Canada has the highest online music piracy rate per capita in the world (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117939142?categoryid=19&cs=1&nid=2570).

I find it ironic because the RIAA gets all of the attention, does all the lawsuits, etc., and no one pays attention to Canada

I find it ironic because the RIAA gets all of the attention, does all the lawsuits, etc., and no one pays attention to Canadathat's because canada ALLOWS the downloading so it's expected. so that doesn't make it in anyway ironic.

fine. maybe my sense of humor and my irony-meter is a little too fine-tuned. i have an odd sense of humor. i'll take out the word 'ironically". happy?
yeah...i dont find it ironic, seeing as it's legal, but thanks anyways paul. you're still cute, don't worry.

when i said irony, i meant it relative to the RIAA/lawsuits/controversy, not relative to canadian laws and what not. oh well.

what does the RIAA have to do with Canada? And they don't pay attention to Canada because we're less than one tenth of the US market. We couldn't even use the itunes music store for at least a year after it came out in the US. No one cares.
The laws will probably change in the next few years, but I really can't see the Canadian government suing people. We're not as lawsuit-happy up here.
Its becuase it makes it legal for me to download any artists hardworking work in a matter of 10 minutes becuase im a canadian asshole like that. But hey, at the end of the day our beer is still alot better than yours.

yeah, it used to be like that, but another court ruling stopped that tax. Ipods used to cost more too, and when they got rid of the law you could apply for a rebate to get the tax money back.
Yea, my download-to-buy ratio is probably 2000:1. Oh well.
Tsk tsk. Ehhh, I'm about a 2:1. I spend more money on music than food or clothing though.

We have accents? (Well, other than the French of course, maybe even newfie accents)
I ran into this over the new years break, a bunch of american's wouldn't believe i was from ontario because I didn't have a "Canadian" accent. I don't get it. (I was in quebec, by the way).

Yeah, I seriously don't understand how Americans think Canadians have accents.
Newfie accents are damn annoying though, no offence to anyone from Newfound Land.

To Americans, Lacking a drawl = having an accent.
All kidding aside, I do notice that in Ontario it's pretty minor, but out west and out east it is FAR more noticeable.

just out of curiousity, is anyone else in here banned from canada or am i the only one?
Burning Star IV
03/08/06, 08:31 PM
i think that is because, at least in my case, Canada has many more remote and rural areas than in the United States that don't have the access to large retail stores or indepedently owned stores... and because it's still legal in Canada

This is really nice to hear. I bet its even nicer for the Artists who are trying to make a living by making music. Downloading songs for free is wrong, no matter if its a metallica song or an up and coming band. Breaking into a millionares home to steal a bike is still a crime. Same thing with music piracy.
when i said irony, i meant it relative to the RIAA/lawsuits/controversy, not relative to canadian laws and what not. oh well.

Copyright infringement is not theft.
Theft relies on you to deprive someone of something. Copyright infringement doesn't.
