View Full Version : Future of Rock & Roll Hall of Fame

I've thought about this for a good long time now, at some point in the next decade or two, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (Whether you really think it means anything or not), is going to have to induct in the new generation of bands, and recognize the new genres as well,
I mean, they're going to have to run out of the classic rock bands and such eventually here, and they'll be faced with the Blink 182's, The Green Day's, The Bad Religion's of the music scene of today.
So, who do you honestly think is going to get into the hall when the new wave of bands come up?

I've been wondering this too. Some more recent bands who I wouldn't be surprised about:
Radiohead
Green Day
Oasis
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Weezer (debated putting this one on here since they've released so much shit)
Coldplay (ugh)
off the top of my head.
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll.
The Foundation’s nominating committee, composed of rock and roll historians, selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 500 rock experts. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.
That was from the R&R HoF site. I'm guessing if no one is important enough, no one gets in.
EDIT: this was more to help the debating in this pole so we can leave bands that are useless now out of the conversation.

Well SOMEONE has to get in, they can't just have 20 year gaps all over the place.
They did try to induct the Sex Pistols a few years back, so they're seeing Punk as being something, which is cool.
But hopefully they'll update it into Bad Religion and such, because I personally think that without BR so many bands wouldn't be here today,
Though, I expect Green Day to get in pretty quickly after elgibility, I hope to god that they don't induct Nickleback or Hinder or any of those disgusting "bands", personally.
I don't even want to think about this. so many shit undeserving bands will get in. it's gonna be even more awful then it already is.

Does anyone see any Pop-Punk going in?
ie: NFG, Blink. etc.
I mean, just those two bands right there have been so crucial to music in today's scene, i mean, we've all seen the influence in all these bands that are getting pretty huge nowadays, they all cite Blink and usually NFG a lot too.
Though, I don't know what that would actually mean to The Hall of Fame, honestly.

I also expect Green Day to get in pretty easily after they're eligible (2015 I think would be the year?). I'd be pretty much will to guarantee Nickelback and Hinder won't get in though.

Haha, maybe they just should retire to hall of fame (seriously).

I doubt either one will get in. Blink has a better chance than NFG, but that's not saying much.

Hopefully they make good choices on that.

Nirvana is probably the only band mentioned in this thread so far that will get in. Blink's influence on music is exaggerated on this site.

Just because you don't like Blink doesn't mean they're not deserving, imo. I know a lot of bands who have said Blink is one of their main influences. Not necessarily amazing bands that have said that, but ones with a decent sized fanbase who are well-known now.
And as for Fall Out Boy, I don't know. They are just extremely famous and have a huge fanbase, but as for changing and influence... I'm not sure. There's only a few bands who have said FOB was an influence, and most people who say that now are pretty young and their bands haven't really gotten out there yet. But with time that claim might have more legitimacy to it. But as of now, I don't think they should be.
Coldplay and Radiohead are locks. Anything else is a toss-up.

That's what I'm thinking in terms of Blink,
the voters won't see what we see, the talent that band possesses, they'll just remember them running naked down the streets of LA in 1999.

Everyone I'd expect has already been mentioned, but to sift through the crap...
Nirvana

Green Day
Radiohead
(hopefully) Bad Religion
Those are really the only ones who have had the necessary longevity or influence on specific genres.

I'd be surprised if you don't make it into the Absolutepunk.net Hall of Fame for "Achievements in Recognizing Who Has Hall of Fame-Worthy Talent", because you are just knocking it out of the park with your incessant pushing of Blink. Here's what your plaque will look like:

(Sarcastic, of course. Blink doesn't even deserve place on your CD shelf, much less a place in the Hall of Fame. I mean, COME ON (http://comeonrap.ytmnd.com/).)

Meh, there are still a lot of good artists from the 00's who may be deserving of a spot. Arcade Fire, Will Oldham, Devendra Banhart, The Flaming Lips, Grizzly Bear, The Microphones, Sigur Rós, Sufjan, TV On The Radio, etc., are all good enough talent-wise, but probably won't make it unless it becomes "The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Presented By Pitchfork".

Well I know the most undeserving band to get in will be Green Day. I know they will probably be first on the list to get in and I will hate it. They play the same 3 chords over and over and over and over and over. Know Your Enemy is possibly the worst composition I've ever heard. But aside from them some other that will definately be considered are.....
1. Nirvana
2. Foo Fighters
3. R.H.C.P.
4. RUSH (They are seriously one of the best overall bands talent-wise ever)
Drawing blanks for more right now....
Oh yes and Radiohead.
I personally am I big Creed fan and think they deserve consideration.
Possibly Bad Religion because of how influential they were to the punk movement.
Nickleback will eventually be in even though most of you hate them. But the fact is they are probably the most popular rock band of this decade.

i think for the most part, the rock and roll hall of fame is more about popularity than the actual quality of the music itself. granted, there ARE artists in there that were/are both immensely popular and great at what they do, but there are some that are just absolute shit. i have a feeling 10/20 years down the road, there will be some AWFUL acts inducted, simply because they had their 5 year window of being a huge deal

After Nirvana, Creed was the face of the grunge rock era. Am I saying their musicianship is amazing, no.
I certainly hope Nickelback doesn't get in, I fucking hate them, but they have a chance, you can't deny that.
And I will never understand why anyone listens to Green Day after the American Idiot CD. Before that they were a pretty good punk band, but after that CD everything they have made has been absolute shit.

Creed was the face of mainstream modern rock and a perfect example of how watered down and shitty grunge had become. That won't get them in the hall of fame.
Nickelback won't get in.
Green Day were never really "punk", at least not when they had their popularity. And American Idiot and 21st Century are far from absolute shit. Both are solid to great pop rock albums with some of the best singles the radio saw in the past ten years, and even if Green Day fans will always prefer the Dookie days, those two records were still A) better than the vast majority of the garbage that got any mainstream success in the past ten years, and B) better than a lot of the talentless pop rock bands that sometimes get attention on this site.
