View Full Version : Using a metronome with a Guitar
So I'm just getting started with using a metronome with my guitar, I've been playing about a year and half now and I'm decent for the amount of time I've put into playing, now my question is if I'm just using a scale to get used to the metronome, am I supposed to strum every time there is a click, or every 4th click to keep with the beat?

It's all relevant dude. It's different for every song

Try tapping your foot with every beat while you're playing... I think that might help you get a better feel for the beat.

Yeah it's really different for every song. And whether you want to strum on every fourth click of the metronome or every click is up to you. For example if you have a song that you find is 180 beats per minute (BPM), your going to also be able to play that song with your metronome set too 90 BPM. You may find that the latter has way too much space between clicks and may be awkward to strum to.
Also if your metronome allows you to set a time signature you may hear a higher click on certain beats. So 4/4 timing you would hear "beep boop boop boop, beep boop boop boop" etc... and at 3/4 timing you would hear "beep boop boop, beep boop boop" etc. So if you are playing a scale while listening to a metronome at 4/4 you would probably strum on every click, unless your bmp is too fast in which you would either adjust your bpm (divide it by 2) or just strum on the higher "beep's".
Sorry if this explanation seemed a bit silly. I wanted to be sure it made sense! Hope this helps.

if you are doing a scale definitely every fourth note. start at a slow tempo and move your way up but definitely every click for a scale. there's no point in holding out whole notes in a scale, that should be all quarter notes.
