even though i hate womens basketball, i could see how a woman dunking would be a big deal..

but then i think that little nate rob is shorter than some of them and he can do a boring, simple dunk without a problem while 95% of the women in basketball who try end up face down on the floor.

I'm pretty sure more then a handful of 5'7" guys have dunked on an empty court before.

Come on, this was the worst thing I've seen on TV today. The "dunks" were weak, and the fact that it never happened before just makes me hate women's basketball even more.

its ok that she dunked, but i think people have to realize that she did it against an Army team that was totally mismatched. Everyone is really impressed that she did it in the half court, but that was because army can't guard tenn, that is why army lost by a ton of points.

everyone says her dunk was weak.

stop comparing it to guys dunks and it wont be.

That shit wasn't even a dunk, I'm sorry. She barely got up enough to touch rim, she couldn't jump at all, it looked really dumb. I am not the least bit impressed. When I see a woman dunk and do more than graze the rim, I'll be impressed, but until then....who cares. Women's basketball is awful.

Scott has got it right. They were really just glorified lay-ups.

the girl is 6 foot 3. there are guys 8 inches shorter than her throwing down two hand reverses. And i agree with scott saying it was not really a dunk. She didn't really throw the ball down, she got her hand up and threw it out, it hit the other side of the rim and went in.

There are guys... GUYS. Women are not built with the same athletic abilities as men are, and it's a solid fact.

I really hope you guys have daughters that want to play basketball some day.

Dude, if they dunk, they dunk, I will give them credit, but the media FLIPPING OUT over a college girl grazing the rim is retarded. 2 points is 2 points. Jeez.

anybody hear stacey dales-schuman on sportscenter go crazy for this and proclaim that the "talent gap in women's college basketball is so spread out now" and that "these dunks will get people to pay attention to women's basketball." It was ridiculous. these dunks (if you want to call them that) are cool and all, but they're not saving the women's game. what would save the women's game would be for the talent gap to close even more so there's no 89-36 games.

Well I think it's overhyped as well and I do not think she should have won that dunk contest just for being a girl dunking. I just don't think it should be compared to Nate Robinson or Spud Webb.

please stop with the daughters comments. everytime a discussion about women's sports comes up there is one ass who tries to make everyone look like hipocrates because we are hating on women's sports yet we may have daughters playing sports some day. the fact is though that women's basketball is boring in a lot of ways and i really do not agree when everyone says that the game has more fundamentals than the men's game. When i have a daughter i will support her and watch her play because she is my daughter, that does not mean i will not have an opinion. I would just choose not to watch when she is not playing. Besides, I am 5'7, my daughter will be lucky to break 5'5, she will not be playing basketball, so it will not even be an issue, haha.

Well it is closed minded and ignorant to see something that brings attention to the woman's game and try to tear it down and compare it to guys sports. I've never even seen women's sports discussed at all on this website until this thread either.

It is when people talk like it isn't even a sport. Some of the comments basically sound like "well I don't know why they even talk about women's sports at all" to me. That's the relevance.

Exactly. But I would like to retort anyway. I have been to one WNBA game, I got free tickets and I left within five minutes, it was absolutely horrible. However, my younger sister plays traveling basketball (7th and 8th grade) and they are in the playoffs and last week they had their first round game. It was incredibly exciting and I even found myself standing and yelling from the stands. One of the more intense sports contests I have ever been at. And I don't even like basketball. The point being that I would support my family in whatever they do, and the fact that I hate women's basketball didn't keep me from enjoying watching my sister play.

One thing that seems really odd to me is that the WNBA seems to play at a slower pace then either NCAA or High School.

It's like I watched Chamique Holdsclaw play at Tennessee and be all over the court. She'd grab a rebound and just fly down the court. I saw her play a few WNBA games and she just sat on the peremeter and occassionally cut to the basket. Our high school girls were exciting to watch (one of our players now plays for NC State) and I enjoyed the pace of the game.

My best guess is that at the higher levels the defense is getting better so it becomes more difficult to fly around the court like a mad"woman". Perhaps the women get stronger so going to the basket means harder fouls. Just a couple guesses.

i still find this somewhat impressive. the wnba is super fucking lame, dumbest idea in the history of sports. but womens college basketball CAN be entertaining.

I'd rather watch Latta from UNC run the point than any male college point guards. The girl is quick.

The girls games at my school are more exciting that the guys. At our boys Varsity games its a blow out everytime, either we lose by 30 or win by 30. the girls games are close

i just remembered that women use a smaller ball. That makes the dunk less impressive for me. As for the idea that i think it is not a sport, that is not the case. Of course it is a sport. So is lacrosse. But I do not enjoy watching that either. But I do not like the fact that the women use a smaller ball than the men. If you want to change my mind about women's basketball, you have to start by using a standard ball.

Caleb Cattivera
03/20/06, 10:16 PM
they have a smaller ball because most have smaller hands...

wessa
03/20/06, 10:24 PM
but i have smaller hands than nba players and i use the same ball as them. The fact is that it is trying to make it easier for women. But they are all capable of using a larger ball and they should. A small ball will go in the hoop easier. Imagine how many more shots are missed if they use the same ball as men.

wow. they use a smaller ball because they have smaller hands. you want them out there shooting medicine balls? I'm not overly impressed with the dunks but i'm not stretching things to degrade their sport.

Girls use the exact same size ball from middle school onto the WNBA, 28.5" compared to 29.5" used by the guys. If you're insisting that girls suddenly use a bigger ball when they jump to the NCAAs then that's ridiculous.

I mean have you ever seen 7th and 8th graders try to shoot a men's ball? they can barely get it to the rim.

pro football uses a bigger ball than they do in college. i suggest that girls use the same balls as boys. The 28.5 is used for younger boys (i think its like 12 and under). In high school boys switch to the bigger ball. Girls should do the same.

Have you seen 7th and 8th graders shoot? Obviously you haven't, they have no problem shooting a ball. You must be thinking of 1st graders.

Talib Scottie
03/21/06, 03:39 PM
Okay, I forgot to specify 7th and 8th grade girls. I played basketball from 7th grade until I graduate so I obviously would know a guy could shoot a ball.

Okay so girls use a smaller ball? Does that take away from the fact that they have worked just as hard as any guy does to make it to the next level? No. Don't disrespect their sport by comparing them to a bunch of dudes who won't play basketball until you slam 15 million dollars in front of them.

The ball is smaller and slightly lighter. One reason why is because they don't get as much lift on their shots as the men's players, they're just physically incapable. It's not like they don't jump high because they don't want to.
