marbury1414

It's supposed to be a play on the phrase in a sense. Deus ex machina (god in the machine) refers to old plays where the conflict would be resolved by a god character coming down and solving everyone's problems. Donnie realizes that everything is happening because of him and he is literally the "god in the machine." Only by his actions can he solve the problems of everyone else.

/thread

(This is also the theme of the entire movie)

watch the extended cut version. normaly these are a ploy to make you buy 15 more mintes of crap fotage you shouldve gotten in te origional but this one had some nice extrasI loved the extended cut but i wouldnt advise making that your first watch as i think it takes away from the mystery by kinda bringing up pages from the book...the original version is the best still, but some of the deleted scenes are worth the price of the DVD.

JunkBondTrader
03/19/06, 07:55 PM
yea its basically just a force of god is acting to pull the plot together to make everything come out right. Donnie knows this. he has known it all along. He already knows what he has to do. Kind of like the Manipulated Living, its all apart of this interworking of god or this higher power. The best example of the manipulated living, in my opinion, is when Drew Barrymore asks Gretchen to sit next to the cutest boy......no teacher would ask anyone girl to do that. She is manipulated by this god machine so Gretchen will meet Donnie because it is essential.

Put this on.....only 14.99 at hot topic! <3
Hot Topic is an alternative lifestyle store, it's not just scene, it's goth, it's Metallica bongs, it's redneck, it's whatever. It's a store that appeals to niche markets, just like Donnie Darko has become a cult classic in niche markets. Take a marketing class, Slade.

SLADE775
03/20/06, 03:52 PM
I don't give a shit where it is, you know what other movie got shit-panned by critics (far worse than Donnie Darko) when it hit theaters? The Shawshank Redemption - now widely regarded as one of the greatest movies ever created. Don't call me foolish. It's days like these when you create threads and pick fights for your sole entertainment when I wonder why Jason ever lifted your ban.

Forst of all:

I'm simply stating an opinion, is there really somehting wrong with that?

Secondly:

I never called you foolish.

Thirdly:

If you can't see how it's scene.....you're blind

and thus, by very definition of the word, this movie cannot be "scene"

Slade, final statement. You choosing to pick fights in the forums and make broad generalizations of games, movies, TV shows, and the people that watch them has gone one step too far. You are welcome to carry on debates in a respectable manner with people, but grouping everybody together as one is unacceptable and is creating a destructive enviornment on these forums. This is a strong stance but it's one that many members feel and I think others would agree that they're flat out sick of it. Any more threads that I personally see with you talking shit on other users for their opinions, purposely calling groups of people "blind" or "idiots" for thinking one way another, those threads will be closed. I certainly hope you get the hint after a while, because it's gone on long enough. No more new threads about "Brand New sucks" or "Arrested Development is not funny" or "The xbox 360 sucks my balls" or "You're an idiot if you don't like Dragon Quest 8" or any sort of obvious dissenting opinion for the sole purpose of pissing off people and giving you giggles. You might actually be suprised by the review. It's not bad in the least, in fact it has a lot of great things about it. At your age, I'm not suprised why you wouldn't find it funny. It requires you to watch it in order, understand the characters, and appreciate subtle humor as well as situational humor. If all you like is cheap laughs, you're not going to like it. I mean no offense by the age, it's just that most people who "get" the show are at least 18 or 19.

Not exactly, but if you have no frame of reference for certain aspects (this applies to more than just movies), your opinions can be way off the mark.

Just say, for example, you saw a movie and were extremely impressed by the camera techniques because it had a trombone shot and a ferris wheel shot, and a few other bells and whistles. As a result, in your review, you give this movie an A+ for cinematography. That rating would be completely ridiculous if you had seen a few old movies and knew that these styles of shots have been around for nearly 50 years. You know?

Whatever.

^^ donnie darko isnt even confusing. thats the one thing that bothers me. is that if you sit down and watch it....there really isnt anything to confuse when it comes to the plot. The thing that is up for interpretation are all the things in the background like.....the comparisons between donnie and jesus. and holden caufield. and all of the little stuff. and why he has to do what he does. and if the movie is abou possibility, love, alienation, or whatever. it terms of the plot and all of the time travel its really not hard to follow at all. all of the stuff involving the manipulated living and the portals and all of that is extremely easy to understand, especially when you watch the extended directors cut version.

well actaully it is a bit confusing...the end can be complicated since the movie doesnt really explain a lot of things, like out of the 5 people ive watched donnie darko with, only one really understood what had just happened afterwards. it took me about 3 watches to really comprehend. as for the jesus stuff etc., i really think thats just people stretching what happens a little..

i really dont think the jesus stuff is stretching at all.

there are many references to it throughout the movie. in the extended version if you listen to his poem its almost blatantly obvious that richard kelly wants you to make the connection. Hes dying for th people he loves.....some of the shots are christlike. Its almost tooo obvious. But thats just me.

well maybe your right, i havent really looked in to it too much. but now that i think about it, he does call that one guy the anti-christ, which (assuming they are mortal enemies) would make him jesus. i cant think of any christlike scenes though, then again, ive never read the bible.

People either give this movie way too much, or not nearly enough credit. Can't people just say that it's good, without creaming their fucking pants? It's not THAT good, but definately entertaining. I'm sure this thread was mostly 9 pages of stupidity.

Strangely enough I quite liked Bubble Boy. There's something endearing about it's heart, sure it's somewhat dumb at points, but it's ridiculously amusing. Also, October Sky is a wonderful movie. Day After Tomorrow sucks, but the rest are fine, even if The Good Girl is kinda meh and overtly dramatic.

October Sky is one of my all time favorites. fluke you can appreciate Mark Isham's beautiful score in that movie. i actually loved the good girl, quirky drama. i thought it was a gem.

I like it, but I think it gets way overrated. People need to approach it as a cool psychological thriller and stop pretending like it's some incredibly deep or philosophical movie... because it ain't.

That being said, yes, great movie. And Jake Gylenhaal is hot.

and actually, if you get the movie, it is surprsingly deeper than most people give it credit for. the way the movie is set up gives it many different ways to interpret it. ive heard at least four different ideas and they all make sense.

....that is the dumbest thing i have ever heard.

i love when people make comments like this. if anything, the directors cut is the dumbed down version for the people who had no idea what was going on in the original cut. the directors cut really makes it not as much fun going on becasue it takes away alot the interpretation that went along witht he original. you have no idea what you are talking about.....what you just said is a total fucking scenester comment....it has no credibility, its just said to be completely over the top and different.

what the fuck

the only problem with the original is that it didn't show roberta sparrow's book. which ties together the whole plot.

without it, there's no way to understand the tangent universe and shit.

The "tangent universe and shit" is not the only interpretation that the movie should be allowed. That's just the directors'.

I like the little pages, but they fit the plot of the movie too flawlessly. It makes it seem like that is exactly what is going on and leaves no room for other interpretations. But who really cares, they're a bitch to read anyway. All the scenes that were added are superb, and the rescoring is excellent.
