I am happy for this guy because he has overcome the absolutely dastardly, life-destroying trait of ugliness.

But damn, it must have been hard. The guy wanted to kill himself. Imagine looking into a mirror and hating what you look like. Every. Fucking. Day. I don't know if I could live with that.

So I promise to myself to never become overweight. Because once that happens, you lose everything. Your confidence, your friends, your whole life.

I feel worse, though, for the people who have gotten the short end of the genetic stick, whose looks are beyond their control. There's this one person I know, who I am repulsed by the sight of. She is genuinely physically painful to look at, being just so fat and ugly. That's how hard it is! Imagine being written off at first impression. By employers. By new people you meet. By people you're attracted to.

Now I'm not the hottest person on the planet. But I thank God, luck, fate, genetics, destiny, whatever, that I am not one of the worst looking.

If you are ugly, temporarily or permanently, you better fucking get to work at it. Diets, excercise, cosmetic surgery. Fucking do it! Because once you hit 'ugly', the world will take everything away from you.

this is actually, a very decent thread, especially given that it's in PL. it's something ive always thought about, i mean for a person to be lumped under the ubiquitous human conception of what is ugly, when you think about it they receive more prejudice than any cultural or ethnic group.

I'm here to say no. Looks aren't inconsequential, they aren't shallow. Looks are real, and important. How you visually present yourself to other people, and for yourself as well, is important. And looks have real, tangible benefits attached to them.

Physically attractive people are:

- paid more for the same work
- likely to be employed over a less attractive person with the same qualifications
- tipped more
- more likely to be considered trustworthy
- more likely to be considered friendly and approachable
- more likely to be desired by the opposite sex
- more likely to be believed when telling a lie
- are assigned other positive attributes that have nothing to do with their looks

I always wondered, if you put two people in front of someone, one conventionally attractive, one not so conventionally attractive (an Uggo, if you will) and told that person to go interact with one of them...which do they choose and why? Do they go up to the attractive person, because they are attractive, or do they go to the Uggo because they are intimidated. How does the 'attractiveness' of said person affect who they choose? Yeah...not at all. I only use liquid eyeliner, and I'm not pretending to be "au natural" nor am I jealous of the "prettier" girls in the least bit. It would be really hard to be obese, but not only because of my looks. It would obviously matter that I hated my body, but it would also be hard to do everyday things, like walking up stairs. I feel so, so sorry for people who are obese. It really must suck, as you said.

My younger sister was ALWAYS chubby, it wasn't her fault, she was just not like me and my older sister, we were both tall and skinny. Though she had lots of "popular" friends in Junior High and such she was always kind of left out one way or another it seemed like. She wasn't lazy, she was in more then one sport, was doing practices for them around 2 hours EVERY day. She is now a Junior in HS (going to be this september) and she lost a TON of weight once she finally well, grew up and got into puberty full on etc. She is now skinny. Her friends used to go to Chelan EVERY summer but had NEVER invited her, and I knew why, or at least so I thought. her FIRST summer as a "Skinny" kid, guess where she got invited to go this summer? Chelan (Lake in WA that alot of wealthy people have houses on). Now, I am sure some people could argue this is coincidence, but her friends that go are all Wealthy, Skinny, and very pretty girls, and I find it disgusting that they are her friend yet NEVER invited her until she was suddenly skinny?

It's not a coincidence. I would never wish being unattractive or overweight on anyone.

Call it shallow but it's important to look good and it does make life easier. Around here if you weigh more than 120 pounds you're considered 'less fortunate' and no one will really hang out with you. It's the one thing they drilled into us in deportment school "no one wants to play with the fat kid".

Its a really shitty thing to say, and no one should ever grow up and be taught this way but it happens. Being thin and presentable in this day and age seems like the only way to live right now.

An interesting topic, I feel like adding my two cents.

My younger sister was ALWAYS chubby, it wasn't her fault, she was just not like me and my older sister, we were both tall and skinny. Though she had lots of "popular" friends in Junior High and such she was always kind of left out one way or another it seemed like. She wasn't lazy, she was in more then one sport, was doing practices for them around 2 hours EVERY day. She is now a Junior in HS (going to be this september) and she lost a TON of weight once she finally well, grew up and got into puberty full on etc. She is now skinny. Her friends used to go to Chelan EVERY summer but had NEVER invited her, and I knew why, or at least so I thought. her FIRST summer as a "Skinny" kid, guess where she got invited to go this summer? Chelan (Lake in WA that alot of wealthy people have houses on). Now, I am sure some people could argue this is coincidence, but her friends that go are all Wealthy, Skinny, and very pretty girls, and I find it disgusting that they are her friend yet NEVER invited her until she was suddenly skinny?

Oh, it's definitely real. I think Australia is like any other place and has its areas where this is a sort of requirement. You need it to become a debutante... and where i'm at if you arent a deb you're nothing.

It's really stupid and old school... and yeah you have classes on posture, media training, eating, clothing, dancing, mannerisms etc. It takes about 4 hours a week i think and you do it for 2 or 3 years.

I definitely wouldn't call it common for all of Australia, but it definitely is for my area. Even males have an equivalent class for it, forgot the name of it though.

The male version of deportment classes is a tad different. They do the classes of how to eat with us, ballroom dancing and public image but the rest is completely separate.

Haha, they do 'courting' classes which i think is hilarious, how to choose a woman, how to ask a woman out and how to be chivalrous really. Never let her open the door, never let her grab your hand, never lean on her (physically i mean), never make her pay for anything. They do get a how to dress course too but really they are boys and will always just wear variations of the same thing all the time. Lucky guys get more sport training than we do - they get to play polo and rugby whilst we learn theory so we can watch them play and understand.

I got a virus that killed my hard drive. I have horrible luck with computers though, if I get a new one, it will be my third macbook in two years.

I have a terrible scar located under my nose. I've been plagued with ugliness for a while, but I've still managed to find someone who is attracted to me. How did I do this? Wear. decent. fucking. clothing. You could be terribly plain and average looking, but if you make an effort to wear some nice threads, you can greatly increase your appearance without relying on plastic surgery to help you out.

Exactly. People that say things like 'personality is most important' and 'it's what's on the inside that matters' piss me off. If I grabbed a drop dead gorgeous model and a hideous looking obese Wal-Mart greeter and told that person 'Look at/talk to/touch/fuck only one of them', they are picking the model, and if they don't...what the fuck is wrong with them? Look at this model!

Of course, personality comes into account when you enter relationship mode, but I don't go walking into a bar and think 'I'm gonna go talk to the person who looks like they are a good person...on the inside'.

Then he knocks out the other hot girl and says 'They just keep gettin' hotter and hotter, can't wait to see who's next!' Then Baby Beluga comes out of the car, and the guy actually starts to laugh. At the end of the episode he just high fives her. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

I think this pretty much proves all the points made in here, nicely wrapped up into one.

well, i would probably be disappointed as well. that's because i would have imagined that girl to be my dream girl. i would have been disappointed even if she was hot. at least at first sight. plus, it's not like the appearance doesn't mean anything. if you don't find a girl fairly attractive it's probably not working.
