These are widely hailed as two of the greatest albums of all time. Which one do you enjoy more?

Pet Sounds, easily.

Oh, and being Rolling Stone's opinion (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5938174/the_rs_500_greatest_albums_of_all_t ime) doesn't necessarily equate being "widely hailed".

Haha dude, you can read any music publication and I guarantee you these will be at or near the top. I know it's cool to bash Rolling Stone, but cmon. If you don't recognize the universal clout these albums hold you've lived under a rock your whole life.

I'd take Dark Side of the Moon over either of those any day.

I would have included an "other" option, but I really wanted to hear what people had to say specifically about these two albums. Mainly because of the competitive nature between the two groups.

And yes, Dark Side is a stellar album. I'd rank it in my top 5 easily.

It has nothing to do with being cool. Rolling Stone is a stupid fucking publication by anyone's standards. I mean, look at these reviews they gave for fantastic albums:

Neutral Milk Hotel- In The Aeroplane Over The Sea (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/neutralmilkhotel/albums/album/313120/review/5945001/in_the_aeroplane_over_the_sea)
The Flaming Lips- The Soft Bulletin (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/theflaminglips/albums/album/218731/review/5943141/the_soft_bulletin)
Tom Waits- Mule Variations (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/tomwaits/albums/album/135424/review/5941498/mule_variations)
Elliott Smith- XO (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/elliottsmith/albums/album/119673/review/5945709/xo)
Jeff Buckley- Grace (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/jeffbuckley/albums/album/145800/review/5944561/grace)
Silver Jews- American Water (http://www.rollingstone.com/artists/silverjews/albums/album/96930/review/5941881)

And those are just from the 90's. They suck, and they don't deserve to be published or read by anybody. As far as this discussion goes, yes, Pet Sounds deserves to be at or near the top regardless. Sgt. Pepper's... deserves to be somewhere in the mix of the best albums ever, but it's certainly not the best. It isn't even the Beatles' best album, as I would consider Revolver, The Beatles (White Album), and Abbey Road to be better than it. Try not to steal the opinions of the worst music publication ever and come up with your own next time.

As good as The Beatles are and how much they influence and the impact of that band, Pet Sounds is such a great album. That album has influenced to do harmonies on many songs and the legacy of that album impacts many artists, whether it's punk, rap or pop music. No album has better harmonies than Pet Sounds. Ever.

Wow man. I never said that I support Rolling Stone or that I'd rank the two in the same place on my own list. Even though they are #1 and #2 for RS, the fact of the matter is they are still groundbreaking albums that should be talked about. I've been a huge fan of music from the 60s and 70s since I was a kid, I was raised on The Beach Boys and the Beatles. Sgt. Peppers may not be your personal favorite, and it's probably not even mine, but you can't deny that out of all their albums it was the most significant for marking huge changes in the way a band operated and recorded. It was the height of The Beatles doing what they did as an actual unified group. That is why I used Sgt. Pepper against Pet Sounds. These two groups are well known (Brian Wilson and McCartney have each made comments about this) to have been inspired by each others work, with these two albums specifically coming after the other group had released a gem. Regardless, it's an actual music poll and I'm tired of polls about completely random shit. I'd much rather talk about these two albums than bat shit and monopoly pieces. Just because I want to see how AP feels about these records dosn't mean I can't form my own opinion, thank you.

177. One Nation Under a Groove (http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/_/id/6599186), Parliament/Funkadelic

Yeah, there's so many things that piss me off about that list. Like how the Beatles have seven or so albums before the Velvet Underground has one, or This Year's Model in the 90's and Marquee Moon and Remain In Light aren't even in the top 100. The list of complaints with it goes on and on.

You are totally right, when they initially reviewed Pinkerton by Weezer, they called it the 2nd worst album of 1996. Then 10 years later, they went back on that statement and said it was their best album, so just because it is Rolling Stone doesn't mean that it's this all-knowing magazine. People run the magazine and it's based on those people's opinions.

Sgt Peppers is vastly over-rated, like stated above it's not the Beatles' best album (I'd give that honor to Abbey Road)

and Pet Sounds is one of the most over-looked albums of all time, one of my favorites of all time. It's INCREDIBLE from beginning to end.

besides, there would be no Sgt. Peppers without Pet Sounds

And there would be no Pet Sounds without Rubber Soul...so I guess that evens things out?

right, but the thread is Sgt Peppers vs Pet Sounds...

if it was Rubber Soul vs Pet Sounds that point would be valid.

Haha I know, I created the thread ;-)
But I think it applies, you're saying without Pet Sounds the Sgt. Peppers album wouldn't happen...I'm saying that it was just The Beatles proving again that they were on top. Also, Sgt. Peppers still would have happened, you are talking about two (possibly three if you include Harrison) of the greatest songwriters of all time here...even without Pet Sounds it would have been an amazing album. All Pet Sounds did was put some extra fuel under the fire.

Oh yeah I would never ignore the influence that it had on the record (I mentioned it earlier in the post). I just think that the since the amazing talent of Lennon-McCartney on Rubber Soul was what inspired The Beach Boys in the first place, Sgt. Pepper would have been able to (and did) go above and beyond what you hear on Pet Sounds. I'm not trying to deny the greatness of Pet Sounds though, it really is fantastic.
