Mute Math (http://www.myspace.com) is suing (http://www.newsone.ca/westfallweeklynews/stories/index.php?action=fullnews&id=152983) Warner Brothers for "breach of contract and negligent misrepresentation." (Source (http://www.pastepunk.com))

okay isn't that a bit overreacting? if one of mm's eps was on a christian label and mm's fan base is mostly christian, one would assume you are a christian band. well at least i would. to me it looks like more of a misunderstanding rather than "negligent misrepresentation".

It would be way too easy for them to just go with the Christian label cop out and become huge in the Christian market.

And in October and November, the act supported fellow Christian band Mae.

Funny, cause Mae has repeatedly said they are not a Christian band either.

it's more of were sueing to get out of our contract with people we dont want to be in business with than... hey we could get some money out of this, if they wanted money they would have released under the word label

Thats true, even though they are on a predominatly christian label (tooth & nail), the fact of the matter is even if all the members of the band are christian, and even if the music is focused twoards christianity in some way it is still far too easy to just label yourself christian and blow up in the christian music scene. lets be honest as long as your singing about jesus most people will buy whatever turd album your selling. I think its good for bands like Mute Math to branch away from the christian label, more people are open to your music if you dont have that kind of tag. Going back to christianity, you cant expect to spread the word of God when your singing to people who allready belive. for people to be upset by this is just stupid.

Have you guys heard the old stuff - under Earthsuit? The band should be sued themselves for that crap!

The Police should sue them for copyright infringment or something. :)

Yeah, Billboard needs to do some fact checking. The key distinction is Mae is band of guys who are Christian, not a per se "Christian band".

everyone assumes mae is a christian band because they are on tooth and nail but tooth and nail is not strictly a christian label. mutemath made no claims either however i cant say i didnt assume mutemath was a faith influenced band myself because i did. the biggest thing now is that the line between christian and mainstream has been smeared which in my opinion is for the best. i mean come on, would everyone still like underoath if they knew how strongly based their faith is?

Its really not that big of a deal. They aren't saying or doing anything that should cause any waves in the "christian music scene" they aren't saying they want no part in it, they just were under the impression they would be marketed in both markets and it doesn't see to be happening. I mean they are still playing christian venues and such, so i don't see this as a big deal at all....

It's a huge deal for them, they're trying not to get pigeonholed in a crappy market. If you're a band that wants to grow and mature and gain an audience, adopting the "Christian" label is probably one of the worst ways to get stuck in a certain place.

I'm glad they're suing Warner. If you go back and read their myspace blog then you'll see how Warner basically screwed them over (and why the new CD has taken so long) by trying to just pawn them off to their religious imprint Word, when Warner promised them they wouldn't be put on Word. Yeah, it'd be easy for them to make money like that, but their passionate about the music and like I said, they're trying not to get pigeonholed as a "Christian" band. Are they faith influenced? Definitely. Are they Christians? Definitely. But just because they tour "Christian" venues and with "Christian" acts doesn't mean they want or take on the label. Hell, Circa Survive was on that tour with Mae, too. Does that make them a christian act?

I was not saying it wasn't a huge thing for them. What I was responding to was all these people saying it is going to effect their fan base. They aren't doing anything wrong here. That is what I was saying. They were under the impression they would be marketed differently, and they aren't. So I think its great they are doing this. All this talk about how they will alienate their Christian fan base is rediculous. They are still playing christian events and festivals, along with mainstream ones.

I think you read into my comment wrong, so I just though I would clarify myself. I agree with you, and said basically the same thing you said. You are basically repeating what I said, only with a more in depth response.
