I for one will be bitter forever about "Crash" winning best picture at the Oscars.

If fact, I may never watch them again..."Crash" getting best picture is on par with Marisa Tomei winning.

Brokeback was a milestone and way too emotionally engaging to lose to a sloppy mess like "Crash".

I had no interest in seeing Brokeback Mountain. It did not appeal to me whatsoever. I enjoyed Crash. I thought it was a very good film. I'm glad it won.

Yeah but if you were the writer of the short story, would you have released that sloppy shit storm against the academy? I mean most people won't judge you or I for saying something like that, but that was classless.

i liked crash a lot. i'm glad it won best picture.

i could care less about the oscars though. they lost me when when they went with shakespeare in love over saving private ryan.

Brokeback Mountain was immensly good and deserving of its nods.

however, it seemed more like a rough draft of a good movie. it started off so good, but proceeded to wallow in this needless melodrama. the ending was too obvious and obligatory to have as much emotional pact as the conclusion could have. performances were exceptional(Gyllenhaal was miscast to an extent. that moustache was a joke too), the direction was great. while i thought the music was intrusive, its simplicity complimented the film well at times. But at the roots of these great performances was a story that was made all to conventional by it's decent but unincredible script. i doubt that Annie Proulx's characters would have to resort to such lines as "I wish I knew how to quit you"

i don't know how you could consider Crash a sloppy mess. Ludracis was woefully miscast, and the writing at times was over the top(like it should have been) but the editing was genious. the performances were incredible, and the scenes themselves were so brilliantly shot and calculated by Haggis. The scene between Dillon and Newton is unforgettable, and Michael Pena's supporting role was as down to earth and touching as anything that came out this year.

now im really playing good and evil with these two movies. they were both great. hell i was just as emotionally involved in Munich, and it was arguably the most well executed of the films(that's another debate) but it's a far cry from an upset or Marisa Tomei's win for that matter(that's nonsense)

yeah...and personally, i thought marissa tomei was amazing...here were the other nominees, you decide:

Judy Davis in Husbands and Wives
Joan Plowright in Enchanted April
Vanessa Redgrave in Howards End
Miranda Richardson in Damage

now you tell me if you remember ANY of those performances.

Tomei was good, but if you saw any of these you would know it was a blunder. Miranda Richardson's performance in Damage was incredible, as was both davis' and Redgrave's as well

okay so i was thinking about what you said and i knew i would think of something

A Few Good Men. no scene more memorable than Jack Nicholson's performance in the courtroom climax. or Jaye Davidson showing his wang in the Crying Game. both scenes were far more memorable than anything Gene Hackman did in Unforgiven, but he still gave the best performance of the nominees. does that make sense? i guess if you don't agree on hackman, then we're still not getting anywhere. i dunno.

The same cannot be said for brokeback and Crash.

I can see why some might dislike things about those movies.

preposterous. to say that it is easier to dislike an Ang Lee or paul haggis film than a david cronenberg movie is absurd.

You're being a fool, AHOV is brilliant in every sense of the word. This goes much deeper than the director of the film my friend.

Brokeback confronts social issues....as does Crash, AHOV is a STORY about a mans past. There are no difficult everyday issues bogging it down, unless you're a mobster. Hence my point.

right but there is a famliarity in which stories such as Brokeback Mountain and Crash are told. A formula, if you will, in moviemaking. AHOV techniques and storytelling are anything but old fashioned(brutal violence, casual graphic sex, intentionally melodramatic dialogue). the film(aside from it's final shot) was a borderline Lynchian experience. not all people can appreciate that as much as the can appreciate old fashioned(gritty as it might be) drama. were you shocked that AHOV wasn't nominated for picture. even if it was, i can't think that you'd be surprised that it lost out to movies more easily accessbile like...any of the other nominated films.

I had an very conserative Uncle who hated movies that had anythign to do with Homosexuality. He couldnt even enjoy Best in Show becasue of the gay couple. My sister works at a BB in a white consertive neighborhood and she said about 1/3 of the people who rent Crash return it after only getting about 15 minutes into it.
