The Sports & Politics thread got me thinking. The MLB CBA, which expires after 06 (I think), allows MLB to contract two teams. Contraction has been a topic of discussion lately and a few teams have been thrown around. Gammons says:

One National League owner is telling employees that MLB has a plan to contract four teams, with a contraction draft already drafted.
but the CBA as of now only allows for two teams to be contracted.

Article XV-H. Future Contraction
The Office of the Commissioner and/or the Clubs shall not undertake
any centralized effort to reduce the number of Major League Clubs
effective for a season covered by this Agreement. The Clubs shall,
however, have the right, subject to the terms and conditions set forth in
this Article XV(H), to reduce by as many as two (2) the number of
Major League Clubs effective for the 2007 championship season.

however, MLB could certainly negotiate four teams for the next CBA. So far, there has been a few teams thrown around such as the Twins, A's, Marlins, Nationals, D-rays, and Royals, but the actual chance of a team being let go seems slim to me. Unless MLB can make more money by having a smaller amount of teams, I don’t see this having any chance.

regardless, what do you guy think? I think contracting the A's would be a very bad idea. That organization constantly produces talent and competes with large market teams. If they want them out of Oakland, move them to another city in the West, but don’t take them out of the equation.

lets discuss this and any other sports. A hot topic would be the NFL and the NFLPA, revenue sharing, salary cap, and so on.

I took sports economics last semester, so if anyone has random questions I might be able to help out. I have no idea what is going to happen with this because MLB has one of the craziest labor histories ever. Their anti-trust exemption basically throws common sense occurrences out the window.

The A's won't go because of the backlash MLB would recieve. The Marlins look like the most obvious choice (if they abandon relocation), with Kansas City and Minnesota next. I think Tampa Bay is safe under new ownership ..but who knows. I'd like to see two teams get contracted and have the leagues go back to an even amount w/ 14 each.

There is no way there will be contraction, the backlash from the public and the onslaught of lawsuits will never let it happen
