Definitely get The Orange Box. I don't have it but I'm gonna get it pretty soon, to play HL2 for the first time and for Team Fortress 2.

They've fixed Gears 2 up a lot now. Smoke grenades don't make you ragdoll, it just stuns you for a second, the amount of lagswitching (When a host botches his connection so everyone else lags/drops) has dropped considerably, you can't glitch out of maps with the boomshield anymore and two-piecing with the shotgun isn't as effective (But still completely rapes).

Of course chainsaws are still broken and the host has a ridiculous advantage, but the same goes for the original game.

You can't go wrong with the original gears. I refuse to switch to gears 2 until they have updated it to death and were left with it's control's being an exact replica to Gears1.
