I'm thinking of doing this, this the most comprehensive and cheapest one out there right now: http://www.pathway.com/index
I want to do the one that includes ancestral testing, because pretty much no one on my dad's side of the family knows where they came from. And I'm also a hypochondriac so of course knowing what diseases I'm predisposed to interests me. Has anyone done anything like this or knows someone who has?
sounds very sci-fi. i like it

i think about the last episode of scrubs... once you learn something, there is no unlearning it. think about that before you dive into a genetic test.

My linguistics prof talked about this a lot and did a little demo for us in class of the mapping stuff. Seemed legit.

Eh for the most part I know what I need to about my heritage and heredity health issues I might have in the future. But I think if I were going to have kids I would want it done to see if they are predisposed to a genetic disease or defect I may not know about.

if no one in your family have any genetically based diseases then why bother?

I'm thinking about getting cryogenically frozen like in Sleeper.

It's really not crazy at all. I mean, why not know if I'm predisposed to something? Maybe I could take precautions before it happened. And knowing where I came from, and who my ancestors were has just always interested me.

I never said they didn't. This is a list of everything they check for, and there's a lot of things on there that people in my family have: http://www.pathway.com/more_info/full_list_of_conditions There's been like 5 women on my dad's side of the family that have developed breast cancer and had to have mastectomies, and that really freaks me out.

Are you serious? Cause I'm slightly serious about that but everyone thinks I'm insane for even suggesting it.

I was just going to say this. I don't think I would want to know if I had a terrible disease, because then that would be all I would ever be able to think about.

I haven't done this but would really like to. I have a really interesting family history (Russian Jews that made it out of Europe at Hitler's peak) and would suggest you go for it. Let me know how it works out for you, because I may do the same :-)

It was in reference to you being a hypochondriac. But I was mostly kidding about that. I say go for it, why not. Especially if you have the money to do so.

This is why I would probably never do something like this. I'd end up finding out something horrible and fixating on it, despite the fact the anxiety would likely kill me before any disease. There are enough things I've learned and wished I hadn't, I don't need something else.
You're not the only one, but my main reason for wanting to have my DNA tested was to figure out more about where my ancestors came from exactly.

I just need $100 for it.

Who gives a shit? Are any living relatives of Hitler wacked out because of it? No.
There's not a thing to feel guilty about in such an unfortunate situation.

I was referring to the genetic testing that predicted what diseases you could be prone to, not the one that found out who your ancestors are. Finding out I'm prone to some incurable condition would screw me up for the rest of my life. I think the ancestor one would actually be pretty neat. My mom's maiden name is the surname of a bunch of Portuguese explorers, so I've always wondered if I could have been related to one of them.

we could be related. i'm russian, romanian and polish (and jewish, even though me and my immediate family are all atheists).
the test sounds interesting. go for it!
