Yeah tis a shame, without rubbing salt into the wound too much, The Maccabees are playing a gig next February and Bombay Bicycle Club are supporting. I'm going along for my 23rd, cannot wait.

Ah fuck, the thought of seeing either of those bands... just kills me. How big are both bands over there anyway? I never really know, considering they're completely unknown in America.

The Maccabees are rising pretty steadily now, they were bubbling under the surface for a while but literally in space of a few months they went fom playing a gig I went to in a venue that held maybe 800 people to headlining a London show with about 5000 people. Bombay Bicycle Club, not so much, still sort of there, but not huge, get some radio play and recognition but not a huge amount. However, I think it's the right amount for them at this stage, I think tif they had too much attention too soon it wouldn't help, next album is where it should really lift off and they can explore writing and performing a bit more.

Not sure if you can watch these, but if you can, they are videos from that London headline gig I told you about. I was at it and they have 13 songs from about a 25 song set list to watch. Amazingly shot, sounds as incredible as I remember it (the songs aren't in order of the set unfortunately but I'll post what they played in a sec):

http://www.babelgum.com/browser.php#grid/SEARCH,queryString:the%20maccabees, order:MOST_RELEVANT

edit: the full setlist was:
'No Kind Words'
'One Hand Holding'
'X-Ray'
'Tissue Shoulders'
'Can You Give It'
'Young Lions'
'Wall of Arms'
'Latchmere'
'Accordion Song'
'Precious Time'
'Dinosaurs'
'Kiss & Resolve'
'Toothpaste Kisses'
'Lego'
'Mary'
'Hearts That Strangle'
'William Powers'
'First Love'

Encore:
'Bag Of Bones'
'Seventeen Hands'
'Love You Better'

Thanks for the knowledge. It's just always interesting knowing where a band stand in their own country. Really wish either of them would explore the U.S., it'd be my dream.

The videos do work and I'll definitely be watching them. Looks amazing, once again.. very jealous.

You better keep me updated with both bands, it's tough actually knowing what's up considering they're not from here or anything. I also know no one that likes either, so!

Ha, of course I will! Pretty certain The Maccabees are heading that way next year at some point, probably before Summer, so I will let you know anything I find out. Off to see them twice in Jan/Feb so will be good. I'll be updating for sure.

Definitely keep me updated. And god, I can imagine how great Bombay is live. I've watched videos and have been pretty impressed.

my favorite Bombay song is definitely "What If", however "Evening/Morning" really made me love them, even from when they just had their EPs out at the time. How about you?

Well I actually found them on a TV show over here that was a competition to win the chance to open a UK festival. They won it but the show was pretty small, ended up loving them from hearing "The Hill" before they'd released any EPs. From The album though, big fan of "What If", "Lamplight", "Evening/Morning" and "The Giantess". I recorded a re-worked and acoustic version of "Dust On The Ground" a while ago.

The soundtracks for the movies are really good, probably the only good thing about them. New Moon had some great songs on it and hardly any huge artists.

Kyle Huntington
05/18/10, 04:52 AM
Oh yeah I know they are great, I got the New Moon one it's just these guys don't seem to have the 'status' a lot of the bands on the soundtracks do, I mean they released their album in the states only about a week ago and it went totally unnoticed etc. They aren't exactly huge over here either. Good for them though.

So do their EPs have completely different songs then what's on the full length? I'd imagine some would. Just wondering what I should have from this band, haha.

Kyle Huntington
05/18/10, 06:09 AM
Because I'm very bored and glad people are showing an interest:

The Boy I Used To Be EP:

1. The Hill
2. Sixteen
3. Open House
4. Cancel On Me

How We Are EP:

1. How Are You?
2. Ghost
3. Maybe More
4. Pedestal

It's a mixture basically, the versions on the EPs aren't as good as album versions of the songs but their singles contain a lot of incredible b-sides. Notably the songs; 'Curl Up Like A Dead Leaf And Go Where The Wind Blows", "Jewel" and "Motel Blues (Loudon Wainwright III cover)". It's a testament to them as songwriters that most of their debut album contains songs that they wrote when they were only 15/16 and they still sound awesome. There's a lot of songs not on the EPs or full length that I've posted in here too, including the ones I just mentioned. Highly recommend just having a sift through. This is one of my favourite unreleased songs by them:

Jack on a new record (not Flaws):

It will be an amplified affair again. Yeah, I think we've got about half of it ready to record.I think in terms of the first record, it's kinda where "Always Like This" left off, that was like the newest song on that album so that was the most up-to-date, and I think it's taking off where we left it. Not always just "verse/chorus/guitar riff", we did get worried that there wasn't actually a song with any buzz or distortion yet and what we were gonna do live.

There's an acoustic one coming out next month called Flaws, I posted the songs "Dust On The Ground", "Ivy & Gold" and "Flaws" from that a couple pages back too. And they are currently writing the new full band album of which they have a fair few songs for.

New song "Leaving Blues" for streaming along with an incredibly exciting and heartfelt short review of the album here: http://www.zanelowe.com/insider

Seriously, go listen now, it's beaut.

It's the restraint on this album that kills me. At this relatively early stage of any musicians career, the constant is a need to impress. To prove worth with an often overbearing ambition. No question Bombay Bicycle Club have the ability to show off, but they choose not to here choosing, instead, to settle in to the understated mood of this record. This is perfectly executed songwriting that is recorded with a sense of responsibility to each song and what it needs. A perfect record really. I have not stopped listening to it and know that I have another great companion for life.

Went and saw them touring this album last night, it was absolutely incredible. Tiny venue, all seated in an old chapel and basically right at the front of the stage whereever your seats were. The support came from Lucy Rose: www.myspace.com/lucyrosemusic (http://absolutepunk.net/www.myspace.com/lucyrosemusic) (who is the female singing on some of Flaws) and she was amazing, there was also a band called Melodica, Melody and Me: www.myspace.com/mmmelodic (http://absolutepunk.net/www.myspace.com/mmmelodic) who were a bit samey, but still alright.

Bombay Bicycle Club setlist was something like this, but possibly out of order:

Rinse Me Down
Many Ways
Evening/Morning (Bluegrass Version)
Dust On The Ground
Ivy & Gold
Leaving Blues
Motel Blues (Loudon Wainwright III cover)
Always Like This (Acoustic)
Jewel
Flaws
