I definitely agree, most tours have boring, shitty openers that make you want to stab yourself in the ear with a pencil, but on this tour, there's 3 bands on every date, all of which are awesome (I'm less familiar with Zech's Marquise, but what I've heard from them sounded good)...for those of you that haven't seen Rx Bandits live, you're in for a treat

it's co-headlining, both are supposed to play hour & a half sets at each show and they alternate who plays last

What's the best Dredg album to listen to? Never heard them before and I don't want to just sit there and nod my head when I see this show in August.

my favorite is "Catch Without Arms"....music nerds love "Leitmotif"...."El Cielo" is most people's favorite, and their new CD is pretty good too

lol, the ones that are more into the technical side of music, it's their least accesible CD and the people that like it the most are the musicians I know that are like "wow how can they play like that"

I went to the first show at HOB Anaheim. Missed Good Ol War. Caught the last 2 or so Dredg songs. Not really a fan. Definitely an RXB crowd, which is expected in their hometown. Go see this show. It's awesome. They've gotten so good live lately. love it.

I can't think of how to word it, but ask why Sheets left/got kicked out etc, but word it in a less offensive way

Didn't he leave/get kicked out because of his alcohol/drug abuse? I thought I remember reading on their old forum something about how he needed to go to rehab and get things straightened out.

Either way, maybe ask whether or not it was a mutual decision to have him leave?

Another possible question -- can they give us an update on the DVD they're planning on putting out this fall? What's tentatively planned to be included on it?

What ever happened to the bootlegs they planned on having fans record on their tour from last summer/fall? Do they plan on releasing a live album at some point (outside of the Bonaroo recording)?

I think I jinxed them, they used to play "Sell You Beautiful" everytime I saw them, up until last August, when I took my younger brother with me to see them and he asked me if they would play that song...and I kind of promised him that they would...and then they didn't play it, and I haven't seen it in any of their setlists since then either

I hope they start adding "White Lies" before I see them on Aug 7th that's tied with "It's Only Another Parsec..." for my favorite new song, as far as old songs go, I'd like to see "Republic", "Prophetic", "Epoxi-Lips", "Crushing Destroyer", "Status", "Anyone But You", and/or "What If" added of those songs I've only ever seen them play "Crushing Destroyer" live and that was on their tour last summer

I concur, great job.

So jealous you got to sit down and chat with them. I've been listening to them since the Progress days as well.

I'm more stoked now than ever about the DVD they're putting together. 5+ hours of material??? Amazing.

Also excited about the live stuff they have been and are planning to continue recording. Glad to hear they plan on putting something together in the future.

Man I know what you mean. I started a couple years ago after Minus The Bear released "Planet Of Ice" and haven't stopped since. I've racked up just under 100 in that amount of time.

It's definitely worth the money though. Much nicer having a larger copy of the album artwork. Not to mention the sound quality is superb (with the right equipment).

Going to the show tonight in Des Moines. I've been waiting 7 long years to see RxB. More on the show later/tomorrow.

CarpeDiem8711
08/13/09, 05:28 PM
Date: August 8, 2009
City: Des Moines, IA
Venue: People's Court
Bands: Dredg, Rx Bandits w/ As Tall As Lions

As Tall As Lions opened the show with an 7-8 song setlist. Their live performance was every bit as good as I had hoped. Lush harmonies, deafening drums and bass, and soaring choruses that could fill arenas. While I could see this band going on to bigger, better things, I couldn't help but think of how great they would be in a small jazz club. There's just something about their sound I guess.

They went on at 7:30 and ended at 8:10. I couldn't tell you all the exact songs they played (just got into them recently), but I'm guessing it was similar to what was already posted. I know they started with "Circles" and did a dub version of one of their songs.

Based off the previous setlist posted, this should be close to correct:

1. Circles (100% sure they opened with this)
2. Breakers (this was played, but can't remember order)
3. Ghost of York (this was played, but can't remember order)
4. Go Easy (See the Love) (can't remember if this was played or not)
5. Stab City (this was played, but can't remember order)
6. A Break, A Pause (this was played, but can't remember order)
7. In Case of Rapture (this was played, but can't remember order)

Rx was up next. Words can't describe how excited I was to finally see these guys in person. In all honesty I was beginning to think I might never get the chance to see them live.

[Sidenote: I've been a fan since 2002 during the Progress days and the only chance I had to see them was at Warped Tour '02 (the Drive-Thru stage). Being a foolish 15 year old kid I decided to watch New Found Glory play instead that day thinking Rx would be back again soon. Wrong. Of the two times they booked shows in Omaha after that (once in '04 at the now defunct Ranch Bowl and again in '08 at The Waiting Room) they had to cancel both. Why it's taken me so long to decide to travel to see them is beyond me. Completely inexcusable.]

Expectations were high to say the least, but those damn bandits delivered. They busted out a blistering hour+ long set stacked to the brim with jamming. You could not wipe the grin off my face even if you tried. To make things even better there was no crowd surfing or moshing and Matt was smiling and looking over towards my brother and I as we were singing along for a good portion of the show. This can be attributed to the fact most people were there to see Dredg. If none of them were converted fans that night I don't know what it would take.

They went on at 8:40 and ended around 9:50.

Anyway, here's the set:

1. drum jam intro-->In Her Drawer
2. My Lonesome Only Friend
3. Decrescendo
4. Dinna Dawg -->March of the Caterpillar (1st verse & chorus)-->end of Dinna Dawg
5. It's Only Another Parsec...
6. Consequential Apathy
7. Mientras La Veo Soņar
8. Apparition (dub style)
9. To Our Unborn Daughters
10. Bring Our Children Home
11. drum jam outro-->Only for the Night (w/Marcel Rodriguez Lopez of Zechs Marquise on drums)

The shredding and jamming that took place was at all time ridiculous levels. The last 3 songs alone clocked in at nearly 30 minutes of the set. During "Bring Our Children Home" Matt and Choi were seemingly battling each other to see who could play the most outrageous solo. Matt was even blindfolded at one point.

I will back up the comment that C-Gak is one of the most underrated drummers around. As others have mentioned he didn't seem to take any breaks between songs and just continued pounding away, especially during the intro and outro jams. The backup vocals provided by Choi and Joe are spot on. Even better than Balling or Sheets in my opinion.

All in all a tremendous offering by one of the best bands around today. Do yourself a favor and check these guys out if they're coming anywhere near you. You won't regret it.

After the show I was fortunate enough to catch up with Matt at the bar, shake his hand and let him how much his music means to me. He truly is a wonderful human being and is every bit as genuine as the lyrics and music he writes.

My brother and I left only a couple songs into Dredg. Just wasn't feeling the vibe of them nor the fans there to see them. Maybe in a different setting I'd enjoy them more, but we were tired and ready to make our way home.
