Wow, apparently some people just can't get over the fact (http://articles.news.aol.com/special3/article.adp?id=20060314180209990003 &ncid=AOLMOV00150000000007) that Crash won best picture. What a bitch.

1) Fuck the Oscars.
2) Contrary to popular belief, the Oscars are not the best of the best. The true best films are often competely overlooked by the Oscars. The winner for best picture is never the ACTUAL best picture of the year. (The real best picture isn't even nominated most years.)
3) Crash IS a really good film. It's really rare that I actually like a Best Picture winner.
4) I don't think the person who wrote the story on which the film is based is the most reliable judge as to whether the film deserves the Oscar. Might be a slight bias, there, I'm not sure.
I haven't seen Brokeback, but all the whining about it not winning Best picture has turned me off from actually wanting to see it. From the get go it seemed like it was a prestige flick made solely to win Oscars. Fuck that shit. Ang Lee is a good director, (worth noting that he was the first non-white man to win Best Director, but you don't see Proulx commenting on anything like that,) but any interest I had in seeing that film is continually diminishing the more I hear people whine about it being "robbed".
So yeah, fuck her and her short story. She needs to grow the fuck up and learn that not winning isn't the end of the world.

what a joke. what i hate the most is that it got to the point where if Brokeback didn't when something, everybody cried homophobe. this is just hysteria. i was one of many people who found Crash to be the better picture and most deserving. the only reason it was an upset is because of the media hype that Brokeback gained. it's silly.
In my opinion it really deserved the Best Film award. It was an incredible film, however Brokeback Montain was a bit boring and slow for me.

i know. this woman has won the pulitzer. she should be ashamed. i think this dissertation was longer than the actual short story itself.
btw** has anybody ever read brokeback mountain? if you get the chance you should. not that its good or bad. just interested in seeing what everybody thought about it. i personally couldn't get into it. and it was over as soon as it started. i dunno...

wow that was childish, but Brokeback Mountain was still alot better than Crash. Crash doesnt touch it at all but eh its ok. I enjoyed Crash. I bought it. Ill buy Brokeback Mountain as well. But there is no denying that Brokeback Mountain is the better film. King Kong and Walk The Line were also better than Crash.

I want to know exactly what makes Brokeback so worthy of Best Picture. I haven't seen it. Someone sell it to me. From what I can gather right now, it's basically a love story with two dudes instead of a male and a female. What's so special about it?
what i hate the most is that it got to the point where if Brokeback didn't when something, everybody cried homophobe.
Yeah, no kidding. Nevermind the fact that Philip Seymour Hoffman won Best Actor for playing TRUMAN FUCKING CAPOTE! Idiots.

Titanic was a stunning directing achievment. a masterpiece in filmmaking. as banal as the dialogue was, the film was brought to life with great perfromances and some pretty vivid recreation. better than L.A. Confidential? depends on who you ask. i personally would've given the edge to LA Confidential that year.

But no way, artistically speaking, is it anywhere close to being a masterpiece. It was too long, and far too dull.
Haha, that was fucking hilarious. Not only does she bitch about Brokeback not winning because the Academy are out of touch with America, but she rants about the awards themselves, Crash and the film's studio! This only makes me want to see Brokeback less.
Brokeback was good. I though it deserved the Oscars it won. However I didn't think it was the best film released last year. Was Crash? It was great, but a watered down and defrogged version of Magnolia. AS was stated before the Oscar doesn't usually go to the best movie released, if it did Forrest Gump wouldnt have beat Shawshank Redemption

That's not really a good example. That year was a total toss up because Forrest Gump was an amazing movie as well as Shawshank.

neither would have beaten Quiz Show
...or Pulp Fiction
...or Four Weddings And A Funeral
Shawshank Redemption was over-8-ted
Forrest Gump was good(scatterbrained, surfaced, but good), and it had the Blockbuster tag. plus Tom Hanks gave the best performance that year. i guess it kind of deserved to win.
what did you think was the best picture last year?

sorry man, you've said a lot of dumbass things, but you can't back any of this up. i took it straight from the horses mouth. you've got Larry McMurtry, Ang Lee(FYI, that's the director and the screenwriter), even his wife griping about how Hollywood simply won't recognize this film as the best picture because of the homosexual content. oh yeah and about every other critic who didn't pick Crash to win it to begin with. here's a source (http://rogerebert.suntimes.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060306/OSCARS/603070301). the only thing your proving with your rant is sour grapes.
yes this movie was beautiful...to the few people that saw it. this movie was nothing but surfaced hype about gay cowboys. you're an idiot to think otherwise. All the critical reviews in the world couldn't have reversed the homosexual powertrain this movie was packing. just look at the box office tally. just shy of $83 million domestic and more then 20% of it in the last two weeks. nobody saw the damn movie until it was decried as the biggest upset in Oscar history. hell it wasn't even wide release until late january. everybody knew it didn't matter though, except for you i guess. this movie was boiling in the media long before anybody was even thinking limited release. this film is getting the biggest oscar backlash ever. Saving Private Ryan supporters weren't close to have this rage. and it certainly wasn't because it was THAT much better than crash. i need an aspirin...

maybe I was a little hostile, and I apologize for that. but I do not think GAY COWBOYS when I think Brokeback Mountain, and honestly, I dont agree with you that you think that thats what its about. alright, so i was hostile too. i certainly don't think that Brokeback Mountain is about gay cowboys either. it was a sincerely beautiful movie. my only argument is that the buzz started too early and not enough people saw it to garner any other kind of buzz, than the gay cowboy buzz. i guess im saying nobody gave this movie a chance initially, so it couldn't have possibly been gaining any hype based on it's critical merit, and this knee jerk reaction from the media is ridiculous.

It is extremely shallow. Deal with it.
Seriously. Even if it is a moving love story about forbidden love, why would that be appealing to most the market of America anyway? Answer: It wouldn't. No man would want to see that unless he was bent, and they would instantly write it off as a chick flick.
The fact that this was about two gay men obviously hyped the film a lot. Too much if you ask me, since I don't care if they are gay, but whatever. I know several men who watched this film out of curiousity, and I can bet most of them will say it's because of the gay relationship.

when this movie was making the rounds at the film festivals and starting to genrate buzz, everyone was saying, "heath ledger and jake gyllenall are playing gay cowboys in this new movie called brokeback mountain" not "this brokeback mountain movie is a love story" so to say this movie wasn't hyped as a gay cowboy movie is insane
