And it needs to be bumped, apparently.

I've always meant to get into Zappa.
What's the best album to start out with?

I recently aquired a lot of Zappa's discography and I was wondering what you guys think his best album is. Not to start out with, but in general.

Thread always needs a bump.

Dude has too much music, it's gonna take me awhile to get through it all. I really dig his instrumentation and arrangements but the wacky lyrics are a bit too much. Definitely some kind of maniacal genius though.

It's not all wacky.

I'm sure it isn't but my Zappa knowledge is limited to the greatest hits and a bunch of youtube videos so far. I plan on expanding to more of his discography but I've got so many albums to digest right now as it is. I'll get around to it.

Giving Freak Out! my first listen. Should be interesting.

Excellent decision.

I was thinking about digging out Yellow Shark the other day. Guess it's a sign now.

Said this in the Rolling Stone list thread, but that's prob the best album I never want to listen to again. Super-talented/ingenious, but just didn't make music I want to listen to.

That's quite the assessment, you should give some of his other stuff a shot though. If you like classical music, check out The Yellow Shark or read up on Thing Fish and decide whether you want to dig into that or not. Both are worth reading up on.

Well I have to listen to We're Only in it for the Money for the Rolling Stone list eventually. But I'll look into those, too.

Finally heard We're Only in It for the Money and even more than Freak Out!, it deserves the moniker of "album I think is brilliant in its own, unlistenable way"

I'm a casual fan of Zappa, but what I've hear, I've enjoyed in small doses. I'm sure if I persisted with him, I'd eventually 'get' his music, but at the moment it's all a bit too weird for me.

I fucking love Zappa, genius. Absolute genius
