Rx Bandits - Mandala
Record Label: Sargent House
Release Date: July 21, 2009

It might be easy to identify Rx Bandits as a chameleon, seeing how much change they have gone through both in terms of their music and band personnel. However, it might be more accurate to suggest that Rx Bandits are simply an entirely different breed altogether. Fine-tuning their sound more than David Bowie changed his hair style, Rx Bandits have transformed themselves into more than just an ordinary band -- they are "ear art," which is to imply that what your eyes cannot visually locate, your ears do... and they send all that delicious candy to every other sense in your body. Go ahead. Don't be afraid. Taste it, baby. Goes down oh-so smoo-hoo-ooth.

After nearly 15 years and seven albums, you can expect a massive dose of growth from this Southern California group that spent much of the earlier half of the millennium overshadowed by their Drive-Thru peers. With each release, the Bandits have developed a fuller, more progressive sound; a sound that was at first influenced by ska & metal, and later became groove-oriented, before finally settling on the entire frame of every instrument that went into creating an entire song. It isn't just about hooks and snap with the Bandits -- they want to hit you from all sides with everything they've got. Literally. RXB are creating music that is meant to be listened to.

After a four-year wait that witnessed more band members leave and even more artistically-defined side projects release material, Matthew Embree & company have made their first completely Reines-free album, the aptly-named Mandala, which not only sounds profound and more enigmatic -- but more importantly, it continues to push the band's creative boundaries to their limits, just to see how much they can test them before they break. Working with producer Chris Fudurich, whom the band worked with on Progress and The Resignation, the album was recorded live and sounds lush & completely captivating. Every member contributes their best work with a bit of swagger and lot of feeling. Motivational speaking? Who needs it when you can just put on the jaunty rhythms of Rx Bandits and feel better in less than an hour!

Mandala is an odd mix of familiarity with something completely different; the horn section has all but been abandoned in favor of a transcendent euphoria that opening cut "My Lonesome Only Friend" captures perfectly. Like a calm before the storm, the song brews up something fierce in four minutes before the waves settle, preparing for another hit. Despite the hornless sound ("Bury it Down Low," however, is classic RXB), the reggae/ska rhythms are all still present, driving every track like a locomotive ("Hearts That Hanker For Mistake") with a hint of Hammond organ floating in the background. The sonic calamity is a fascinating blend of Indian melody ("Hope is a Butterfly...") and calypso percussion (Chris Tsagakis sounds better every record), and as the album cover suggests, there is a sense of peaceful tyranny to the entire record. "Breakfast Cat" is a hurricane of bass & non-stop pulsating drumbeats that wrap around the song like a python. Not surprisingly, it sounds like the second-cousin to "Dinna-Dawg" off 2003's The Resignation.

As it all fuses together, Mandala is the Bandits' most globally-scoped record, enhanced by the unified lyrics that speak of self-confession and soul bearing over a very Mediterranean-based rhythm section that plays like a well-orchestrated jam band (check out the Latin-tinged "Mientras la Veo Sonar," and that organ/drum finale). The music is doing the talking here (and, at times, Embree's lyrics reflect that), and every piece is working together, in unison. Like the river Nile, it flows with beauty and grace, working toward a larger goal than merely what your eye-line can see. Mandala isn't meant to be skipped over; this is an album that intentionally strings itself together, twisting and turning, leading the listener on a trip that is both turbulent & composed. Hell, there is so much going on with Mandala, recommending it in your own words seems rather trivial. This is the kind of album that begs for expensive headphones in order to truly listen to all it's lovely value.

It might be difficult for longtime fans to understand what the band is going for, because in a day & age of studio-based bands, hearing something so focused & organic (not to mention talented) is a chore to get through. Mandala goes down easier with every 53 minutes it bum-rushes through, and while longtime admirers might have to get past the fact that the Bandits no longer stick to some basic formalities concerning structure, the patience is well-worth the payoff. "May this harmony create a sanctuary for escape," Embree sings. Mandala seems like a good place to hide.

Growth and progression. And really, is there any band out there that comes close to Rx Bandits? Think of music you actually have to sit down and listen to -- it's like that, but better."Mientras la Veo Sonar," "Breakfast Cat" and "Hope is a Butterfly..."

i loved their last album, which was had some fun choruses that were pretty easy to get into.
this album however is so ridiculously hard to get into, as soon as i feel it picking up and going somewhere they go somewhere else, and it gets really confusing and hard to feel.
i've listened to it about three times so far. and a few songs i like, but this is going to take some time to get into for real.

It's so relieving to know that something so real and organic can still come from an industry where "neon" and "crunkcore" reign supreme.
One thing that's amazed me with this record is how despite all it's tempo changes and sporatic nature of the song structures it still manages to keep it's "pop-sensibility" in that the melodies are memorable and after a few listens you can actually sing along; the superb musicianship adds to instead of takes from it's listenability which is rare in music this technical.

I believe 2006's ...And The Battle Begun was the first non-Drive Thru album, as it was released on Embree's Mash Down Babylon Records.

Eh this album still needs to grow on me. I listened to it last night for the second time, and I definitely liked it a lot more than the first time I listened to it. But I think the biggest weakness of it is no horns section.

Was never a fan of ska at all, but RX Bandits had so much talented instrumentation; it changed my perspective a bit. I still have a soft spot for "Decrescendo" off of Resignation. I like how you pointed out that they were overshadowed by their Drive-Thru peers. Back in the day, I was a huge fan of the whole Drive-Thru catalog around 2002 with NFG, Senses Fail, HIPV, The Movielife, The Early November, The Starting Line, and so on...RXB was easily over-looked. I'll definitely be checking this out.

Great review by the way.

I had the same experience hearing this album. I enjoy Rx Bandits but need to give this album some more listens than others. It's strange to see the album rated so high because I didn't have an initially positive response.

Excellent review and amazing album.

About the comment on any other band making music that your supposed to listen to nowadays I have to disagree. But in this ska-punk/hardcore scene RX is without a doubt the most creative and innovative band out there.

From what I understand, the album was initially going to be released through DTR, but got pushed back while RxB got themselves disentangled from the label. Excellent review, I love this album start to finish.

Killer review on this album. I was so excited when I got it and I was not let down one bit. Amazing how they've changed since the early days and keep me wanting more.

everything they do is musical genius. as a loyal fan for many years, their growth feels natural, and i feel like i grow with them. bandits are the most amazing live band, and youre right...music that you enjoy just sitting and listening to. even though mandala is different than and the battle begun and the resignation, there are still songs on mandala that can be seen as sequels to previous songs. for example, white lies could be a follow up to apparition. hope is a butterfly could be 1980 part 2. of course, i do miss the horns, especially live when they play songs like in her drawer, but its something you get over quickly. overall, rxb is the best band out there.

excellent album in terms of progression but ...and the battle begun will forever remain my fav. I was once weary of the progression from the resignation to ATBB in the loss of Borth and his harmonious sax but Sheets made up for the void. With Mandala it's obvious this brass entity is almost entirely lost and that is something that made RX unique to their sound. They were able to evolve from the 3rd wave and carry on with so much nostalgia while continuing to become what they are today. I never felt that the brass sections were catered to but from what I've recently read, this was something that was holding them back. It's an unfortunate loss but "the only thing left thats constant is change" and Bury It Down Low will be my vague reminder as to why RX is still my favorite band. One Love!

Honestly, I love every record RXB has done, but I think they get better every time. If you thought the last album was something, this one is a bit of that mixed with some bits of The Resignation. I highly suggest you give it a few spins and see how it sticks with ya.

Oh HELL yeah 94%.

This is much deserved. RXB never disappoint, and Mandala may be their absolute BEST album to date. It's hard to overcome The Resignation, but this album is very close. It is good to see a review that doesn't overlook the pristine value of the beautiful music that this album has to offer, and written very well by a reviewer who knows what they're talking about.

Well done!

Great review.

Agree about this album needing to be listened to, it sounds great on vinyl. The incredibly lush soundscapes beg for headphones. What's unique about it is that it all stems from unedited live tracking straight to tape. It sounds raw and honest, yet layered and tight. The whole band is ridiculous, especially love C-gak's drumming and Matt's refreshingly un-pitch corrected vocals.

Following this band for as long as I have, it's easy to see where their spacey latin tinged "groove-tech" came from, this album makes sense to me. On the other hand... I could see it being a bit strange and overwhelming coming out of nowhere. It's different, but definitely worth getting into.

They're closer these days to a more accessible Mars Volta than Reel Big Fish. It's a shame that their roots seem to carry a negative stigma. It's, almost literally, a different band. Glad to see more and more people getting past this, reviews like this help. A well deserved score.
