View Full Version : Which is a better rivalry, UNC-Duke or Yankees-Red Sox?

I think they're close, but because of the amount of fans involved in Yankees-Red Sox it is more intense.

I live in New York. There's a sport called college football? Nooooooooooooooo.
The Yankees, Red Sox, Duke and UNC all have fans all around the entire country and play to sell out crowds at every road game; as do OSU and Michigan football, but the fans are in the seats for the home team.

I've spent a decent amount of time in North Carolina, and there aren't a large number of Duke fans, atleast where I've been. Thats what hurts it in my opinion.

It's weird, I dislike baseball, love college b-ball, but this is a hard decision. I think by virtue of it being a pro game, the lead up to any Yankee vs Red Sox game is more interesting, at least trash talk wise...but I think UNC Duke is more interesting watch in the end.

I don't really like baseball, and I don't buy into pro sports as much. I absolutely adore college sports, the amount of desire, pride, etc. makes it completely different game. I went for Duke/UNC

Here's what I found interesting...the one thing that makes the Red Sox vs Yanks Rivalry interesting to me is the bidding war on players, and money spent, in part for the World Series, but also mainly to beat each other. Like, Damon becoming a Yank, the teams competing for Free Agents, it makes the off-season very interesting, and the games compelling, even though I don't watch baseball ever really.
But, nothing beats a final shot UNC vs Duke game, they always come off as the most intense games

here's the reason it's a no-brainer for me...
almost 2 years ago i was at a yankees game and a grown man threw a beer cup half full of chewing tobacco spit at a teenage girl wearing a red sox hat. the cup hit her in the face and the spit covered her face and shirt.

I'm sorry, I have to disagree. Spend the fall in the deep south...Auburn/Alabama, Auburn/UGA, UF/F. St., Miami/F. St., Alabama/LSU....I'm not even including the Big 12 in this. I am not at all saying that the Yanks/Sox rivalry doesn't rank. There is clearly a big time rivalry there, but to say that it is the biggest without question is going too far. In my experience...my Mom's aunt has not spoken to her since I was 3 or 4 after my Mom made a comment about Auburn beating Alabama. She refuses to speak to my Mom. They are not the only ones and I've read plenty reports of violence between Auburn and Alabama fans. Since I am an Auburn fan, I can reference that rivalry much better than I can many others. Auburn and Georgia began play in 1892 and have played 108 times since, which by college football standards is quite hefty (seventh all-time, which hell...that's not even the most, but there aren't multiple game series in college football to add to games played). I really think that there are a select number of major rivalries in sports and how you rank them comes down to your preference in sport and background. I don't want to turn this into some silly argument, but to say that the Yankees/Red Sox is the biggest/deepest rivalry is a bit much in my opinion. Sorry if you disagree.

College football has no legends? Do you even pay attention to college football? Sorry to continue referencing Auburn/Alabama but have you heard of Paul "Bear" Bryant? The former Alabama coach who led them to 6 National Championships. ESPN made a movie about his days at Texas A&M. I can go further into how he played into the rivalry and how he constantly added fuel to the rivalry by making tasteless comments about Auburn and how people have held onto the words exchanged between the schools at that time.
And Bo Jackson? Former Heisman winning Auburn running back who played both football and baseball professionally and whom many sports analysts consider to be the greatest athlete of all time but many didn't get to see it due to an unfortunate hip injury while he was with the Raiders.

Yes, yanks/sox is more widespread, but much of the discussion has been hatred and bitterness and blah blah blah. I'm not even saying college football is better, I'm only saying that this isn't a landslide by any means. Also, college football is big many places. I didn't even mention the Big 10 or PAC 10 since I wanted to focus on the south.

if the thread topic had been "which sport has the most (or best) rivalries?" i wouldn't even suggest baseball.

Did you now Munson went out of his way to drop 3rd strike calls just so he could throw the runner out and get an assist....see, Fisk was ahead of him by 3 assists. With Duke/UNC, other teams have taken away from this rivalry at times. It is still easily one of the best rivalries in sports, but the Yanks/Sox bad blood has never died and continues to grow. That also has a lot to do with the nature of college basketball though. Duke/UNC is one of the few rivalries that has pretty much been there year in and year out. However, at times, teams like NC state, wake, and maryland have taken away from this.
YANKS/SOX is definitely a more consistantly intense rivalry.

When Ohio Stadium opened in 1922, Michigan spoiled the party with a 22-0 victory. The rivalry was heated in the early days as both have been long-time college football powers. But it got even hotter in 1969, when Bo Schembechler took over as Michigan's coach and upset Woody Hayes' No. 1-ranked, undefeated Buckeyes. Four times in the next six years, both teams were ranked in the top five when they met. In 1970 and 1973, both were undefeated (they tied 10-10 in '73). From 1970 through 1975, Michigan entered without a loss every year. The Wolverines won just once. Ohio State was 9-0-1 in 1993, 11-0 in 1995 and 10-0 in 1996. The Buckeyes lost each time. That is rivalry.

Combined paid attendance over the last 10 seasons for Carolina-Duke games: 445,113.
Combined paid attendance for the last 10 national championship games: 427,395. (taken from unc's website)
It's State U. vs. elite institution. Colonial vs. gothic. Southern hospitality vs. Northern interlopers. Quintessential college town vs. isolated college campus. The expanse of the Dean Dome vs. the coziness of Cameron Indoor Stadium. Carolina's "wine-and-cheese crowd" vs. Duke's Cameron Crazies. Thirteen consecutive Sweet 16s vs. seven Final Fours in nine years. (cnnsi)
that is rivalry.
bingo! OSU - Michigan is sweet, but nothing in college sports compares to Duke/UNC. Both teams are just consistently amazing every year, there's such legendary players from both schools, and over the past 15 years there's no debate.

whens the last time someone from duke/unc fought each other on the field of play?
whens the last time the markee player on one of those teams threw down with a COACH on the other team?
whens the last time someone from duke/unc started a fight with some grounds crew?
you dudes are tripping balls if you think anything comes close to red sox/yankees.

i was responding to this little bit of idiocy: i can't believe the results of this poll. two cities a few hundred miles apart that play about 30 times a year in an extended season where not every game really matters
or
2 schools that define a single state, 8 miles apart in a college atmosphere that play once a year on each home court?
this isn't even a contest in my book. osu michigan has a solid claim, but the yankees/red sox are a joke in this poll.
i shouldve made that clearer, my fault.

when i made this thread and the poll i made it to compare the UNC-Duke rivalry and the Yankees-Red Sox rivalry. It was just for those two rivalries. A lot of the rivalries mentioned are all up there as great amazing rivalries.
In refrence to Caleb's post way earlier about the Giants-Dodgers rivalry not being that long. The fans hated each other when they were in New York, this continued in California to a less extent.
And with what Tate said about Barca-Real Madrid, IMO, thats the most intense rivalry in the world. Those fans wouldn't think twice about killing each other. For those who don't know Real Madrid has always been the government team (Franco created it), and Barcalona (city and club) has always been disrespected by people from Madrid because they are from the north of Spain and many are Basque (I think, not 100% positive).
Soccer rivalries will always be the most passionate, because of the violence

soccer shouldnt even factor in to the discussion because most soccer fans are legally insane. especially in italy where there are facist regimes rooting for teams and in south america where apparently people through lit flares at players on the field.

hahahaha
Last year there was a big thing about flares in stadiums in Italy, the goalkeeper of one of the teams got hit in the back with one. Cell phones are a huge problem too. You see people go out to kick a corner and they're are phones flying past them.
Soccer really is no where near as bloody as it used to be in the early 80's.

stupidest part about throwing the cellphones is that their SIM card is in it, so it's trackable. So everyone who throws their phone at a game gets caught for it.

I'm hoping my time at that will be next January at White Heart Lane, with Tottenham in the second round of the Champions League and a top of the Premiership with Chelsea and Arsenal in the relegation zone.
I can dream can't I?
