalypse, and grotesqueness.
It would be wise for them to stop opening their albums with some of their worst songs from the album. It's a downfall. “Heights” is a rehash of every other generic metalcore song. The first verse is full of screaming and guitar riffs, the latter of which seem to fade, leaving the song without substance. When Alexia sings their chorus, she stops the riffage and goes into noodly guitars that make the chorus all the more catchy. It's the highlight of the song.
“Deadly Weapons” gets lost in a haze. It lacks substance, and the metallic riffs overpower all else, and it seems the only highlight of the album will soon become tiresome. This song features an unfortunate guest vocal appearance from Craig Mabbitt of Escape the Fate fame (or shame). It seems that this album will have the lasting value of fruit-striped gum, and the predictability of the Cubs' chances of winning the World Series.
Then suddenly, for seemingly no reason at all, the third track is an interlude. The only reason I can come up with for this is that they're abandoning their old sound and trying to make a new one. It's darker, but it's not all that new. Instead of shouting out the new dark sound, maybe they should show it.
Because of how generic this album is, it has the lasting value of a Furby, cute and sweet at first, and then obnoxious and repetitive. Usually bands compensate from a lack of originality with smart, creative lyrics that people can relate to, energetic song structures, talented and technical musicianship and or quality singing/screaming. Unfortunately, Eyes Set To Kill's new album has none of this, and it's a damned shame. Please, quit while you're ahead. We'll at least have a few good songs to remember from you. Either that, or get Lindsey back. Because unfortunately, at this rate of decline, Eyes Set To Kill will never see the world outside... and unfortunately that world is full of good music.

hence the 34%. btw i love your username... sad that the bros. stopped making music, but i can understand why.
I think Heights was kinda cool, and then the album just falls from there.

i guess that's why they call it heights. honestly, i like his screams where he's somewhat talking and screaming, like at the end of heights where he screams/speaks i know you'll never learn.

Thank you for the compliment. I actually kind of like "Heights" it's just that it's ever so bland and boring with little substance, it's absolutely generic. But I don't believe that this album was a porgression from Reach at all. It's also just noty that good, and with such unoriginality, you have to do it better than everyone else. Especially if you say that you don't want to rehash anything that's ben done before on an internet review.

It's sad when a band has a talented vocalist and then they return with a horrible one (dance gavin dance for example.) I believe that the singer can often influence rhythms and melodies positively.

I couldn't tell you. I honestly think that he's a horrifying singer who would fit better in Hawthorne Heights than anything else. Wah weh wah... he turned a rocking post-hardcore band into emo. Emo's fine, but bad emo sucks... obviously.

BTF with Craig and ETF with Ronnie were guilty pleasures of mine, but now ETF and Craig are both just horrible.

Exactly. It never ceases to amaze me how that band is number 5 on the indie myspace charts. Number 2 on the rock indie tracks. They used to barely reach the top ten with Ronnie. His new band, Falling In Reverse (you may have to search for him under From Behind These Walls) is pretty cool.
EDIT: love the comment about lovin my avatar. ty.

He should have very little self-esteem with the work he has done. This World Is Ours and Deadly Weapons off this album are really just moot points.

Okay, his opinion doesn't change mine. I'm not influenced by his opinion one way or the other. Don't take my review as a way to bash this band when you've never heard a single song off this album. If you like the band, buy it. Ignore my review if you like them and like this album. I was just expressing my opinion, if hew sees this, he can express his too.

Reach was pretty good. But Lindsey Vogt (or however her last name is spelled) made the band. They're just mediocre now.

Good and fun review, I can tell you put effort into this. I'm usually not fond of trash-fest reviews, but this band has done nothing but consistently disappoint since the departure of their original vocalist.
I refer to this stuff as "Twilight-core."
Also, (if anyone else recalls) they were getting slammed on a thread here and the band themselves called to arms their legions of tweens to sign up and fight back on AP.
They can't possibily expect some credit or respect for a move like that. And the fact they cavort with the likes of Craig Mabbit only further discredits their vampire rock.

1.) I didn't put that much effort into this, sorry if that sounded douche-baggy, but hey, I'm honest. After aspiring to be an author for eight years, you learn how to write upfront. (Although it took two tries to get accepted.)
2.) Yah, Twilight sucks. I've always lived by the motto, "nothing like a good vampire story," and she ruined it. I absolutely pray not to become the next twilight if any of my work gets out. Although I probably won't because I'm a darker persona nd that reflects in everything I do.
3.) Twilight-core... hahahah! With all these -cores around here, I wouldn't be surprised if twilight-core was an actual genre. There's even crabcore.
4.) I'm a tween/teen person and I hate this band. So that would only result in hateful emails if I saw that. Also, who the hell decided Craig was a good vocalist? I mean, there are so many Craigs in the world of post-hardcore music, and they pick Mabbit. Eww...
5.) Done ranting.

ooo see I think DGD got remarkably better once they got rid of Johnny Craig. I may be a minority on that issue but the self titled and happiness are my JAM! I love the first CD, but something about "uneasy hearts weigh the most" is just music to my soul.

Johnny's voice was amazing. but when he left i believed the hushed screams, fast paced-ness and heaviness that was also catchiness left as well. Sadness.

I read the review and thought it was a good review, in your own opinion, however after reading your later posts, I believe you lost any credibility.
Ok first off the Craig bashing, your obviously biased there as you called Craig whiny, what the fuck is Ronnie Radke? Hes a less talented Sonny Moore, which is whiny.
I like escape the fate's old songs, which many people here and throughout hate. I live in vegas so i have been listening to them since they started. Ronnie Radke absolutely sucks live. Go listen to ANY video and he sucks. Craig mabbit is much much better live. Whether or not you "dislike" his voice, he sounds the same live as he does on record, and many people like his voice. Craig is also a much better screamer, their new album was just horrible though and I believe their next album will be much harder.
But then you said craig mabbit turned them emo..cmon thats just stupid. ETF had the same cliche lyrics and weren't any less emo with Ronnie Radke.
I looked at the bands you like and they are all the same generic scene bands every other teenager likes. I bet you love Silverstein, well hate to break it to you, but their music is very emo as well. I like all the bands you posted here, but if your gonna say one thing about one guy or band, it has to at least make sense.
You also said you do not like ESTK screaming, which when i first heard their songs off reach, I didn't like much either. But the guy is an absolute beast live. Seriously, don't listen to their videos, go and listen to them yourself. You can say you like or hate whatever singer and that she killed the band, but when you listen to them live you will barely here either of them singing, you will hear the screaming mostly.
Im not trying to talk shit to you, but you seem like an absolute Ronnie Radke groupie and your opinions on everything seem very biased. You said his new band is good, should i post clips of their songs with his vocals? They are fucking trash, im sure their final product will sound good, but those songs they have is garbage.
Also to clarify, their song "listen up" I am the person who released that song to the public, and they stole it and claimed it as their own song. I have proof, seriously NOBODY had ever heard that song before, until I put it up on youtube and myspace. youtube.com/iogpurge if you do not believe me
Ronnie made that shit a long time ago, Nobody really knows as to whether or not some members of ETF also did it, and nobody will ever know, Ronnie is a liar
