Will a 16 seed ever beat an 1 seed in the NCAAs?

that's the kind of thing i'd have trouble attatching a 'never' to. it's not a very likely thing, but definitely a possibility.

i doubt it. unless there was one REALLY weak year in basketball where the top 5 teams had like 5+ losses? - But then again, how likely is that?

I know, I was thinking about this in the shower, how no 16 has ever won. It's like the only "never happened" in all of sports.

The Arizona Cardinals have "never" been good.

There's another never happened.

yeah, i think it will. there were games last year that were close enough that you never know. look at duke...if reddick goes down and williams got in foul trouble in the 2nd half of a fiesty team...anything could happen.

that said, when it does happen, it might not again for 100 years.

i think if oral roberts is a 16 seed this year, they could put up a good fight.

and.

id love to see it happen, but you know if it did everyones brackets would be fucked.

It'll happen, and hopefully its Duke who loses. I'm bitter about today, kinda.

No, the talent differential is just too great. You'll see 1 seeds come out completely unfocused and get down, but once they realize they need to play hard, and do, the game is over. You can have all the desire and adrenaline in the world, but over 40 minutes, it's not going to make up for the difference.

it has happened in the women's tourney...but then again women's basketball is digusting to watch.

Women's basketball doesn't count in real life.

I think the only team it could happen with this year is Memphis.

That's my #1 dilemma. I have bad feelings about Oral Roberts. They seem like a total bracket buster. Memphis could blow it, they were the only #1 seed who I felt could lose to Oral Roberts if they were a 16, which they are.

It could very well happen this year, right now i'm 50-50 on it. Even if it doesn't happen this year, it will eventually happen someday in history. a One seeded team will blow it against a 16 seed sooner than later.

I feel bad for the 16s playing Duke/UConn and 'Nova, those guys are gonna beat some people up.

GREAT "math" article kind of on this subject.

Near misses: Purdue 73, Western Carolina 71 (1996). Michigan State 75, Murray State 71 OT (1990). Oklahoma 72, East Tennessee State 71 (1989). Georgetown 50, Princeton 49 (1989). (Tiger partisans still insist Alonzo Mourning's last-second block was a foul.)
