hey i'm doing a project where i'm supposed to explain a song to my english class and how the lyrics relate to poetry/the meaning of the song/underlying themes in the music and i decided to use The Sound by Further Seems Forever. here are the lyrics and my view on it...

If I only had an ocean to compliment the sky
I?d pull it down and paint it for you
and I?d never question why
cause red would mean you loved me
and blue would mean you cared
but black my heart when left alone to cold and killing stairs
This is the burning of a dream

The sound now turns to silence
but i'll keep spinning around
naked in the rain of my own tears
as they fall into the bucket of your apologies
while closing everyone else?s eyes
because your own are shut
not to see the volume rise again

Feels like I?m waiting in the last hiding place on earth
haman?s noose tight round my neck
but I?m saved and for 100,000 memories been washed ashore
be swept again by forever
and sailed away from you
now that the rain has ended
so the sun can shine through me

The sound now turns to silence
but i'll keep spinning around
naked in the rain of my own tears
as they fall into the bucket of your apologies
while closing everyone else?s eyes
because your own are shut
not to see the volume rise again

Only you could row my boat ashore
only you could set my fears at rest
but until lack of sympathies regress
I?m still waiting for your call
The sound now turns to silence

ok so heres what i get from this song-he really likes this girl but everything he wanted from her isnt what hes getting. the sound or good part of his relationship is now turning to nothing and now nothing can change it back to the way he wanted it to be. by haman's noose around his neck he means he is being persecuted as part of a group like haman (character in the bible, i did some research to find out who he was) was persecuting the jews in the old testament but his memories of good times have barely saved him and now hes getting better (sun shine through him). only her apologizing completely could make him completely better and hes still got a small feeling for her (waiting for her call). i might be wrong on stuff but this is why i'm asking for insight so i can get all sides of the story on it. thanks to everyone that answers if anyone does at all haha.

i think your looking way too far into that song. try 'blank page empire' or 'against my better judgement' by FSF. those seem much easier to decipher and explain

I'm bad at this interpretting stuff, but somethings to consider (they prolly aren't right):
they are a christian band, so sun= god (blackw/out god to light of god in him)

he begins with visual illustrasions, colors and such and then in the chourus refers to sound and turning the volume down, as if his words paint a picture, and then she shuts her eyes to the picture so she can't see, but also can't hear since sound and sight are diectly related...

a horizon- a sunset- the sky is reflected in the ocean, the red of the sun is their love, but the sun has to set, blue- at least she still cared, maybe not love anymore, and then finally all traces of the sun are gone and there is no reflection anymore (also think back to light refrence as god)

insincere apologies (think of how long it would take for tears to fill up a bucket)

forever- eternity, the problem doesn't seem as big in the sceme of things (saved- jesus died on the cross, blah blah-- 100,000 memories of stuff in the bible) reference to earth is prolly signifigant

rain is done and his self pity is gone and there is room for god again

aw man, the more i look at this, the less i think a girl is involved at all-- i think the name is very significant, The Sound, whatever it is, is clearly to point of the

WAIT! read in the book of Exodus (i think) the story of noah and the arc
also, find out what the last hinding place on earth is-- i think, since god got angry at the world and killed everyone with the rain, he might be refering to his feeling of lonelness, he feels like the only one of his kind so myabe he feels prosectued for his beliefs like the jews, when you read the story of noah pay
attention to any aspects of sound (I might be WAY off)

my best guess it has something to do with how hard it is to be a christain and never being good enough for your god--

but either way, songs can be interpretted as you see them-- just go with your strongest feeling, if you give a solid report, no one can tell you you're wrong, it's a song, you don't know what he's thinking, as long as you can make a connection with the themes (and they can be from any angle) you will do fine, i remember doing this sophomore year in english-- if it makes any sense at all you'll be fine

hope i could help and good luck! (I know it's all over the place, sorry if it's too hard to understand what i meant, i was just typing anything i thought of, and i changed my mind a lot, but at least there are several perspectives to think about-- none are really "right") :)
