Biography
After only a year of existence, Ambulance for Angeles has a story that could fill a novel; a story of success, grief, and the drive of an artist to realize his and his departed partner’s musical dreams. AFA began in August of 2004. Mat and Jonas (formerly of Stealing Serenity) had a common goal of producing a fresh new indie sound, something different. At first the sound was more of a melodic post-hardcore, but soon the music found its foundation in the cold succinct beauty of the piano. AFA collectively wrote a handful of songs in the new genre of “indie piano” and decided it was time to release the material to the masses for review. After a few months, the AFA PureVolume.com and the MySpace.com site had both received thousands upon thousands of plays. The buzz went beyond Spokane (AFA’s hometown). Early interest had been expressed by indie labels and label management. However, just as things were beginning to gel the band was faced with a tragic loss. Band member Jonas Teater died due to an accidental drug overdose.
This left the group with one remaining permanent member, Mat Wisner. Mat was heartbroken over the loss of Jonas and considered giving it all up. However, after much soul searching it became clear that he must continue. AFA’s songs were the team effort of both members and if they lived on, then in a sense, the memory of Jonas would live on as well. Wisner continued to play with a new found fire.
AFA self released their first EP, “I’m Atlantic” in May 2005. The EP and supporting shows received stunning press:
"Ambulance for Angeles- people who take the word emotion to a level we couldn't possibly imagine"-The Inlander
"one of the most powerful performances of my life... a band that has changed music for me a little bit"- MSNBC.com (in response to live show in seattle)
“The Viking” and “Drugs and Drama” are strong enough songs to get this band signed to the biggest labels in the known world- Redefine Magazine
AFA’s music doesn’t derive its power from volume; it derives its power from its stark reality. It is not music that creates the illusion of life, it is life. The past has been tragic for AFA, but the future looks bright. AFA has had the pleasure of sharing the stage with bands such as Vendetta Red, Kane Hodder, The Divorce, Schoolyard Heroes, Still Life Projector, and The Static Age. AFA is now relocated in Seattle and are playing local/regional shows as they lead up to their LP release slated for Summer 06.
