View Full Version : 13 Days Short I Guess

Vinnie from Less Than Jake (http://www.absolutepunk.net/lessthanjake) has updated his online journal (http://www.pickyourpoisons.com/) in regards to a bunch of things, including album critics. Possibly referring to my recent review (http://www.absolutepunk.net/reviews) of the new album - but I don't know.
Let me tell you a few things that are facts, I’ve never liked keg parties, I like the smell of pot smoke but don’t smoke it, and I hate thinking that there isn’t a “perfect” junkfood. - however in past I’ve gone to keg parties, I’ve smoked pot, and I could’ve sworn I ate the perfect junk food usually after do the aformentioned, I tell you this because even the things that I love, hate, and think can for a very brief moment change. I can be a very eloquent hypocrite, I enjoy a good 180 degree turn every now and then to shake up my average day to day insanity. There’s way too many people lately, ringing my proverbial doorbell telling me what they like and don’t like about our new record, people use words like “surprise” “a turn around” “a new sound” they also use words like “average” or “awesome”. Here’s a fact- I hate rock critics, I hate how they use obscure references, write from strictly the side that best suits there mood, point of view or opinion. These days : Friends are critics, family are critics, strangers are critics, casually slicing and dicing up songs in light hearted conversations or quietly typing at a keyboard staring at a computer screen writing out of passion or politics or payment then sending it out to places where its taken as words of god or the best joke. Here’s the snap in the string - right now I’m enjoying hearing what people are saying at this moment, this is my 180 degree turn, this is me taking the sniper scope off every asshole with a half minded opinion and a advanced copy of our new record. I like to hear the bad and good of what the end result of 18 days in north hollywood is… The difference in what I did and what most kids and critics are doing is that for 18 days I gave it every ounce of my passion, squeezed and screamed, for 18 days I made something that’s will stand on its own as I move on and will stand after people move on from it.. what most of friends/family/critics alike are doing took at most 15 minutes to say or type. I’d love someone to listen to the record for 18 days before forming any thought, one day for each day we recorded. Ah that’s perfect world type shit right there..

maybe he needs to realize you cant please everyone, and for a band in his position (being around forever) theres always going to be someone who wants to criticize no matter what kind of album they put out. Then again he should know this by now. who cares, move on.

eh, bands shouldnt care what reviewers say about their records. As long as they are happy with it that should be all that matters. As much as they love selling records anbd gaining fans, bands make music because they love to do it so they should stick with that attitude...

1) I've never posted about Vinnie's journal - EVER - besides today.
2) Sorry for forgetting the 's'
3) Weird thing to "love"
4) Don't call me Tate, that shit is annoying.

I was always into Less than Jake, but Hello Rockview really owned my middleschool/highschool years. No matter how many times I listened to it, it never got old. That's a lot to say, seeing as I was never really into ska music (outside of some local NJ greats. One Cool Guy, President Lemon, early Catch 22/Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution/Streetlight) Hopefully this cd will also be something new, but still make me think of being in the car with friends, or at their shows, singing along as loud as we can.
Hopefully one day I can work with these dudes, and give back something to a band that I grew up on.

Mr Master of the Universe, not to be totally off topic here, but do u have any clue where i can get a cartel guitar book? for chroma?

the artist shouldn't give a fuck what reviewers say. Are you doing it for them? You shouldn't be. You're doing what you wanna do, so fuck everything else.
I liked the advance I got for the most part. But I do agree that Overrated is annoying.

No way man. When their next album is a hit on epic, then you'd probably get one. look for a tab site.

I don't see a "comparison" between smoking pot and critics anywhere in that paragraph. What I do see is Vinny using "smoking pot" to symbolize his hypocrisy and acceptance of critics for the time being.
Vinny and Less Than Jake are incredible.

ok i re-read it and get it now. regardless, the entry comes off as whiny, especially for someone who has been a professional musician and in a flagship band for a dying scene. you would think as not only someone in a band, but someone who runs a record label would know that this is how the music industry works and how fickle the people in it are. not everyone is going to like everything you do, which is why you just do it and if people dont like it, keep moving on and maybe someday they will. its not like if this album tanks no one is going to give them another shot.

Amen brotha. I'm sorry, but Losing Streak and Hello Rockview and yes, even Anthem mean far too much to me for me to turn my back on them. Honestly, Borders & Boundaries is my least favorite but it has the best version of Look What Happened, so it still owns.

Yeah, but I saw this update as the exact opposite of that. Vinny directly says that he is going to be open minded when it comes to critics this time around, because he usually isn't.
...I just don't understand how him stating his newfound acceptance of critics can be interpreted in a whiny or negatve way.

I don't get it tho... They've been in the business for this long. They've released so many albums-- they're veterans at this. Why are things getting so personal all of a sudden? Eh, I still love them.
who cares whether you like the band or not, why does everyone post their seemingly worthless opinions? (i.e. "i've never been into them", "i'm excited...") How does this contribute to anything conveyed in the original post. It is not constructive and a waste of space. Further more your opinions are rediculous and mean nothing if there are no credentials to back them up. "oh, this dude on absolute hates the new LTJ I better not find out for myself"

It's a metaphor, which is a comparison, you putz.
hmm i hope this album isnt crap but i have serious doubts due to all the negativity. i wos previously lookin forward to this release
