View Full Version : Who Was Most Responsible For the Explosion of Pop-Punk During the 90s?

When I saw the Green Day vs. Blink thread, it got me thinking about this. The 90s was such a great decade for music, and around 95 was when pop punk really got big. Which band do you think was most influential during that era?
My personal opinion: Pop-punk lives and dies with Green Day. Everything the band has written is amazing, and Dookie and American Idiot are some of the best albums I've ever heard.
The Offspring is a close second for me. But post what you think and why. I'm interested to hear what everyone has to say.

i know blink and green day had huge influences but offspring were making music before both and influenced way more people at the time, and who knows maybe blink or greenday borrowed from offspring

Green Day. Without them blowing up in the early 90s, Blink never would have gotten signed to a major label and been given the chance to get as big as they are. Green Day's fame precedes Blink's by a few years, with their breakout and massive mainstream success coming in '94 with Dookie, and Blink not even getting any attention until around '97 when Dammit became a big hit. The Offspring and Rancid both preceded Blink, too. The Offspring charted the highest indie record sale with Smash clear back in '94, and Rancid became at least momentarily huge in '95.
Love Blink all you want, and I won't deny their influence, but no radio station, label, or MTV show would have given them a chance if Green Day, The Offspring, and Rancid hadn't brought pop punk to the masses and made it palatable to the mainstream first.

i agree with this, BUT:
without nirvana blowing up none of this happens, and we'd still be listening to glam/ hair metal, and i'd probably have cobained my own ass.
if this is the most influential bands of the 90's, you are sorely fucked up for leaving off 1.)nirvana 2.) weezer 3.)radiohead. however, if this is meant for the pop punk genre only, then it is understandable.

Oh certainly. Green Day only got attention because the labels were desperate for a Nirvana replacement. But the poll was just supposed to be about the most influential pop punk group, hence my choosing Green Day.

i'm a bit confused about this poll. Pop-punk explosion of the mid-90s? how in the hell is blink winning this poll...enema of the state didnt come out until 1999!...haha the decade was freakin' over. And I dont wanna hear any crap about Dude Ranch because everyone and their dog knows that they were still in obscure-land when that album came out.....
Also, which pop punk are we talking here? I mean i'd say Bad Religion, NOFX really helped to bring back the pop-punk into the sub-mainstream. These bands helped spark a plethora of pop punk bands that range from Goldfinger-Rancid-MXPX-Blink-NFG-Reel Big fish-mighty bosstones etc.
Or, are we talking the radio-POP PUNK explosion of 1999-2004 (NFG, Blink, Yellowcard, Homegrown, Allister, Good Charlotte, Sum 41)? Then we can start to talk about blink.

I love Green Day and I am not going against the fact that Dookie help launch a more punk sound in mainstream music, but their follow-ups (Nimrod and Insomniac, which I say is their best album, controversial I know) were more alternative and abrasive in the case of Insomniac and kind of a ska-infused sound in Nimrod and didn't carry that pop-punk sound as much as it was in Dookie. You can't say Rancid because there are a lot of people don't even know about them even today. Goldfinger is classified as ska-punk band back in the day, Bad Religion, which influenced a lot of these bands listed, had a big charter but didn't make much of a dent in hitting mainstream audiences since a lot of people don't know them, like Rancid. Less Than Jake, pshh! The Offspring and Blink-182 I would have to say brought the most responsibility of the pop punk music throughout the 90's into today. With Dookie out, The Offspring hit the scene with Come Out and Play and made Smash one of the most succesful indie albums of all-time, if not the most successful. With Blink, it was a different case. You had it the pop-punk sound established when Cheshire Cat hit the scene, which was a good album, but with more skate punk. When Dude Ranch came out, pop-punk was starting to mellow out and when "Dammit" hit radio waves, it brought the attention they needed when they went into the studio to record Enema of the State, which infused that pop-punk sound a lot people love in blink-182, including myself and made that record their most successful ever (to date). In conclusion to along and kind of drawn out post, The Offspring blew it up and Blink-182 was the band that told everyone this sound is here to stay.

Some really random choices on here. I understand Rancid/Blink/Green Day. I don't like Nirvana, but they should probably be thrown in there. Possibly Ace of Base, too.
The Offspring is very reasonable too.
even more edited, sorry read pop-punk explosion part after voting/commenting. That being said throw out nirvana and I suppose Ace of Base. I'd say NFG, Sum 41, and Good Charlotte probably deserve more credit for the "explosion" than LTJ, Bad Religion, or Goldfinger.

The blink 182 ultimate craze began late 90s/early 00s. Green Day had such a profound influence on alternative rock, much more than blink 182. Despite what people say about Green Day's new style, in my opinion they are in the ranks of the Beatles, Rollingstones, the Doors, and led zepplin in rock history. Still love blink though.
PS
Yes, I know I'm going to get backlash for saying this

Nirvana is far and beyond the most influential band of the 90's. Just because they didn't have a strong influence in pop-punk, doesn't take away their contribution to alternative rock music as a whole.
I'd have to go with Green Day on this one. And if there was an "Other" option, I'd say Weezer. The Blue Album came out in '94 as well and really blew up.

Yeah I was reading an Alternative Press mag with blink on the cover and they had this feature where they had artists write an essay about their favorite band on how they influenced them to where they got today and the guitarist from AFI listed Jawbreaker. I was so shocked because I thought AFI is more of goth rock/ goth punk band, in my opinion.

i think Green Day was more of an influence in the 90's then blink. blink is probably a bigger influence in the 2000's, but thats not what the question asks.

i'm a bit confused about this poll.
Then we can start to talk about blink.
thats because a lot of people on this site dont know what theyre talking about, especially when it comes to 90's music, or any music from any decade before then.

Blink is without a doubt the most influential band of the 90s.
ANY upcoming pop-rock band envies was blink currently has.
youre 15...you were born in like 94, how would you know that blink was the most influential of the 90's? you were born when dookie by green day came out. blink didnt get really popular until the late, late 90's, early 2000's.

So what if he is 15? He can easily go back and listen to the albums that were released before he was born. And why try to change his opinion if blink is more influential because chances are all the arguments you going to say aren't even going to change his mind.

yes, but how does listening to an album determine how influential it was? listening to an album just gives his own opinion on how he likes it. Green Day was clearlyyy more influential then Blink DURING THE 90's, i dont even know how this is debatable. People really need to jump off the Blink bandwagon

Hull originally took us off the topic of pop punk by saying Blink was the most influnecial band of the 90's, above bands like Nirvana. I was simply responding to that.

How does listening to an abum determine how influential it was? Wow, you are a bonehead. I think by listening to an album that you haven't heard before, you can be all over a song that was on the album and if you play an instrument, you want to try to play that song.

to a point, yes. but it helps when you know something about music history and the bands that came before them and after them to really determine how "influential" an album is. its like knowing nothing about the beatles, and people saying that there albums are garbage...yet they have no idea how influential their albums were because they were the first to start the genre and break out. it takes more then just listening to an album, bonehead.

Yeah, you can read that on the internet. It's not that hard to look at how an album's influence is. If you go to youtube, you see people doing covers of bands they like. If you go to wikipedia, it has a bunch of music-related topics and history of bands, which can be found on youtube as well and probably a bunch of other things too. Just because you are born halfway into a decade, doesn't mean you don't know the music before you were born. It's all a matter if you using your time and looking things up and seeing what influenced bands to become one themselves. And I know that it takes more than listening to an album, I gave a good reason at an influence of albums, you didn't. Great original comeback, too.

u can look at this shit in 2 ways
Dookie by Green Day and Smash by the Offspring brought pop punk into the mainstream which thn brought attention to Rancid NOFX etc and they got big
however to me punk music would have never sounded like that if it werent for bad religion as they were doin the driving skate punk wit harmonies and every punk band of that era has sited bad religion as a main influence so im goin wit bad religion
people who are voting blink r stupid
like i love me some pre enema and untitled blink 182 but they did not revolutionize the genre

This.

I'd say Green Day if we're talking about the entire 90's. Blink didn't really get their biggest until the new millennium.
Also, I found it odd that you made this poll when you were barely alive in the decade. Just saying.

There a three appropriate responses to this poll. Green Day, The Offspring & Rancid, I think that Green Day is the best choice, but that all three are appropitate. Blink came after those three and Bad Religion was never truly in the mainstream. LTJ & Goldfinger were more Ska at first both came around the same time as Blink.

just because they are immature is irrelevant. and we're talking aboutinfluentiality, and the bottom line is that I don't believe that any up-and-coming pop-rock bands are not influenced by blink 182.
and yes, nevermind is a boring album with exception to the 3-4 hits.
1. Influentiality is not a word. You mean influence.
2. Maturity of a band has a lot to do with influence. If a band acts a certain way, its predecessors are probably going to act that way as well. You can't disagree with how Blink's attitude shows up in thousands of bands today.
3. Not all up-and-coming pop-rock bands are influenced by Blink, and not Blink alone. As evidenced by this poll, the 90s had legions of pop-punk bands to seed from and to say that every pop-punk band today is influenced by Blink 182 is biased and not necessarily true because they were not the only band of that genre that existed at that time, and certainly not the first.
they are the only ones I actually enjoy.
we obviously just have a difference in opinions.
let it be.
the guy was not even talking shit. stop trying to sound cool.

It's okay to like Enema more than Dookie but to say it is better is entirely wrong.

Dookie hands down had more influence in the 90s than any other band/album. Blink wasn't influential until the 2000s. And whoever is saying Blink has more influence than Nirvana is fucking high.

Sadly.
