For better or for worse, it is not uncommon that many well-known bands exploded off their sophomore album. So help me compile a list of forgotten debuts.
I'll start:
Thursday - Waiting
Fall Out Boy - Evening Out With Your Giirlfriend
Lifetime - Background
A Wilhelm Scream - Benefits Of Thinking Out Loud (and all the Smackin Isaiah releases)
The Bled - His First Crush
and a shit ton more I am forgetting.

When it comes to mainstream recognition, Tell All Your Friends. And I guess Flyswatter/Buddha/Cheshire Cat by blink, whichever you want to consider their debut.

Have you ever heard someone refer to Full Collapse as Thursday's first album?

I don't know if TAYF is forgotten at all, but good call on Blink.

the first Underoath album is pretty damn forgotten. i don't even remember what it's called.

FOB's Evening Out With Your GF is only forgotten - or rather unknown - by the kids who only listened to them after hearing This Ain't A Scene.
To the quote unquote "real" FOB fans (I cringed whilst typing that) it's still a completely relevant album.

I disagree completely. I know people who have listened to them since Take This To Your Grave and know nothing about Evening or their split with Project Rocket.
Bright Eyes - Letting off the Happiness/Collection of Songs/Water/whatever was pre-Fevers and Mirrors.

Acrobactic Tenement isn't forgotten at all, and was probably ATD-I's best album. Same deal with Underoath, everything pre They're Only Chasing Safety is actually quite good.

Thought nobody else talked about Acrobatic Tenement when it came to At the Drive-In. Old Underoath is good, but it seems most pay attention to TOCS and after and have forgotten about the other albums.

You pretty much listed all the ones I was going to Jim, ha. I'l add When The Battery Dies by Smoke Or Fire to the list as well. Then again that was when they were called Jericho so I guess that doesn't help much with it being "forgotten". I think Remission by Mastodon might qualify as a "forgotten debut" as well, as would the Goo Goo Dolls' self-titled.
Then again I'm not so sure that Remission is all that forgotten. Seems like a lot of people I talk to who like Mastodon don't know about it though, and are just familiar with Leviathan and everything after.

Technically not their debut.
Technically not their debut.
You are very right sir. I guess I would, if pressed, say Still Standing was their debut since that was the first CD with Ryan on vocals but if we're talking about Midget Tossing then yeah, I was way off.

1. That was completely unnecessary since you used quotes right after.
2. As a fan since TTTYG, it's still a sucky album.

Yeah, there were lots of stuff released before Fevers and Mirrors, but i think the controversy there is music critics being skeptical of really judging it as a real solid first release. Most of it is worse than basement production, and is mostly likely viewed like we would view a kid's collection of youtube covers sold from him blog. Can be taken seriously as a real first release? I think (and may absolutely be wrong) that's why Fevers and Mirrors is considered the first, since it was through a legit studio and was seen as legitimate. Those other releases may have just be re-packaged and sold later through a label.
Although, contradictory to what i just said, i think a read somewhere that music critics did take a listen to A Collection of Songs and just found it laughable.
Animal Collective- Spirit They're Gone, Spirit They've Vanished, and pretty everything else before Sung Tongs.
And a new generation of listeners (including myself) only listen to Merriweather Post Pavillion and jumped on the bandwagon then, so even albums like Strawberry Jam are overlooked.

Anything Refused released before The Shape Of Punk To Come
Brokenhill
07/13/09, 11:37 AM
Pink Floyd - 'The Piper at the Gates of Dawn'
Sigur Ros - 'Von' (Somewhat)
The Fall Of Troy - S/T
Wasn't it like a demo cd of Doppelganger? Does it really count?

I definitely think Letting off the Happiness is his debut, I could see how someone could disagree and say Water was his first because it was released in a physical format. Letting off the Happiness was recorded with at least an 8-track, all the songs were written together, a concise track listing was formed, instead of just a compilation of demos.
I think this whole thread is sort of vague, just saying.

It is vague, and that is lame, but i think you could definitely make a strong argument for Letting Off the Happiness being Bright Eye's real debut. It's a step above A Collection of Songs for sure.

Said before but, ATL: The Party Scene
blink-182: Buddha
The Ataris - Anywhere but Here
I don't know if this really counts, but I would say Cobra's first album. It was really solid and way better than any of their newer stuff. But people forget about it now since Gabe's been all weird lately.

I'd prefer to look at it as a real debut. It's my favorite album from Bright Eyes I think.
