Oh please! California by a longshot. Lets see here.... it's got In N' Out, Amoeba Records, excellent snowboarding, surfing, wakeboarding(all within 70 miles), good shows, Coachella, Buddyhead, weekend trips to Mexico, the governator, and beautiful weather. The Beach Boys got it right with "they wish they all could be California girls". I mean, Jersey has it's perks, but I declare CA the winner.

You know you're from Jersey when:
You don't think of fruit when people mention "The Oranges."
You know that it's called Great Adventure, not Six Flags.
A good, quick breakfast is a hard roll with butter.
You've known the way to Seaside Heights since you were seven.
You've eaten at a diner, when you were stoned or drunk, at 3 A.M.
You know that the state isn't one big oil refinery.
At least three people in your family still love Bruce Springsteen, and you know
the town Jon Bon Jovi is from.
You know what a "jug handle" is.
You know that WaWa is a convenience store.
You know that the state isn't all farmland.
You know that there are no "beaches" in New Jersey--there's the shore--and you
don't go "to the shore," you go "down the shore." And when you are there, you're
not "at the shore"; you are "down the shore."
You know how to properly negotiate a circle.
You knew that the last sentence had to do with driving.
You know that this is the only "New" state that doesn't require "New" to
identify it...... (try . . . Mexico . . York .! .
Hampshire-- doesn't work, does it?).
You know that a "White Castle" is the name of BOTH a fast food chain AND a fast
food sandwich.
You consider putting mayo on a corned beef sandwich a sacrilege You don't think
"What exit?" is very funny.
You know that people from the 609 area code are "a little different."
Yes they are!
You know that no respectable New Jerseyan goes to Princeton--that's for
out-of-staters.
The Jets-Giants game has started fights at your school or local bar
You live within 20 minutes of at least three different malls.
You refer to all highways and interstates by their numbers.
Every year you have at least one kid in your class named Tony.
You know the location of every clip shown in the Sopranos opening credits.
You've gotten on the wrong highway trying to get out of the mall.
You know that people from North Jersey go to Seaside Heights, and people from
Central Jersey go to Belmar, and people from South Jersey go to Wildwood. It can
be no other way.
You weren't raised in New Jersey--you were raised in either North Jersey,
Central Jersey or South Jersey.
You don't consider Newark or Camden to actually be part of the state.
You remember the stores E.J.Korvette's, Two Guys From Harrison, Rickel's,
Channel, Bamberger's and Orbach's.
You also remember Palisades Amusement Park.
You've had a boardwalk cheese steak and vinegar fries.
You start planning for Memorial Day weekend in February.
And finally . . .
You've NEVER, EVER pumped your own gas.

ok im gonna make this easy...
new jersey: three of the top ten richest counties in the country. second highest gdp per capita. some of the top beaches on the east coast. some of the best bands around now and from the past. has the devils, nets, giants, and jets who are all contenders this year. oh and we have diners and good pizza
california: hot girls and stoners. nice beaches. shit tons of shitty pop punk bands and some damn good bands as well. but not a lot that will make a huge impact and be in the hof besides rhcp and maybe a couple others... california pizza is terrible and los angeles should be erased off the map.

all of you people who say new jersey is ugly are so wrong. You probably have only been on the turnpike or in some city like newark or camden. Well first of all, the turnpike is a freakin highway, how good should it look? and newark is a city, cities are never clean. If you actually come down to somewhere like Monmouth County, you'll see that it is so pretty. There are great farms, huge unique houses, and gorgouse landscapes. ANd all you californians whoa re like we have awesome surfing, well so do we. NJ beaches are great and we real boardwalks. New Jersey also has great weather, hot in the summer and cold in the winter. In new jersey we can go to the beach and go snowboarding without driving more than 2 hours. Best of all, we have WaWa's. If youve never been to one then you gotta go. They own. Once in Ocean City, one highway had 5 wawa in less than3 miles. Now isn't that a little crazy? Well, us New Jerseyeans love our coffe. So if anyone from California thinks they are so much better, they should just kiss my ass.:D

So...i think that Jersey is better because...well i live there. And i'm sure California is beautiful, but actually thinking about it...maybe both of the states are just as screwed. I mean, we're both in debt, we're both run by really stupid governors, idk. I think we both suck. It's just New Jersey is the lesser of two evils. the only ugly parts of jersey are the highways, and that is to keep unwanted people from traveling inward. but jersey residents know to turn on 89.5 and listen to some pirate radio while in traffic.

I can't believe that California is losing to New Jersey.
hey, elitists from L.A.; Los Angeles, California
you know who you are
you're driving fancy cars
your allowance exceeds my rent
well listen to what I have to say
remind yourselves every day
let's get the message on its way
well first of all,
fuck your fucking attitudes
how can you be so fucking rude?
you fucking look at me like when girls are jealous
and fuck your fucking L.A. bars
you're all a bunch of wannabe superstars
yeah, fuck your fucking act
you're a bunch of dressed up fucking rats
you get anything you want
mommy's jobless fucking runt
you're fucking lounging in daddy's fucking mansion
and all your fucking stupid names
Blair and Tavis, that's fucking lame
Z-A-H-C does not spell Zack,
what the fuck is with all that?
And you think you're so fucking impressive
Cause you can get your name on the fucking guestlist
raise your nose to the people in line
give the doorman a fucking high five
and then go
do my shoes match my shirt?
does my shirt clash with my pants?
do my pants match my eyes?
do my eyes look good tonight?
will this place be cool enough?
your hair looks oh, so tough
this looks so good for us
tonight my money's gonna buy me love
and fuck all of your deceiving
what's your fake heart fake fucking bleeding?
and all the girls you lay to your mat
are the same fucking girls you fucking laugh at
and fuck your fucking fake ass world
and all your handed out fucking thrills
some of us, we have to work hard
just to get our little part
and maybe your glamour's not in Boston
but my friends are fucking awesome
and we'll keep on doing our best
even though our lives are a mess
and we go
will this check support this tour?
will this tour lose my job?
without my job where's the rent?
should we all just call it quits?
the dinner dates sure cost a lot
when 28 bucks is all you got
and your life is at a stop
and all your dreams are all self-taught
and this is the difference between our lives
no wonder tonight you feel alright
and I'm sorry if my mind is occupied
I'm trying to forget to wonder why
we're built up from nothing
I'm trying to forget to wonder why

CA vs. NJ
im from california..
-I cuss a lot.
-I say "for sure" and "right on" and "hella" and I say it often.
-I know what real cheese & avocados taste like.
-I don't get snowdays off because theres only snow in Mammoth, Tahoe and Big Bear.
-Summers are really hot, and winters really cold. That's the way it is.
-I go to the Beach - not "down the shore" (who the fuck says that anyways?).
-I've been to "the city" (if your from California you don't say Frisco....you look stupid) and have eaten fresh clam chowder out of a sourdough bread bowl.
-The drinking age is 21 but everyone starts at 14 (legally 18 if you live close enough to the border).
-My governor can kick ur governors ass.
-I can go out at midnight and wear a t-shirt and shorts.
-I might get looked at funny by locals when I'm on vacation in their state, but when they find out I'm from California I turn into a greek GOD.
-I can get fresh and REAL Mexican food 24 hours a day (GOD bless LA COSTA)
-All the TV shows you "other" states watch get filmed here.
-We have In-N-Out (Arizona and Vegas are lucky we share that with them).
-I'm from California and I love it....

Just because you guys have an east coast bias and want to defent your miserable state, doesnt make it any better.
Wow, how in the hell is new jersey winning? this shouldn't even be close and you all know that. If California is home to "egotistical maniacs" then Jersey is home to the biggest pricks on the planet with annoying accents.

Fine, then the same stereotypes that everyone accuses california of having are pretty bullshit as well. The only reason Jersey is winning is because a majority of the people voting are from the east coast/live in jersey, if everyone from california started voting, this would be a landslide. And having "better" bands argument is rediculous, California has more famous people and bands than Jersey has citizens.
California was home to Tupac, and we have the most electoral votes. The end. West Coast!
Im surprised I havent posted in here yet.
I voted for Jersey because though it birthed Bon Jovi and Bruce Springstien, it birthed Thrusday, Saves The Day and The Early November...
just those 3 bands shut this poll down...hell just one of them would.
Yeah California has some great bands but...no.
It also created guidos...and if it wasnt for their spikey hair, wifebeaters, bling and love to pick up hot bitches in the club, my life wouldnt be whole.

Me and my friends surf so its not like california is the only state that you can surf in... and the boardwalks are greattt. plus we have Long Beach Island, the bestt vacation and summer spot everrr in my oponion. I've been to Cali and its nice and all but i still think New Jersey is banginnnn. it gets my vote <3 OH yeah, and for all the people calling New Jersey a shithole and stuff 1. you probably have never even been here and 2. have you looked around at LA and some of the other places lately? if you call that glamorous then New Jersey is freakin heaven. Sometimes people forget that California isnt what it looks like on TV except like Laguna Beach and some towns around there.

I wasen't really making a serious judgement on jersey, just an opprotune time for a futurama quote. no offense intended. My personal knowledge of NJ consists of a couple drives through it... but I still stick by CA. I mean, both are widely diverse, progressive states... but CA just has a stronger appeal to me, and since this is a music forum I let my musical taste sway my vote, so thats what I went with. why is everyone getting so defensive? There are shitty and nice places in both NJ and CA.
Still, I vote CA because of in-n-out, Magic Mountain, and because Psych is filmed there. I'm more used to it too.

Newark is a shit hole, I'll admit that.. The shore, well, besides all the guidos and roiders, its not terrible.. Yea, you can usually find it some where else, but where? Besides New York and New Jersey, there really aren't to many great states on the East, Middle, or West..

This poll is proof that Jersey Pride is one of the most powerful phenomena out there. Jersey is crazy. Misfits. Springsteen. Sinatra. WSOU. Weird NJ. We could go on forever. CA does have In-N-Out and Amoeba, but when they get the balls to move some franchises over here, there's nothing stopping us (Fatburger finally caved, its only a matter of time).

I'm not denying that what New Jersey has can be found elsewhere, what can be said though is that New Jersey has a lot to offer.. I've never traveled much so I can't say for sure, but I know that I am perfectly content with New Jersey.. I'm sure I'd love California or Montana, but for me, New Jersey tops all else..

Really depends on where you want to live.. Close to New York City? Close to Philly? I live 25 minutes from NYC in a pretty affluent area.. Also, you need to consider your expenses.. Are you going to rent or buy? Do you want to live in a city environment?
Considering there is no desert in New Jersey, I think you'll be good with not seeing any vast amounts of dryness.. Personally, if I were you, I'd either move to Hoboken, which is directly across from NYC. Rent will cost you a good 1800 a month but its worth it..
IT really all depends on you..

This is 12 pages in, but I live in south Jersey and I plan on going to California for college. A lot of the things you read in this thread have to do with north Jersey. South Jersey gets almost no state funding and the entire place is a shit hole. The shore towns are fun, but the weather hits extremes (hot, cold, snow, heat) and the money isn't down here like it is up north. It was a decent place to grow up, but I'm ready to move on.
I will miss WaWa though.

i have lived in new jersey and california and i must say, both are fucking crowded and polluted, but new jersey wins. no state has more pride (texas doesnt count, people just follow a stereotype). new jersey is smaller and you can meet so many people at so many awesome venues, i remember many a weekend in high school where church shows were nothing but a staple. also, i am 4$ away from new york city.

i'm from jersey and i just moved to the los angeles area and now here for the past 4 months.
1 We don't pump our own gas! (plus gas is about $1 cheaper)
2. We have dinners not dennys.
3. We are minutes from NYC (Never sleeps).
4. A few clubs/lounges/bars are open til 3am BUT the city stays open til 4am some til noon.
5. Food!!! You name it they have it. For example (Cuban, Colombian, Mexican, Greek, Italian, Steakhouses, Sushi, Seafood, etc...) Plus food is 100 times better then Cali.
6. Bagels
7. We dont' pump our own gas!
8. Dunkin Donuts (yea we have Starbucks but Dunkin Donuts regular coffee is better then Starbucks regular coffee and its cheaper.
9. Deli's!
10. Radio Stations. Whatever you're into we got it.
Things not so great about So California
1. Everything is so far apart to get anywhere.
2. No decent Italian Food. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT CHICKEN CUTLET IS!!!
3. Pizza?? (i never heard of you can't order a damn slice!)
4. I heard if you get a ticket the court fee's are about $300-$400 (NJ court fee is about $30)
5. TRAFFIC SUCKSS (NO MATTER WHAT TIME IT IS)
6. GANGS. Sorry but not into it and it looks like there is about a million different kinds.
But yes i'm in Cali and i'm home sick but my work is here. So I fly back home almost every other month!

If you want a city to live in I'd suggest not newark. Bergen County is a great area. Close to 4 malls. Mins from the City (NYC). NJ Transit runs like evey 10-15 minutes to NY. If you want closer to NYC then try Hoboken, Weehauken.

I'm Norcal-born and raised, so I'm bound to be biased...but I have traveled a lot of the country and northern California is better than just about everywhere. Then again, Socal is probably my least favorite place ever, so...it evens out. We might as well be separate states. But the Bay Area is amazing. We have such an awesome scene here. And whoever said they got jumped in Oakland...are you serious? Yeah, it's a bit sketch in places, but I'm a 20-year-old white girl and I wander around there all the friggin' time without being hassled. Were you screaming racial slurs or something?
2. We have dinners not dennys. - I assume you mean diners, we've got them too.
3. We are minutes from NYC (Never sleeps). - Which is a terrible fucking place.
4. A few clubs/lounges/bars are open til 3am BUT the city stays open til 4am some til noon. - What? Have you been to San Francisco?
5. Plus food is 100 times better then Cali. - I highly doubt you can find anything in New Jersey that you can't also find in the Bay Area. Nothing against Jersey, that applies to probably any metropolitan area in the country.
6. Bagels - Like we don't have them?
9. Deli's! - Ditto
10. Radio Stations. Whatever you're into we got it. - I fail to see why this is unique to Jersey or anywhere else.
Things not so great about So California
2. No decent Italian Food. NO ONE KNOWS WHAT CHICKEN CUTLET IS!!! - False.
3. Pizza?? (i never heard of you can't order a damn slice!) - False. Every pizza place in town offers slices. LA is no different.
5. TRAFFIC SUCKSS (NO MATTER WHAT TIME IT IS) - You chose to live in LA, I refuse to believe that no one warned you about that.
I also noticed that while a lot of the Californians are shit-talking Jersey as a place, most of the pro-Jersey people are shit-talking Californians as people. Generalization much?

6. are you kidding me? you can taste the difference between different bagel places. the size is different...the firmness, etc. there are lots of differences between bagels.

I think you need to specify when you say "fat sandwich" because technically you can only get them at a grease truck down in New Brunswick.. With exclusion of a few pizza places that may have them.. Although, I may be wrong.. But they originated there.. Fat Koko's are the best anyway..
New Jersey pizza is better than NYC's anyway... I live down here in D.C and haven't had a good slice of pizza or eaten a slice of pizza in 6 months.. Yes, it sucks.. But there is much more cultural food here.. If thats what your into..
NY/NJ Bagels are great.. Yes, NJ is the only place in the United States that you can get Taylor Ham also..
But, I have never been to Cali so I can't say what or what they don't have.. All I know is I was born in Jersey and love it.. Cali is on my spots to check out though..
And for the person who said something about pumping their own gas.. Why would you want to pump your own gas? Why not have someone else do that for you.. Then again, the price of gas is much cheaper in NJ than in Cali.. Also, NJ does not smell..

As of Jan 1st 2008, minimum wage is 7.15 an hour in NJ and 8.00 an hour in CA. Statewide that's a difference of 85 cents an hour. 3.50 - 2.85 = 65 cents. So we still come out ahead.

That's funny, I believe we were loosely discussing gas prices and the minimum wage, which really has little to do with broad spectrum socioeconomics and paycheck averages. But you want to make it techincal eh? that's cool, I can work with that too...
If you're basing your claim on outdated information, then technically you'd be correct. However, as of JAN 2008, CA WILL surpass NJ as the 5th highest wage earning state in the nation. This adjustment has been a long time coming, considering that wages are almost always represented by the base pay rate (i.e. minimum wage) and the real estate market. In 2006, NJ only surpassed CA in earned wages by a marginal percentage. In 2007, the two states were dead even for 5th place ranking. In fact, many local economists say that CA may have already surpassed NJ this year, which wouldn't be surprising considering the amount of economical growth this state has seen in the past couple of years.

In fact, many local economists say that CA may have already surpassed NJ this year, which wouldn't be surprising considering the amount of economical growth this state has seen in the past couple of years.

I'd love to know where in New Jersey you'd have visited... Camden? Newark? Paterson...
Jersey is the best state in the Union...
i've never seen someone so defensive about their state. Still wouldn't leave CA for anything... It has everything I'd want.

the news article you provided contradicts itself within the first paragraph, not exactly a reliable source, especially considering that finance wages and techonlogical wages account for a large percentage of CA's resident income. And I could give a shit about where you live. If you remember, you're the one who started in on me with "the price of gas", which, I might add, is a negligible expense for most people in the mid to upper income brackets.

And I suppose it's negligible for those who live in Hannah Montana Concert CA?
Well all in all, I totally agree with you and financially speaking, CA is much more affordable and has a higher economical growth than that of Jersey. Congratulations, you've made your point and now I think Cali is much better than Jersey, let me go change my vote now.

The end. West Coast!
Just forget about the fuckin' stereotypes. And how else would we win? huh? It'd be pretty fuckin amazing if half of the West Coast voted for us, right? You should be giving credit to our little ass state for even producing a great number of well known famous people and even legends for crying out loud. The funny thing is, look at Jersey, and then look a California and tell me how all you Cali people are gonna make such a big deal out of this. You're trying awfully hard to show up New Jersey in so many ways when you guys have a state at least 5 times bigger then us. Shouldn't you already assume your better without giving up a fight. You see that's why we're winning. Hell, if I didn't live in Jersey, I'd still vote for it. Think about it, a little ass state against one of the biggest in the U.S. hah. California be ashamed of yourselfs. But for the most part, I LOVE our accents. Just because this poll is Jersey vs. California doesn't mean you have to hate on us. Hey, I still like cali. There's nothing wrong with it. But of course I'm going to vote for my state. It doesn't make it any better or any less then yours. Peace.

I'm going to pretend like that's not extremely offensive. But, I guess it all depends on what girls you've actually met from Jersey.

I try to separate myself from the trashy clan of girls in NJ though.

Yeah, I'm from Jersey, have been all my life. I'm gonna give you everything about jersey, the good, the bad, and the ugly.
First... New Jersey people are conceited. It's true. We hate
everyone else. And we think we are better than everyone else. And we never stop talking about how great jersey is. Then we tell people to "shut the fuck up" when they tell us all we talk about is jersey. I just recently was in the south ... and I can honestly say, that I do think I am better than them. It's not my fault. It's cause I'm from jersey. My friends and I were the rudest, most obnoxious people there. Everyone just stared at us. Then we saw other rude people, and I asked them where they were from. They said jersey.
Why are New Jersey people self centered? Because we have reason to be.
Next, some of the most famous people have come from our
state. Just to name A FEW... Frank Sinatra, Bruce Springsteen, Kevin Smith, Whitney Houston, Martha Stewart, Lauryn Hill, Catch 22, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifa, My Chemical Romance, Bon Jovi, Jack Nicholson, Bruce Willis, The Four Seasons, Danny Devito, Tom Cruise .. and the list Goes on.
Not only do we have famous people, we rank in the top 10 of smartest states every year.
Not only are we smart & famous...we're rich. Bergen, Somerset, Morris, & Hunderton counties rank in the countries top 15 richest counties. And despite the slums of Newark (yes, Newark, not New -ark) & Camden which are some of the countries most dangerous places to live, we have 4 of the top 10 safest cities to live in the US.
And we smell? Yeah, we do. New Jersey smells like ASS. On the turnpike, between exits 14 and 17. That's like, 5 percent of the entire state.. Bayonne, Port Newark, and Secaucus. And the surrounding areas. That's it. The majority of the state smells like trees. Because the majority of the state is trees. In fact, three of New Jersey's cities rank in the countries top 10 least polluted cities. So shove it.
New Jersey is ideal. I live 20 minutes away from New York City and 45 minutes away from the famous jersey shore, which by the way is amazing. You think your beach is better? Fuck you. Why do you think MTV's true life had an episode titled "I'm a Jersey Shore girl." Because it's the best fucking shore in the country.
My house is 3 minutes to the nearest mall, 5 minutes to the next, and a 10 to the next. I just Counted 7 malls within a half hour of my house. Find me another state that has all that to offer.
Yeah, we have accents. Who gives a shit? Everyone has an accent. And no, we don't say "Joisey." We do say "cawfee and tawk." But I can tell you it's a hell of a better accent than you bitches from the south.
Hungry? Don't worry. We have 24 hour diners. A million of them. We also have Hoboken which has some of the finest places to eat. And you have not had real Italian food until you come here. Okay?
And WE can't drive? NO.. YOU can't drive. In the south the speed limit signs read: speed limit 60.. minimum 45. WHAT? That's why you people can't drive. Who has a minimum speed limit? New Jersey drivers like pissing other people off solely because of the reputation. This is what we will do...just so you know...if we see an out of state license plate, we'll tailgate your ass. Probably because you're only doing the speed limit & we want to go 20 over. Then, we'll cut you off... and go slow in front of you. Because we can. And because when you go home you're gonna complain about us. We like it, it doesn't bother us….it’s what we want.
We like fast things. Things move too slow in other states. You can tell that someone's from New Jersey by the way they walk. They walk really fast and have a strut that says "I'm better than you."
Music scene? Amazing. Remember Hunka Bunka?...DJais, and last but definitely not least... TEMPTS!!! Enough said. We also have the best local bands... The rap scene, I don't know much about that, but I know it's there…& I know it's good. Obviously the club scene. You don't know club music until you come into New Jersey... SERIOUSLY. - - - - "We don't pump our gas ... we pump our fists."
Just shut the fuck up. If you go to Seaside boardwalk or Belmar. You'll probably see some of the trashiest, skankiest girls & some of the most guido, gelled up hair, armani exchange wearing boys that take too many steroids and have too much sex… But they are gorgeous and they know how to dance better than anyone you ever met in your life. So yeah, the stereotype that all jersey chicks are trashy, is true ... but only if you go to Seaside. That's pretty much it. The rest of the state is full of confident, beautiful people that speak their mind.
The majority of Jersey people are Italian, or wish they were. We drink & smoke way too much. Oh yeah and we throw the sickest parties ... in the woods.
What else? Giants, Jets, Nets, and of course the Devils. They're
better than you. So shut the fuck up. And we have more Yankee fans than New York City. Come to jersey with a sox hat on ... I fuckin' dare you!
And oh yeah, we say "yo." Often. And "fuck." I don't complain that you say "y'all" so don't complain that I say "yo."
To sum up New Jersey, yeah, most of the stereotypes are true,
probably for about 5 percent of the state. The rest of the state is beautiful.
And yeah, we hate you. We love ourselves. Wanna know why? Because all you bitches hate us. How would you feel if the other 49 states spent all their time talking shit? We deserve to be our own country cause we're that cool.

I love how all anyone seems to know of California is the LA stereotype. I've got love for NJ, what with them giving us View Askewniverse, the Misfits, Thursday, My Chemical Romance, Saves The Day, and The Gaslight Anthem, but California is my home state, and we've got Six Flags, Sea World, Disney Land, California Adventure, Blink, Green Day, Rancid, Black Flag, Sublime, Pennywise, Bad Religion, The Offspring, The Aquabats, Dead Kennedys, Circle Jerks, The Adolescents, hardcore music in general, The Descendents, The Vandals, Social Distortion, Operation Ivy, NOFX, Jawbreaker, No Use For A Name, Reel Big Fish, KROQ, the Dodgers, In-N-Out, Amoeba Records, every kind of outdoor fun within two hours of wherever you are, generally nice weather, REAL Mexican food available on every street corner...
