He's the only artist I enjoy in this genre. Unless you were going to throw The Postal Service in with that genre too, but I wouldn't. But yeah, I like the songs, they're catchy and make you feel happy. The lyrics usually make no sense at all though, if I didn't know anything about this dude I would say he's a total stoner. haha

I could ramble on and on and on and on about all the reasons you should listen to Owl City, but I'll just post a poem I made about Adam Young and his music instead...8-]
~~~~~
His G-rated music has a bubbly A+ rating
And anyone with ears should have no problems relating...
You can taste the emotions heard overhead
Of the airplanes above as you lay dreaming in your bead
Or perhaps down below beneath the ambient blue waves
Explore a brand new dimension in sub aquatic caves
You'll be in a techno world that's just one blink away
As you hover around the mist, you won't know what to say
Sit back, relax, and let the music fizzle and foam
Breathe in and breathe out as it transports you back home
You'll be bedazzled once you visit this place
This effervescent cloud will carry you up to outer space
Hoot-hoot hooray! Hail to thee!
Thine fluffy rainbow melodies of Owl City!
haha THANK you... It's horrifying. I just listened to it to see what all the fuss is about. Ouch. This song burns my ears off :/
The auto-tuned voice, allll the electronics... I'm good with synths sometimes, but it's like the song is depending too much on them and also drowning in the extremely (sickeningly?) happy lyrics. yipes... I can see how it could cheer people up, but it almost made me cry. Not in the good way
No, just that he has copied (really badly) other artists music.
Ah, I get it. You're getting at The Postal Service, I take it? In that case, you're just as original as Owl City's music.
And if you're not getting at TPS, you're still unoriginal, because nearly everyone and their mother has accused OC of ripping off someone. Let's face it though, pretty much everything has already been done in music already. It's hard not to rip off someone, regardless if it's intentional or not.
Melodramatic lyrics =/= lyrics about fireflies, hot air balloons, and the dentist's office.
TPS's lyrics are much different from OC's. Some/most would say better.
But, OC's synth tones are much different. They're so much warmer/cheerier. The only similarities I see are the fact that both acts are one man bands, and are based off of synthesizers and tap pads. And, let's face it, TPS wasn't the first one man band to use a synth, either.
I couldn't care if he is similar to other people but no talent (lyrics) isn't excusable for some cheery synth tones.
Kurt Retenauer
02/20/10, 12:24 PM
I couldn't care if he is similar to other people but no talent (lyrics) isn't excusable for some cheery synth tones.
But, the point is, the lyrics are appreciative to some. Just because you don't like it doesn't make it bad. Also, having less than superior lyrics does not make an artist bad, especially if they produce/write their own music. Not going to say Adam Young is a mastermind at what he does, but he isn't bad at it either. He makes catchy music, cheesy lyrics, and people eat it up. So, he's doing something right.
By making pop music? He can't help the fact he's enticed to make pop music. If that makes him a walking billboard, then so be it, but I don't see how liking cheery music that is catchy makes you a walking billboard. What exactly is he billboarding? Korg Synthesizers and MacBooks?
Disagree. "Dental Care" has the dumbest lyrics by far, but the song is kind of pleasant. "Umbrella Beach" however, legitimately sucks.
I like me some Owl City. I'm stoked for his recent success.
I will agree that there were definitely some skippable tracks on the last album, but I think that he makes some awesome songs. My current favorite is If My Heart Was a House.
I think I was mistaken about it being a special edition on sale. I ended up getting it at Wal-Mart because it was 10 cents cheaper lol. Sale price at Target = 11.98, regular price at Wal-Mart = 11.88
I almost got Sade - Love Deluxe too for 7 bucks, but I'm pretty sure I can get it online for like 25 cents.
I haven't shopped there in a while because I usually hit up Best Buy (for my Reward Zone points that my brother will probably steal anyways, lol) or FYE (for used CDs). Yeah I guess it's not popular, I dunno. I haven't seen it in quite some time. I should probably get a Best Buy rewards card, I probably could have even had a reward by now but I never get one. FYE's new CD prices are even worse than the average Christian bookstore's prices, and that's pretty bad. Sometimes I find a respectably priced new album, but not often.
I haven't tried selling my CDs there yet, but I feel like a lot of them aren't in good enough shape. I have a nasty habit of letting my cases get cracked and CDs (very playable but still a bit) scratched. One of these days, though, I should take a bunch there and see what happens. Ahh. If they look reasonably good they may still pass. My problem is they only buy certain kinds of stuff, a lot of mine are worthless to them. I wish they would take them for 0.01 like they ring up, but they won't. Haha, exactly. I've sold at the Bethel Park location and Monroeville. Bethel Park was kind of selective, but Monroeville bought everything. I'd say around 15-20 CD's, and 1 DVD for $40. Not bad at all. My CD's are for the most part in good condition, aside from a few I had when I was younger that I didn't treat well.
Hmm, I sold over a hundred CDs and nearly 50 DVDs and got a mere $75 for them. I figured they have a database for "buy-back" figures, but it seems its influenced by location and what's requested/wanted at that time.
Edit: Also, close to 50 books in that same lot.
Yeah, I think it has a lot to do with regional need. Bethel's store was huge, while Monroeville's store had opened months prior to when I sold them. I kind of wish they let me know how much I got for each item, because it seems as though they just add up amounts in their head and make a figurative guess when they know what they want to buy from you.
