View Full Version : How do you express extreme surprise through text?!

Here's round 4 of my super random question polls that I think some people on here enjoy.

I was texting a friend, when she told me her boyfriend broke up with her out of nowhere. I was in disbelief, which led me to say something like this: "Are you serious?!" That made me realize something. While I use it like this: ?!, it can also be used like this: !?. I know a lot of you won't have any idea what I'm talking about, but I know a lot of you will.

Well defiently ! first becuase your extremely surprised, then you add ? becuase your also confused and you question your excitement.

If I'm going to be surprised at something, that would normally mean it's something important, which I would hope means the person would call me, not text me.

I usually type the exclamation mark first, followed by the question mark.

Or you put the ? first for confusion and then the ! amplifies said confusion.

True, but normally I'm never that confused...

?!

the question i'm asking is foremost, the fact that i'm excited about my question is a secondary factor.

If it's good news, I put the exclamtion first. If it's bad news, I would put the question mark. I don't know if I actually do that, but I've had time to think about the question and that's what I came up with. :-)

Agreed. Pretty much was going to say the same thing. I've never seen a case where !? is accurate.

See, that's my point. It's never !?. The name "Isn't This Supposed To Be Fun" is a question. So why in God's name would you follow it with an exclamation point first? lol

I know that ?! is correct though now that I think about it.
