I personally love the dude, so it was disappointing to see him play in front of a crowd of about twenty people at Maxwell's Monday. Even with it being Monday, that show would've sold out a couple years back.
Either way it was a good show. Photos and videos from it are here, John Nolan @ Maxwell's 7.27.09 (http://thenjunderground.com/blog/2009/7/29/john-nolan-maxwells-72709.html)

The fact that people are asking this question makes me a sad panda.

I'm right there with you (and on both accounts, too).
Honestly, though, I wouldn't expect his solo tour to pack out a place, but 20 people is definitely disappointing. When someone goes on a solo tour it seems a lot of people who follow their bands either don't know it's them or don't really care. Anthony Raneri did a couple of solo shows in FL last month and there were a lot fewer people there than would have been at a Bayside show. Ace Enders is nowhere near as popular as The Early November were, and he still plays some of those songs. I would say that few people means not as many people care as once did, but I don't think a bad showing at a solo show (on basically his first tour) is a sign that nobody cares about him anymore.

the man is one of my heroes. him playing in front of just 20 people is sad. i remember seeing him with straylight at a sold show 5 years ago.
i played with mark rose of spitalfield 2 weeks ago, and his crowd was no more than a dozen people. it made me really sad. :-(

me too, man. i went out of my way to make sure we got to play with him, and then by the end of the show, there weren't even a dozen people there. i got him to play "the only thing that matters" as an encore though & it was pretty much the coolest thing ever haha. we also got to talk to him for an hour about spitalfield, victory, and being in a band in general, and then we helped him carry all his shit inside. it was so much fun. /fanboymoment

I played a show with Nightmare of You in RI once...and aside from the 10 or so people that came for me, there were 2 or 3 people there for NOY. And then the people who came for me left after I played, leaving aboout 5 people left there. This is why Rhode Island sucks.

I saw Straylight headline a show up at State College with Paramore and Plain White T's opening my freshman year (2005). I'm pretty sure it was sold out. I just saw them on their tour with Lovedrug at a smaller club at State College and there were maybe 30 people there.

Yes, I do care about him.. Mainly cos Im from Long Island and I know him. The Long Island solo show last week was sold out. He can still sell... AND BUT because of his time w/ TBS.. in my opinion I think the fact he was in TBS isnt even important after all he has done. I still love Straylight Run... New songs are awesome.. I still need to check out his solo stuff.

I saw SLR at a small club with about 50 people on their tour with Lovedrug or whoever. They put on my favorite show ever. And him and Will and Shaun were all nice as fuck to everyone after as well.
Yeah, Straylight Run was amazing on the SLR, Hot Rod Circuit, Say Anything, Northstar tour in '04.

I saw John Nolan with Mansions last night and it was around 15-20 people. I think the hometown bands that opened had a significantly bigger crowd. Some girls between his songs were saying goodbye to thier friends and John said "Let them say goodbye to each other, then I can start the song." It was kinda rude.
It just seems strange that this guy isn't getting a following. I thanked him for playing Richmond and bought his shirt. It's really nice for 10 bucks too. I really hope he gets some more exposure with his solo stuff. I mean, it's fucking JOHN NOLAN.
Speaking of Nightmare Of You, I went to thier show this week too and they had a very small 10-20 crowd. I know it was a Tuesday night, but damn. They make some pretty awesome music.

Yeah I was just kinda blah on all of them after 2003. I went to a couple of Straylight shows, including the tour with the New Amsterdams (Matt Pryor FTW) the fall after the split, and tried to like them but never really did.
That show did produce one of my favorite memories though. It was Halloween, and one of the guys in the band was dressed up as a giant tampon and had a bunch of tampons attached to him. Midway though the set, Nolan reaches down and pulls one off of the sole of his shoe and exclaimed: "Can't I at least play one show without getting a tampon stuck to the bottom of my shoe?" One of the classic show moments of my life.

They haven't broken up. fall tour is in the plans.Plus, the reason for John going solo was to do something which doesnt fit with SLR.New SLR will sound completely different to Johns solo stuff.

I love how people make it seem like they're broken up. Just because a band isn't touring at the moment or writing a record doesn't mean they're like on hiatus or anything of that sort. They're doing things between records because they feel like it. Everything they do doesn't have to be with SLR.
