View Full Version : As Cities Burn has broken up
As Cities Burn has broken up. We are happily moving on after 6 good years. Our lives and our wives have called us in different directions. Thanks to anyone who has come out to a show, had words to say, or bought a cd to help us fill the tank.
It was officially announced on july 15.
Sad, that they have decided to break up after releasing 2 stunning albums.

I used to say bands were awful all the time. I then took a nice hiatus from ap and realized that it was childish and not uplifting for anyone. and revamped my mind set on music and this site. I know where you are both coming from, and I know I've seen togepi argue this til I'm sure his fingers fell off. But music is subjective to the listener.

enjoyment is subjective. there are plenty of objective standards with which to judge all art. if there weren't, all english, art, music, and drama majors would be wasting their money.

We are truly alone.
'Cause God ain't up in the sky,

Remember we used to speak.
Now I'm starting to think,
Your voice was really my own,
Bouncing off the ceiling back to me.
God, this can't be.
God, this can't be,
God, could it be that all we see is it?
Come down, heaven.
Won't you come down?
Won't you cut through the clouds?
Won't you come down?
Oh, my heaven, why do you have doors to close?
Do you have clouds to stop his voice on the way down?
God, this can't be.
God, this can't be,
God, could it be that all we see is it?
Is this it?
God, does grace reach to this side of madness?
'Cause I know this can't be,
The great peace we all seek.
Come down, heaven.
Won't you come down?
Won't you cut through the clouds?
Won't you come down?
Did your clouds stop his voice?
And brother have you found the great peace that we all seek?
You say take a look around.

You must've been pretty fucking awesome as a fifteen year old if you were speculating that God's voice was your own bouncing off the ceiling.
Also, pretty rad that a Christian band ends their song thinking that God must be asleep, you won't be seeing that everyday. That song is simplistic lyrically and I love it, it's just honest. He wants to know why God is so far away and he's not overcomplicating it with metaphors or whatever literary element you were hoping for.
They're steady, steady breathers,
Who won't lift a finger for the gasping weaker.
You just hoard your hollow completion,
Like it's something wearing thin.
Like it's gonna get you in, When heaven comes.
Love it.

you really need to listen to more music if you really think that. also, metaphors don't overcomplicate lyrics; they're what make lyrics beautiful. also, brah man had plenty of metaphors. they were just cliche.

I don't have a problem with metaphors in music obviously, I said I enjoy the simplistic nature of that song.

I for one will definately miss acb and one of my favorite things about them were their lyrics and how emotive Cody sings them.
Clouds is an excellent example.
Come Now Sleep will always be in my top albums ever. I'm not a deeply religious person, but this album resonates on so many levels.
Haha, I am not religious either, I think spiritual would be a better word for that band.
I think our God isn't God if he fits inside our heads.

That lyric is just so true. Cameron in a House episode said something similar, "If there is a higher power, it will be far more complex than anything or minds can imagine" or something along those lines. And that was in Season two, back when House was ridiculously awesome. Now it's just awesome.
I too, am not religious, but I love Cody's lyrics, battling with the doubts about God, then the "I think I'd rather believe in some imaginary place, made up to make children behave, so our souls are safe."
I've been on a bit of an ACB bender today, Daughter has been on near constant repeat.

ACB were from Louisiana, were you in ACB?
I dont think you have to be religious to enjoy ACB's powerful lyrics.
It sucks that I just got really into them last month and now they're breaking up.
I always thought they were some shitty pop punk band that was just another horrible band tooth and nail had on their roster.
After hearing hell or high water, I instantly turned and now its almost all that i listen to. Everything about their music is inspirational and amazing. To bad I can never see them live. :(

I was meaning to buy Hell or High Water. Once I heard they broke up, it reminded me I needed to get it. I absolutely love this album. I'm actually really surprised at all the negative comments about this band. I think there is a huge difference between a "terrible or awful" band and a band you don't like. You can not like this band and that's respectable, but to say that these guys don't have talent is a huge stretch!
There are bands that I don't like but I don't think they are terrible (Kings of Leon). Bands like BrokeNCYDE are terrible bands because they just don't have the talent there. They might have personal talent, but its not being expressed through the music they put out. Their music makes me not enjoy them but it is their lack of talent and horrible lyrics that makes me consider them a terrible band.
I love ACB lyrics on HOHW, though its the only album I've heard from them, I cannot see how you would think the lyrics are terrible. Is this by comparison to other lyricists or is your standard of excellence just really set that high? I'll agree that a lot of the lyrics can be repetitive and cliche but their are some real gems that make these songs brilliant to me.
