View Full Version : Which of these bands had the best debut album?
jtresk26

I know this poll is only limited to 10 choices and I know that I may have forgotten a lot of good debut albums, but these are the ones that I wanted to put down. This poll is based on your opinion of the whole album, not best-selling or influence on other artists. I know I also cover bands that are ska, pop-punk and emo, but I just want to hit a huge audience with this poll. If I'm missing a band's debut album that you like, write a comment because I would want to say what you think.

I was going to say FOB until I saw that the choice was Evening Out... In my opinion that album shouldn't even be counted as part of their discography.

Yeah, but it is technically their debut. If Take This to Your Grave was their debut, I would have definitely voted for them instead of Cheshire Cat.

probably Sum 41, the other bands i liked their 2nd albums a lot more, most of them their 1st album was drivle just kind of finding their feet, but i guess there is half hour of power (was that first?)

Half Hour of Power is technically considered an EP, but a CD is considered at least a half hour, so...

As a debut Chroma blows the rest of these albums out of the water. I'm not a huge Cartel fan, but it definitely showed their chops as song writers, and it took most of these bands a few albums do that.
pretty sure half hour of power come out before all killer no filler

Chroma, but I think TTYG should count as the FOB debut. However inaccurate that may be.
All Killer is not their debut. I'm sure someone posted that already, but Blink got my vote. If All Killer was their debut, I would've gone with that. Stupid technicality.

not that its the be all and end all of correct info, but seems youre right as wikipedia says its an half hour EP and AKNF as their debut studio album, but yeah 10 songs is a big arse EP, how did they pull that little trick?

My guess is as good as yours, you know. But if that was their first CD, I would have made my decision easier. Not that I don't like the EP, but compared to AKNF, it's not as good.

out of that list, I went with Chroma because its one of the only pop punk albums I can still actually stomach.
but I think there are a lot of other bands that had stronger debuts than on that list. The Fleet Foxes debut is absolutely divine for example. Also Sunny Day Real Estate and Mineral had some genre defining debutes as well.

I piked All Killer No Filler because it was the best album on the list, but obviously it wasn't Sum 41's debut. It was more of their 'mainstream debut' if anything.

True that you can see it on this site, but 40 oz. to Freedom as a whole album compared to Chroma, I would take Chroma. I like 40 oz. to Freedom, but as a whole album compared to Chroma, Chroma has some better songs compared to 40 oz. to Freedom. I know that doesn't right because both bands sound totally different, but if it was Sublime's self-titled, I would go with that in a heartbeat.

Buddha.....
not to be an ass or something, but while it does in fact have 14 tracks, i think that's more like a long demo than an official studio album. the only reason i even say anything is because i thought exactly what you did about buddha, so i looked it up, and that seems to be the deal.

think of old 60's and 70's Medieval movies and add a twist of folk and a walk through the woods with a pinch of Beach Boy's-caliber harmonies and thats what Fleet Foxes sounds like. And it's perfect.
Sunny Day Real Estate is the foundation for a majority of the bands discussed on this website. Diary sounds like a post-grunge band with a more gut-wrenching twist. full of simple ,but intricate with their emotion, songs. Think of early Jimmy Eat World meets Nirvana. We wouldn't have the portion of the bands on this website like Copeland, Anberlin, Brand New etc (that "sort" of "emo???" sound) without that record. Mineral's Power of Failing sounds similar but it's got such a harder edge to it (think of an early Your Favorite Weapon) I'd argue its MUCH better than Diary is and has a lot more replayability, though, in my opinion Mineral's true gem is EndSerenading which is a definite staple in my book if you enjoy any album discussed on this website.

I will definitely check those bands out. The only knowledge that I knew of either band was that the bassist of the Foo Fighters, Nate Mendel, played/ plays for Sunny Day Real Estate.

For this poll I voted for Liberal Animation by NOFX. I always liked the very early NOFX stuff because is was proper punk. Of course they'd go to a more mainstream sound, but this record was awesome.
For other debuts not in the pool, it would have to be The Offspring's self-titled release from '89. And ditto for Type O Negative's 'Slow Deep and Hard' which is one of those albums full of anger and hardcore orintated carnage with the lick of Sabbath thrown in for good measure. Best two personal faves in my view...

It is an extended play. And it is considered an EP because they have less than 30 min. on it because they fill it with dead air, so the next time you want to challenge someone, make sure it is someone dumber than you.
