OK, before I begin let it be known.
I like Simple Plan and don't give a flying f*** what anybody has to say about it.
That said, the show was awesome. All the acts gave a great performance, and the crowd seemed to enjoy it (though they were a little thin on Madcap). Moshing began during Gob's set and didn;t elt up til the very end of the show (tho nobody would let me have any fun...nobody would boost me up for some surfing).
Madcap, which began only 15 mins after the doors opened, had a steadily building crowd, but showcased a new guitarist, and played with all the energy they had the last time I saw them. Unfortunately some folks arrived late and missed them, and since many ONLY wanted to see them, they were miffed (and I don't blame them at all). Madcap rocked.
Gob was up next, and the energy got a lot higher. They played stuff off their old album, stuff off their new one and the crowd seemed to have a great time. The standard circle pit was turned into a giant L after a bit (I was watching from the bar most of the show). And while at times the bass could be heard easily over the guitars, I liked it on whole.
Diffuser pulled up third. They were the other band I went to see, and sounded a bit weird, their guitars weren't the same style as the other bands and seemed a bit out of place. But still, they played real well, even if the sound at times cut for Tomas (lead vocals). Sound was a big issue, for there were times the volume was too loud or it wasn't balanced (my ears are still ringing 3 hours later).
But it seemed everyone there wanted to see Simple Plan. The energy level just erupted then, and all sorts of folks were into it (lotsa old school punk guys, moshers, everyone) jumping around, slamming into each other and whatnot. And SP sounded pretty good live (way better than Sum 41 and not as annoying if you ask me). I felt an energy that I haven't felt in a while at the show, and this time did not get kicked in the unmentionables. They even covered American Jesus by Bad Religion, a song which kicks a lot of ass. While I was very skeptical about their performance going into the night, by nights end I had had one of the best times of my life (only behind the Ataris/Sugarcult/Autopilot off and Flogging Molly/Andrew WK/Allister/Lost City Angels), and even crwded around to get autographs with everyone else. (I got all of SP and Madcap, 3/4 of Diffuser and half of Gob)
I'd like to also add this:
Johnny, Lee and Jordan of Madcap are some of the nicest guys I've ever met (right up there with Tim of Allister and all of the Riddlin Kids) and Johnny especially helped me track down all of Madcap so I could get them to sign my cd.
Tom, Peter and Anthony of Diffuser are also on that list (they seemed a bit surprised that I told them I've been a fan since 2001, but I have)
So yeah, that's what I thought of the show. I liked it, was 15 well spent for 4 great bands and a great time.
