what are some songs that left you speechless the first time you heard them, knocking all the wind from your lungs and reminding you what it means to love music?

"The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. I" - Neutral Milk Hotel
"Pictures of Me" - Elliott Smith
"Stillness is a Move" - Dirty Projectors
"The Only One" - Manchester Orchestra (that wore off quickly haha)
"Your 8th Birthday" - Cloud Cult

you turn.

I Can Barely Breathe - Manchester Orchestra

love music, lets see.

Foreplay/Longtime - Boston, I love the tension that builds up and how you are just ready to have something crazy happen then bam the singing and main part of the song hits, turns out to be a different style but still is awesome.

Is there a difference between being floored and love at first sight (or listen)...?

like, for instance, i always really liked "Paranoid" by Radiohead. however, when i first listened to the songs in my OP, my jaw dropped open. like, for "The Only One", all I could do was say, "oh my God". haha.

edit: sorry if this post makes no sense. i've been a little out of it today.

My introduction to Northstar was through the acoustic version of "For Members Only", and it's still one of the greatest songs I've ever heard. I can't exactly place why it induces speechlessness.

Let Down - Radiohead
I think that song is the pinnacle of beautiful. Especially when Thom hits his falsetto near the end... my god. The first time I played this song, I was driving home from the record store, and I swear I nearly teared up.

Never Meant - American Football
Fantastic guitar work. I adore the beginning of this song.

Shake It Out - Manchester Orchestra
When they started playing this live, long before it was recorded, I loved it. But once I heard it on record, I was simply stunned by the ending. I can't explain it - there's just something about those distorted chords and the bombastic drums that gets me every time.

Lack of Color - Death Cab for Cutie
Sparse, but elegant. I think the reason this one stands out for me as a speechless moment is because I can relate to it so well.

Degausser - Brand New
I still stand by my statement that this is most badass song Brand New has ever written. I love every instrument's part: the slinky beginning guitar riff, the bass line, the drums (especially live). The first time I heard Jesse scream " the storm is coming, THE STORM IS COMING YEAHHH!", and the guitar does that wicked bend/vibrato, I was floored.

Thrice - "The Artist in the Ambulance"
Not because it's the most amazing song ever or anything, but the lyrics just hit me at the perfect time in my life. It was just one of those moments where you hear something, and it just strikes the right nerve.

Brand New - "Jesus"
See above.

Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago
When I first heard "Skinny Love," I knew I'd love Bon Iver, but I wasn't floored or left speechless or anything. The CD as a whole, though, just captivated me so much when I first bought it. Something about the vocals and the production is just so easy to get lost in.

Basically a lot of Unbroken songs in general but...
Unbroken - Razor
Cocteau Twins - Heaven or Las Vegas
Galaxie 500 - Blue Thunder
The Smiths - Half a Person, I Know it's Over
Slowdive - Dagger, Summerdays, Bleed
No Warning - All New Low (Ill Blood's so good.)

Brand New - Degausser
It was the first time I ever heard Brand New and now TDAGARIM is one of my favorite albums of all time.

Cursive - Driftwood
It's just such a great, atmospheric song. At the time I hadn't heard anything like it before.

Thrice - Of Dust and Nations
Thrice had been my favorite band since TAITA but this song stood out so much on Vheissu. One of my all time favorites.

Manchester Orchestra - Where Have You Been?
It was my introduction to the band and it's still my favorite song by them.

Radiohead - Reckoner
I'm not a big Radiohead fan but this song gave me shivers the whole time. Really beautiful, I have it on repeat a lot.

Cyga
07/18/09, 11:46 PM
The mention of John Coltrane reminds me,

Sun Ship - John Coltrane

I had never heard avant-garde before this, and it truly felt like organized insanity to me. Somehow it was a mess that blended together.

also, The Gunner's Dream - Pink Floyd

I would say more than a handful of their songs left me amazed, but the emotion in the vocal delivery can pierce through anything. Not even their greatest song, but it has that effect for the first listen, and usually for many more.

Bon Iver-Skinny Love His voice in this just absolutely kills me, I realize songs like Wolves and For Emma may show that off more, but this song just really hit home with me for some reason.

Radiohead-How to disappear Completely I prefer "Guitar" Radiohead but the pure beauty of this song left me speechless, the first time I heard it was in my room in the middle of the night as I was trying to fall asleep, the perfect atmosphere.

Manchester Orchestra-Colly Strings Specifically from about 3:00 onward, the defining moment of the record for me

Say Anything-Woe The shift into the second half of this song completely floored me. I thought I knew exactly where it was going and the 180 it pulls just completely took me by surprise and I was super anxious to see where the record would go next.

The Matches-Sunburn Vs. The Rhinovirus E.Von dahl was one of the first records I ever bought, so I was very excited to hear Decomposer. This was the song where I realized that this record was something very special, the off the wall lyrics combined with an awesome bridge caused me to pause the record and just take a break for a few minutes, because I wanted the experience to last longer.

The Format-If Work Permits For teen heartbreak, Dog Problems is the album to go to. It was quite an experience listening to it for the first time but this song, like Woe, took a direction I did not expect it to. Nate's voice in the second half just completely got to me. When he yells " INSTEAD OF A COLD GOOD BYE" it still gives me chills.

The Smiths-Half a Person "16 clumsy and shy, thats the story of my life" Hearing this as a 16 year old made me realize how not alone music can make you feel, it was just pure comfort.

Just said Skinny Love! The chorus of that song, the "i told you..." lines are fucking heartwrenching.

Thrice-Beggars. I just heard it, and I don't think that it is humanly possible to hold out for the album, knowing that there is a leak out there

Seeing Brand New play Jesus on Saturday left me speechless. All I did was sit there with my eyes locked on 'em and I felt a huge peace/reverence come over me. It seemed so odd that other people were singing along and jumping and moving their hands and stuff. I couldn't have.
