The Arctic Monkeys (http://www.arcticmonkeys.com/) debuted on the US charts this week at #24 by selling 34,000 copies. That makes Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not the second fastest selling indie debut album ever in American chart history.
Urban Outfitters is selling this album in buckets. I feel so trendy for loving it ...
This is such a great album.. What is the #1 selling independent album?

Arctic Monkeys be no good.
They are good, but I don't understand how they sell so well. They aren't amazing or anything, and they're not even that catchy.
But good for them.
popularity breeds popularity.
they're good and fine and it's a good album but this is a little much.

I blame Harry Potter.
HARRY POTTER star Daniel Radcliffe says he was the Arctic Monkeys' first fan.
The actor is boasting that he has been talking about the Sheffield sensations for months - before anyone else had heard of them.
The 16-year-old said: "Everybody is jumping on the Arctic Monkeys bandwagon but I was the first to rave about them.
"I saw them at the Reading Festival last year and whenever somebody asked me in an interview who my favourite band was, I always said the Arctics. Everyone said: 'Oh you're so cool, who are they?' No one had seemed to have heard of them.
Now everyone is claiming they knew all along. All my friends are saying, 'We've got the album' and they are pretending to be cool but this wasn't the story six months ago."

That Harry Potter kid comes off really pretentious about music.
I watched an episode of TRL and he plugged CYHSY!

I just don't fucking understand their success at all. Can anyone actually hear them? Go into any british pub's local night and you will hear 5 other bands of this calibre, if not better. It just doesn't make any sense that they've become so big. It's scary that a band this poor can become so big. Something is seriously wrong.

No, quite the opposite. British people have better taste in music. Instead of gobbling up G-Unit CDs, they are listening to a band like this. "indie" rock has caught on big time, and I can't believe people are bitching about it.

we are scientists are better.
Even though i found out about these guys through my brother before hearing it on the net or t.v, the reviews for these guys are very positive, it does not surprise me at all that they are selling so well. I was hooked after the first listen and they are the best band in their genre, that ive heard as of late. And if you can sell the most albums in one week upon release in the UK, thats very impressive, because i believe the UK have a rich history of amazing rocks bands and the people are educated on the best artists and music of all time.

We Are Scientists are indeed the shite, but i dont know about being better. Both bands are equally neat. But "I Bet You Look good On the Dance Floor" is the happy song of the minute. Either that or She Want Revenge's "Broken Promises For Broken Hearts"...

You wanna talk about a band who's overhyped... say what you will about them, but when publications begin placing them as one of the best bands of the UK ever? C'mon.
Honestly, they don't sound any different than the load of similar bands I heard and lost interest in last year.

These guys are really blowing up and I dont really get the hype either. Tickets for their show here in seattle are going for $150 a pair on ebay for tickets that have a face value of $10.

The UK is responsible for many great bands, there is no doubt about that but the truth of the matter is they love to over hype mediocre bands. the arctic monkeys happen to be one such band.

I really liked the album. I got it as soon as it came out in the states. It ended up being alot better than I expected it to be. It definatly not as great as Oasis' Definatly Maybe since thats the album they're comparing it to but It is a really good album.
We Are Scientists are just as good though.
