Brokencyde - The Broken!

Unbeknownst to most, Brokencyde weren't always the crunked up sex gods they are now. They used to be really whiny about past relationships that didn't work out. Brokencyde seems to have tried to erase their past record by no longer printing it, and it's really hard to blame them. Plenty of people have wanted the band to sing (or rap or whatever the hell you want to call what they do) about real issues they've gone through, instead of bragging about how fucking crazy they are. Unfortunately, the issues don't vary. Everything they rap about here is about being betrayed by an ex. This album is proof why this band should stay away from talking about their personal lives, girlfriends, and anything in general.

The lyrics are like a thirteen year old "emo" girl's livejournal entries. With fantastic imagery like "She intoxicates my inner thoughts with blades, knives, the ignitions hot. It's overcooling the things inside my conscious, and every time I scream I penetrate the audience," one can perfectly picture how much "Se7en" has gone through since his last break up. Every song basically has this same pattern. During the song "Lacuna," the lyrics switch up a tiny bit by going into the third person, which is pretty precious. While hearing the lyrics, it's hard to tell whether to laugh at how stupid their lives are, or to feel sorry for their mental state that would cause them to take being dumped so seriously.

The beats are pretty simplistic, and it seems as if they heard Linkin Park's Hybrid Theory and wanted to try to recreate some of the songs on Garageband. The music itself is the lesser evil of the entire album. It doesn't do anything new at all, but some of the beats are kind of catchy, which is one of the very few things that can help you to get through the album. There's way too much repetition however, as it's really hard to differentiate between tracks at times, since the subject matter and music is so simillar. They even recorded a version of one of the songs acoustically, which is as good as the idea of brokenCYDE doing an acoustic song sounds.

The vocals themselves are incredibly vexing, due to Se7en's lack of control and the obvious cheap equipment used. The production on the vocals basically sounds like a guy yelling into his laptop's built in microphone. It doesn't matter really what pitch the scream is, since it will make you want to drive pencils into your ears as far as possible, since he has no clue how not to sound like a house cat being choked. It can provide some comedy when Se7en tries to switch it up, such as the song "Disappearing Hearts," where at some points in the song, the band thought it was a great idea to add in an effect that makes his wretched screams sound like gargling. Unfortunately, for the most part, after the first track, it loses all humor it could have, and just becomes unbareable.

The clean vocals are just as dreadful. Throughout almost the entirety of the album, the clean singer, "Phat J," tries to take on an accent that sounds like he's almost stuttering. On the track "Taking Lyfe From Me" (since y's are so much more badass than i's), the clean vocals are harder to take seriously than the screaming. It's hard to tell whether even "Phat J" takes himself seriously on the track since it sounds like he's almost laughing.

After listening to this album, one has to wonder "What happened?" It's possible they've become self aware, which would be unfathomable due to how serious they take themselves now. Maybe they just drank for the first time and thought that that would be more fun to sing about that than getting dumped. It seems like they've always rapped about bitches; they used to hate their exes for being bitches, and now they get mad bitches and treat them with loads of respect. It's really hard to tell (or care) what happened, but it really wouldn't have made a difference in the quality of the music. Be it rapping about getting dumped, or getting crunk, Brokencyde are horrible either way.

A review isn't hilarious just because somebody calls a band "horrible." There is nothing remotely funny about this review, or the other review by a staff member that also hates on this band. "Hilarious" means "funny" and neither review is funny, unless you try really hard to think that it is. Random negative adjectives strung together doesn't make something funny. These reviews are simply well written, just leave it at that.

On the contraray, they only care about making money, getting drunk, and getting laid by 12-14 year old girls, who happen to make up the vast majority of their fanbase.

The fact that their newest release sold 6,000 copies in the first week shows what has happened to music. People just give into the latest fad, and don't give a shit about the quality. It shouldn't silence the critics at all, it gives them more reason to show how bad this band is, so more people get the message.

The thing is though, as much as they appall and upset me, I can't completely hate brokeNCYDE, as they blatantly display a modicum of self-awareness. Look at the album title. Or the promo shots. Surely, they can't take themselves seriously whilst posing like that, can they? There has to be a cynical Machiavellian mogul behind the band, eager to rape the wallets of stupid children everywhere.
In light of the fact that they're clearly designed to take advantage of dumb people, I'm willing to give brokeNCYDE's debut a mark of over 5. There's a clear contempt for the target audience here, and for once I commend that. Anything that makes idiots seem that much more dim-witted is automatically deserving of some kudos.
And if you don't like that, well... as brokeNCYDE' would probably say, "u cn suk mi fukkin dik. Bitch." (Sorry mother.)

If that's what got you through middle school you're some young, fucked up kid who needs therapy desperately. And no emo doesn't always suck. Okay? THere are good emo bands out there. Bands like MCR, Dashboard Confessional, and Hawthorne Heights are not what emo used to be. They are not Rites Of Spring by any means. They are more in the category of "shitty alt-rock-pop" bands.

You probably can't number 10 real emo bands. (No Rites :P) You would most likely utter blasphemy. Just because MTV (Manipulating Teen Views) decided that bands that used acoustic guitars, crummy and sad lyrics about every failed relationship they've been in, and the occasional useless hardcore growl is emo doesn't mean it is.

Also, this was by far the worst fifteenth post ever. You have no idea what good music is (Circle Takes The Square, TNTLLY, Saetia) is. Go on and listen to your shitty music that deserves to be hated on. The reason we cannot relate to this garbage is because A.) we don't promote underage drinking/drug abuse/statutory rape. B.) We were raised in a way that was to know the difference between right and wrong. C.) We don't use emo and preppy in the same sentence. BTW. "Hilarious" means "funny" and neither review is funny, unless you try really hard to think that it is. Random negative adjectives strung together doesn't make something funny.
