holy shit @ tom watson, nice first round 65

Watching some of it now, seems like Tiger did the same thing here as he did at Bethpage (not the same way of course). Nice to see Watson's round and personally, i like Villegas so i am glad to see he had a good first round.

Tiger is choking again in the first round (+1) this cost him the us open and the masters
jbaseball44
07/16/09, 08:32 AM
I wouldn't say +1 is a complete choke, if the lead stays at -5 he is still very very much in it with a solid round tomorrow.

Very true but watching him in the last two majors he doesnt have the swagger of old, but watching his tourny he was tearing it up. I dont wanna say under pressure but it just seems like he's pressured to win a major after his surgery

His big problem is that 75 players are ahead of him right now...if only 10% of players tomorrow play under par, that's still 7 or 8 guys that are already ahead of him going further ahead. Unless the course gets a lot harder (the winds pick up, etc), that's 6 shots that are gonna be tough to make up without shooting a few 66 or 67 rounds

woods wins his tournaments on friday and saturday, he's historically been a mediocre to slow starter in the majors

this is very true. he must go out and shoot a round of 68 tomorrow. if he does that he should be in good position heading into the weekend.

I would love to see Watson sustain this and make a fun.

As much as i would like to see Watson make a great run, I just cant see him going all the way...gonna have to get up early to check this out on the internet
Camilo had a nice first round, hopefully he can keep it together. His scorecards are usually pretty colorful.
AK on the otherhand would be right in it too if it weren't for that one hole. He was probably drunk today.

I usually don't start watching until Saturday, but it's good to see Harrington under par for once in his life (aka this season).

Jimenez is having a shocker.

Harrington will be a stayer. I reckon a top 5 finish from him. Jiminez will finish over par today.

Currently following it on the BBC website...
The second day is proving to be tougher than yesterday.
But seeing Tom Watson ripping the course was awesome.
He won at Turnberry back in '77. Just shows you never too old.
And yes Harrington has a change, he plays well when the weather is awful
Not sure that Tiger Woods will make the cut, he'll not relish the conditions.
It's expect to get worse.

Just woke up and turned it on, i am hoping Duval can get it down to even but it seems like he is all over the place today, very colorful scorecard.

tiger will make the cut, and may even contend. the lead should remain at 5.
does anyone know if the weekend will be streamed live for US viewers?
jbaseball44
07/17/09, 06:55 AM
Yeah i think this day sets up nicely for tiger to shoot a solid round (2 or 3 under) and be right around the lead for the weekend and goddammit can Duval make a par

jesus is it dark there
preppyak
07/17/09, 08:57 AM
Wow...Tiger needs to start driving with his 7 iron or something...its pretty awful how he is with his driver and woods
edit: hahaha...100 people looking for the ball, jesus

07/17/09, 09:08 AM
yeah he's in some serious trouble now, has to get up and down for a 6 which would put him at +4. he was hitting the ball pretty decently up until he gave that bogey back at 8.
jbaseball44
07/17/09, 09:28 AM
yeah i don't know what happened, he looked pretty good through 7 and now seems like he has completely fallen apart

07/17/09, 09:31 AM
that drive into the bunker isn't helping either

How do you guys feel about tiger making the cut?
StuGrimson
07/17/09, 09:51 AM
He wont miss the cut because he will find a way to scramble for a birdie or two on the way in. I sure as hell hope he misses though.
we are cured
07/17/09, 09:53 AM
unfortunately for him i dont believe there's enough time to push the cut line back to where he'll likely finish. i don't see any birdies coming on his card without another bogey or two.
StuGrimson
07/17/09, 09:54 AM
after that last shot maybe ill change my vote
jbaseball44
07/17/09, 09:58 AM

two birds, no bogeys and hope it comes back to +5 (i think it will)
jbaseball44
07/17/09, 10:03 AM
I mean with the way he is playing, obviously he could birdie three holes and make the cut but it doesn't seem like he will

Yeah...but he bogeyed 15 and 16 yesterday with practically no wind...god knows what he'll do there today.
I bet all the PGA people and ABC are freaking out right now...they know their ratings are about to tank if he misses the cut. No Phil in there to draw other people...and unless Tom Watson is still up near the lead Sunday, it could be super low ratings
edit: haha, after that putt at 15 Tiger had a very Nixonian scowl on his face
we are cured
07/17/09, 10:26 AM
nah the british doesn't do fantastic ratings because of the hours its on, so i'm sure they're not panicking. if it was the masters or us open they would be.

It's awesome that Tom Watson is still leading. He's a legend still.
I still can't get my head round the fact he won at this same course 32 years ago.
There's a few Brits up there: Fisher, Wall and Westwood.
Harrington struggled but he's made it, by one shot.
The cut was +4.
I lol'd at Woods missing the cut, he was shockingly bad.

Course is playing pretty tough today, Marino is all over the place, Goosen looks decent so far and Watson was playing well till he hit that last iron shot in the bunker.

07/19/09, 10:23 AM
wow, and 30+ years later, Watson has another putt at Turnberry to win the British
edit: And Andy North going for the jinx early...not even close

Was just thinking that myself, both missed makeable putts on 18
preppyak
07/19/09, 11:00 AM
why do they even go back for analysis from Andy North...he just said "he's made thousands of these putts before...he's gonna be able to hit this hard, he WILL make it" before Watson missed the putt.

07/19/09, 12:15 PM
What annoyed me was Mike Tirico...normally I like him as an announcer, but it was clear he had seen the Jim Nantz "A tradition like none other" commercial a few too many times before calling this British Open, because he spent most of the round calling Watson's shots like each one would become legendary. It got annoying on the front 9, it became unlistenable by the back 9.
And Andy North finished it off nicely with the "Watson will make this" jinx

Did anyone see how bad of a tan line Cink had after his round? holy fuck.
