I would check out that hallelujah cover because its a great song, but i've heard so many people cover it that it's lost its charm.

I think imogen did it best but thats just my opinion.

Jeff Buckley's pretty much made Hallelujah his own. It does not get any better than that.

No, you just like terrible music. Those songs are nearly flawless in their original form. I'm sorry they weren't nu-metal, but Marvin Gaye actually had talent and could sing live without throwing a fit like Maynard does.

The only one that really sticks out is Jeff Buckley's Hallelujah, pretty obvious one.

no, but he can, within his own subjective framework, say you're a fucking idiot. and that's what he's doing. why are you responding? You should be busy jacking off to bands that play in sort of weird time signatures with vocalists who can't make it through a set without throwing a fit.

True... It'd actually be quite an accomplishment to sound worse than the original. (Just got to the scream at 2:25 in that video... Hilarious. Love it.)

Oh, and this somehow reminded me of the DVD that came with Zao's The Fear is What Keeps Us Here. At one point they're talking about Metallica, and Steve Albini talks about how he had a strange fascination with St. Anger's sound for the longest time. Not that it's good, but it's so bad that it has to be intentional; Steve was saying how he's not sure if he could accomplish some of the horrible sounds on that record.

Bayside covers songs the way I like; the songs almost sound like B-Sides to their albums, but they still stay true to the originals. That's the stuff a good cover is made of...not just being on a Punk Goes... album.

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah
Bruce Springsteen - Trapped
Bruce Springsteen - The Fever. Southside Johnny is great, but it's the Boss!
Quoted because this is full of win
The Jimi Hendrix Experience - All Along the Watchtower
As much as a Dylan fan I am. Hendrix blows All Along the Watch Tower out of the water.
The Bouncing Souls - That's Youth
The Bouncing Souls - Lean On Sheena

"Hallelujah" doesn't really count because Rufus Wainwright and Jeff Buckley also did excellent covers of that song.

I'm going with Reel Big Fish's "Take on Me" Even though the original is good, you gotta add some horns and make it even better.

Most other cover versions I've heard of that song have been pretty decent, even the one you just posted wasn't completely abysmal.

Anyway, I don't really understand why you're arguing this so much, since obviously my post was fairly hyperbolic (clearly I haven't heard every cover of every Leonard Cohen song ever made). My point was, similar to the one that can be made about Dylan, Cohen wrote some great lyrics, but in terms of music composition he's fairly boring (usually just an acoustic guitar and not much else), which makes pretty much any cover of their song a little more interesting.

How do all these songs from Punk Goes Crunk keep popping up? Listen, just because you guys don't like rap doesn't mean the song is better. In many cases on that CD, it was pretty much comparing garbage to shit. Whether the original or the cover was the garbage or shit is kinda up in the air, but I don't really want either of them.

That Hot Rod Circuit song on there was pretty sweet, though.

nope, the dude is so out of tune on that song, I like the rap version a lot more. The only nice thing I can say about it, is that it's one of the only tdwp songs that doesnt sound exactly like all the others, but then again, it does.

i don't think this is true. like, every cover of bob dylan i've heard has been better than him.

yeah, see for me that would bother me because bob dylan has a very distinctive voice which gives him character, and add that into being a lyrical genius in my mind (cliche, i know), it totally makes a mess of the brilliance in his source material, to have someone else performing the lyrics without the mind and soul behind them. im not saying people should never play bob dylan songs ever, i mean i play plenty of other bands' songs myself, and i wouldnt discriminate from a band actually releasing that cover either, i just probably wont like it as much, espeically if its covering someone i consider to be a classic or one of my favorite bands.

dc Talk - "In the Light" (originally by Charlie Peacock)

WMSuhK_6_so

The dc Talk version is probably my all-time favorite song, and I only say "probably" to cover my bases, since that's such a strong statement. I don't know of any songs personally that can compete with that one.
