John Lydon of the Sex Pistols has spoken out (http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/ap/20060311/114211884000.html) at the "harassing fans" who threw bottles at the band at a Danish music festival.

Here is what bothers me about the Sex Pistols:

1) They were technically, by modern definition, a boy band. They were put together by Malcom McLaren (sp?). He wanted to use them to promote his goods that he sold at his S&M store called Sex.

2) They were around for such a short time. They put out one album which was not all that great.

3) Johnny Rotten (John Lyden) is a tool. The guy acts like he owns the world but he is just a has been.

Yes, I know all you kids will probably say, "But without them there would be no punk" but the truth is punk existed before them with bands like the MC5, The Stooges, Velvet Underground. Yes, they pioneered that 3 chord, snotty punk sound but to be honest I would rather listen to bands like the Ramones or the Clash who played enjoyable songs and knew somewhat how to play their instruments (in the Clash's case knew damn well how to play).

Dude, I couldn't agree more. I don't understand the hype about this band. There are so many talented bands out there. I don't beleive The Sex Pistols are musically talented. They got where they were simply by starting a rebelion.

Unbelievable.
I'd never have thought it would be possible for the Sex Pistols to be judged so easily and finally by three kids who aren't even old enough to have any real idea about them or their history or impact.
Whose next for the jury? Dylan? Garcia? Jagger? Mcartney? Kramer?

"pioneers" or not, they are a bunch of douche bags. johnny rotten still thinks he's 18 years old, it seems like he gets more and more pissed off with how little people care about what he says anymore. nothing he does shocks people, so he gets pissed.

This is just a silly assumption. You haven't even made the effort to back it up your statement either. Johnny Rotten is just bitter because he's still stuck in the 70's and can't accept that music and society have moved on.

this is the least informative article i've ever read on anything, it contains a few clips of statements from him all about vastly different things.

anyway, if you play a festival show and don't expect to get nailed with a few hundred bottles you are kidding yourself.

I am American...I am also a music major and took a class on music history. The Sex Pistols album came out in what year? Oh that's right -1977. The Velvet Underground, The Stooges, and The MC5 all came along before the Sex Pistols were even put together. Yes there may have been British bands that played at that time but I was naming 3 off the top of my head. I know you are saying the Sex Pistols started the whole rebellion - no future and whatnot - but they would not have even been formed had Malcom McLaren not seen the New York Dolls and thought to put a band together (that is in every history of punk book and movie...do some research).

Also, please don't bring the fact that i am American into this. That has nothing to do with anything. I never once said punk was invented here and if you read close enough I even said I prefer the Clash over the Sex Pistols who are, get ready for this, British.

I will not argue this any further. It is as stupid as leaving nude pics on your sidekick. It doesn't change the fact that Johnny Rotten is a prick, in the public eye (I don't know him personally), and that I don't think the Sex Pistols were all that good.

Actually buddy, I'm 22. I think that I am old enough to have viewed what happened in the past and form an opinion about it.

I have studied this stuff for my major and in my spare time because punk history interests me. I am judging them because, as stated, they were put together. Did Bob Dylan have Malcom McLaren telling him every thing to do? Were the Grateful Dead formed by some store owner who wanted to cash in? No. All that goes for Jagger, McCartney and Kramer.

So don't go making assumptions about me just because my opinion doesn't agree with what everyone thinks about a band because in the end that is all the Sex pistols were: a band.

If you want to play the history game, shall we bring up the fact that New Yorker Legs McNeil is credited with the coining of the word 'punk' in pertaining to a certain type cultural lifestyle when he began a little zine called PUNK in 1975 (some say critic Dave Marsh did in 71)? Also, the Ramones formed a year before the Sex Pistols ('74) despite not releasing a self-titled full album until '76. Not that no one under the pond didn't do anything, but life existed before the Sex Pistols, douche monkey.

I agree with you except i find the Ramones to be over rated

I never cared for the Pistols but i love to hear this guy shoot his mouth off i'd love to hear what he said about Animal Activists and the Pro Choice

I could learn a lot from you. I've always been interested in the history of "punk" music and have read a couple books on it.

i'm glad someone else has some sense on this website, the sex pistols were the biggest joke to ever arise from punk rock. they did nothing original, they did nothing spectacular, the did nothing that matters. they did not invent the "look" they had, the spiky messed up hair and torn clothing was brought on by richard hell, not these pricks.

The Sex Pistols were amazing and people need to stop bashing them. Especially on a site full of Taking Back Sunday/Brand New/Thursday fanboys. I'd take the Sex Pistols over Velevt Underground, MC5 or the Stooges anyday. They just sound better. Sure, they were put together by Malcolm McLaren- but he had no input on their music. And their music is what I love about them. Its stripped down, raw, catchy rock n roll. Period.

Part of the reason they were so popular is because some of the members were pretty damn good looking.
