I have been a pirates fan for many many years..not long enough to remember them ever having a shot at a winning season..but long enough. Regardless, I am just curious on what everyboyd thinks of their chances this year. I think they will do well.

destined for 5th place I think. Brewers are a step ahead and the Cubs & Astros will be better for pitching reasons, alone. It's the best division in the NL I think, so I wouldnt expect them to win more than 70-75 games.

fixed.
last year they were about .500 at the break. thats been the closest theyve gotten since theyve had bonds and bonilla. i enjoy going to the games though thats the best thing about this team, low ticket prices. i do not enjoy it when they get rid of my favorite players though. i wish they wouldve kept redman for one more year, he's a lot better than that. he always had no offense when he pitched, i witnessed two of his starts.

I think they will fair much better than they have the past few seasons. Regardless of where they end up in the division, i expect more wins than usual.
For the past few years their win totals has been increasing but last year it plummeted back down lol

losing wells hurts because pitching was already pretty thin. there is too much pressure on zach duke to be a phenom i think, and oliver perez needs to have a big year. there are just too many questions and holes to expect more than 70 wins I think.

82-80 would be like winning a World Series for this team.

Redman sucked. I'd rather have a young guy prove himself. They were in the playoff race in 1998 with a $9 million payroll.

i think they can pull off about 75-80 wins. i think they'll have a strong first half. then really turn up the suck in the second half.
i'll still follow them though and make as many games as i can.
if they'd go back to the old school early 90's jerseys my life would be complete.

Pirates? Maybe they'll do alright..but nowhere near the World Series. I'd say about 75-85 wins is about where they'll be at.

Made some good moves, but nothing that will get them higher than a 5th spot in the central. They more pitching and could use a big bat besides Bay. Their best bet is to follow the road of Oakland and Cleveland, use sabremetrics style of analyzing to develop talent in the minor. Buy low, sell high.

I don't see them do any better then last year. I always have high hopes and then they are brought down. If this team stays .500 it will be a blessing.
They'll get rid of Sean Casey at the tradeline for sure.
I still love The Pirates, I just wish they'd pay back the fans once in awhile.

Hah, I wish you knew what you were talking about.
However, your Mets have a good chance to beat out The Braves this year. I know it's been awhile, but I'm gonna keep my eye on them.

I never said they would suck. I just said they'd do alright. They'll probably do better than the Astros. The Astros Lineup is average and they don't have Clemens anymore.
I think the Mets are going to do well too, but the Braves just don't lose the East. Even when they suck, they still win it.

The Pirates will suck is what I am saying. I just wish you were correct about wining 85 games.
I guess your right about The Braves. But I can see The Mets beating them out in the playoffs atleast. I just feel like The Mets are a better team then The Braves this year.

If the Mets won the East and lost in the first round of the playoffs, I'd still be happy. Winning the East is like bringing down a tyrant. The Braves just don't lost. Haha. The Mets usually sign people who turn out to be busts, but with this lineup..we'll do really well. It's the pitching I'm iffy about.

this could easily (and should be) in the MLB Discussion thread. we need a rule. only championship contenders can have their own thread. this is ridiculous. i'm not making threads about how the tigers are going to be battling the royals for 2nd to last in the AL Central. ridiculous.

Everyone is a championship contender until the season starts. I say let the Pirates fans discuss.

Ya, there is too much Red Sox/Yankess/Bonds going on.

I've been saying they'll win about 75-85 games and I think they will. It's gonna be really tough being in the best division in baseball but we can do it. Bay's gonna just be even better this year. Pitching has a ton of potential.
We just need a big bat behind Bay in the hitting, like someone else said. Regardless of how they do this season, I'll still go to a bunch of games and go to the All-Star game/HR Derby. Bay better not be shitty as fuck this time.

I don't know if I would call the NL Central the best league, or say their pitching has tons of potential. They could definitely be good this year, but they're using a lot of young guys in the rotation. However, you are absolutely right about Bay. They need another bat behind him. Casey will work well in the #2 slot, but after Bay, they don't have much.

yeah, I think all 3 AL divisions are better to be honest. I know that sounds bias because I'm a Sox fan, but the AL is really loaded this year. New York, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Oakland and Anaheim are obvious ..but then you have the potential rise of Texas, Toronto, and Minnesota. Thats 9 teams.
The NL Central is the king of the NL though. It has the potential to be better than any of the AL leagues if all 5 teams (excluding Cincy) exceed expectations, but on paper it's gotta be all AL.
