Pull the Pin - Anyone in the Universe...Other Than Me
Record Label: Masquerade Recordings
Release Date: July 7, 2009
Pull the Pin is a three piece pop-punk band from Pennsylvania who stay away from auto-tune and synth, and even the "in" and "scene" haircuts. As I am sure many haven't heard of the band, I'll give some quick background. Pull the Pin formed in 2006, and then they have toured extensively, spending a few summers on the Warped Tour, and have been on tour with The Ataris, Just Surrender, Patent Pending, Red Car Wire, and more. They've recorded two previous EP's, An Army of Four and The War at Home. Since then, the band has lost a few members, and finally completed their lineup for Anyone in the Universe...Other Than Me with Rob Felicetti (Vocals/guitar), Corey Devincenzo (Bass), and Brad Beneski (Drums).
Anyone in the Universe...Other Than Me starts with a song called "A Place Like Home." Right from the start, you can tell that Pull the Pin isn't just another auto-tuned hair-cut band full of synths and Garage Band effects. Once Rob's vocals hit, it completes it; real vocals without evidence of auto-tune. The songs themselves sound like something you would have heard five years ago with bands like Allister, The Ataris, or blink-182. In fact, the third song, "Forever and a Day" seems to pull tons of influence from blink. The chord progression, intro, and riffs feel like they could have easily come out of a blink-182 song off of Enema of the State. The vocals complete the sound yet again.
The lyrics stick to the basics of most pop-punk music, focusing on relationships. Mostly, the lyrics discuss losing love and still being in love with the lost girl, proving that the songs follow the theme of the EP title. All of the songs flow together well, and none of them seem out of place or just put into the album as filler.
Anyone in the Universe...Other Than Me is a solid EP by a great pop-punk band. It's rare at this day that you find a three piece band who actually really try, stick to their roots, and don't give in to the neon fad. And that's exactly what makes Pull the Pin great. If you want a band that sounds the same live as they do in the studio, and are a fan of solid pop-punk music backed by passion and instruments rather than the auto-tune and fake synth beats, check out Anyone in the Universe...Other Than Me.
